Doug Smith - A West Texas Treasure

Doug Smith is a musical treasure of West Texas. His piano recordings, musical contributions, and concert performances, have made him one of the most inspirational contemporary instrumental artist on the Southwestern Plains. If you haven't heard Doug Smith play the piano, you haven't heard the piano!
This video was produced for Virtual Rehab, a biofeedback technology that can allow patients with motor deficits the ability to control devices that they might not have been able to before. In Doug's case, this meant regaining control over the sustain pedal of his piano as he returns to playing after a spinal injury in 2008. This presentation tells some of Doug's background, his story, and where he is currently in his recovery.

I had the pleasure of meeting DOUG 20 some years ago when I was in a hotel having dinner and heard an incredible piece of music being played in the lobby piano. The piece turned out to be PASSION and the pianist was Doug --- It is my all time favorite piece of music I play it over and over. He had not been "discovered" yet but he gave me a cassette with his music. Eventually the cassette wore out and finally I found his CD. I recently found out about his accident and was so sad. Then I found this video and was thrilled to see that he continues to enrich the world with his music. Doug, if you ever read these comments, I wish you the best and thank you for your beautiful music.

Doug, you still have it buddy. You always had it even when we used to go to the girls dorms at Tech and we would all gather round you and the show would begin. You would play so hard you even broke some strings on the grand pianos. I knew then that you were destined to be a star someday. Boy was I right, but I never thought it would be like this.
