This song brings back painful yet beautiful memories, The first time I heard this song my wife and I were in Boston, at the Hope Lodge where we lived for 6 months. My wife was a patient at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. We were there for a Clinical Trial study for her CLL Leukemia. We were living in Atlanta, but originally I am from Oklahoma. I heard this song from Doug, and fell in love with it. What a beautiful song, and it will always be in my mind and heart Doug. My wife passed away this past October, and will always have fond but painful memories her and this song. RIP Doug. Thank you for your music. RIP my love. Thank you for being my wife.

Doug is what music is all about. Heart & Soul with Pashion involved. Most gifted musicians are self taught, and play by ear. Music on a page remains the same, no matter who plays it, but every true musician by ear, has their own style which sets them apart from the rest. Beautiful work Sir.

True talent absorbed from the nature that surrounds him!! Windmills turning if ya listen they all sing a different time! Wind in south Texas is so different from the panhandle! Like ya know it is your dog barking or the neighbors! If we just listen in tune with our surroundings!! A much better place!! Of understanding!!

“It seemed that no matter where I was, I would come back to Lubbock,” he says. “That flat, endless land out there did something to me, it opened my head up. [Flatlander] Butch Hancock said you could see 50 miles in every direction, and if you stood on a tuna fish can you could see 100 miles.” That's just a quote I read from Ely. Check out his album, The Lubbock Tapes. Also Lubbock on Everything is an amazing album by Terry Allen.

Doug Smith - musician, composer and recording artist - was found dead at his Lubbock home Monday morning (June 6, 2016). The popular pianist, who was raised in Kermit and made his home near Petersburg for many years, was 52. He recorded 10 albums and, in 2003, was the subject of a PBS documentary titled "There It Is." A one-vehicle accident on a lonely highway early on July 25, 2007, left Smith in "constant, searing nerve pain," according to music producer and friend Alan Crossland. Smith was diagnosed as a quadriplegic, and confined to a wheelchair. Dylan Smith, one of Doug's two sons, said Monday that his father was found dead by nurse Debbie Fry when she reported to his home that morning. "All we know," said Dylan, "is he died sometime between 10 p.m. last night and 9 a.m. this morning."

Tell him to stand on that "tuna can". Perhaps he would see his life as hopeless.

He moved a lot of people with his art and here we are still talking about him and his legacy. You’re just some bitter person leaving comments with nothing to show for. Very sad.
