We're a team that hasn't beaten any of the "traditional" top 6 teams except Tottenham, the weakest of the 6, we also haven't beaten any of the current top 6 teams except Bournemouth, the weakest of the 6, yet somehow people think we're in a title race just because we're the closest to Liverpool with a squad lacking experience in this kind of situation, we're just trying to secure top 4 this season. Arsenal are underperforming when they're 8 points off their pace last season, which would be 4 points above us right now, City are massively underperforming so would likely be 6+ points above us and we'd be 4th if those teams we're doing as we've come to expect off them, if we were 4th and 6+ points off top spot nobody would be saying we're involved in the race, they'd be saying we'll be dropping off in the new year. Other teams failings in a title race doesn't make Chelsea in a title race just to have something interesting to talk about rather than expecting Liverpool to walk the league going forward.

It's very simple really, if Brentford were 2nd in the league right now, would they be considered title contenders? Absolutely not. It's the same thing for Chelsea. Both teams were not considered contenders before the season started, and while 16 games is enough to start dreaming, it is not enough to warrant a reassessment of our title credentials. Now there is most certainly a number, where after said number of games you would have no choice but to acknowledge a team's title credentials, however that number is not 16. Similarly, are City still contenders? Absolutely. They were strong favourites before the season started, and 16 games is not enough to count them out. Again, there is a number, where after said number of games, if City were still some distance behind 1st, then you would reassess and no longer consider them contenders. Again, that number is not 16. In my personal opinion, if after 2/3 of a season, or about 24-25 games, a team is still only a few points off 1st, then I would say at this stage you would have to acknowledge that team as title challengers, whether that team is Chelsea or Brentford.
