"...I think 'IT' (his smile) pains the average passerby." ? It sounds like maybe he has or is singing about, someone who has a mouth full of messed up teeth. But, given the rest of the lyric content, I think he's probably the only one that knows for sure what he's talkin about. Sometimes even THEY don't know what they're talkin about. The author of Wildfire, the song about the horse, confesses years later, "I still don't know what this song is about." 'Course, artists can be excentric, and may not be able to be an artist w/o it.
