Jesus told Peter (and the Church) "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”" (Matthew 16:19) Part of being the Universal Church is knowing where to bind and where to loosen. The Catholic Church gives us binding doctrines we must follow, and it is loose when it comes to personal devotions, the ways in which we express our devotion to Christ and the Church. Protestantism felt more binding because, while there is no Catechism defining what one must believe, there was an expectation that one fit into the unwritten culture and expectations of the particular congregation you were a member of. It was possible to be ostracized or blackballed in a way that seldom happens in the Catholic Church.

I for one am thankful to have a catechism that clearly spells out our beliefs incorporating Scripture, Sacred Tradition, under the teachings Magisterium of the church.

The Holy Spirit picks the Pope. He also replaces them when he is ready. It in't our place to question the Pope.

Good point. We have to step back and recognize that Christ through His Spirit are at work in imperfect people to accomplish His purpose.

I agree what you are saying. I feel I have to protect my children and grandchildren from novel and contradictory leadership coming from Rome now. These are difficult times.

Thank you for your videos, your thoughts and experiences. I understand we need to learn to be compassionate and not judgemental. I also had a schismatic mindset (maybe I still have it partially). On the other hand, I can't obey, even the pope, when he teaches something what is contradictory to Tradition. That's not one thing. How can then I rely on what is he teaching or talking?
@CONTEMPLATINGCATHOLICISM-CR21 күн бұрын
It is important to speak truth in love. Discernment is important and is an individual as well as a function of church leadership. If my personal judgment contradicts what the church declares as authoritative teachings I must first question my individual judgment to discern any personal misunderstanding and seek clarification.

Protestant didn’t leave the Catholic faith the left Jesus. The Bible is very clear that Jesus and the Catholic Church are one.

#1. An exercise in appeal to motivation, association, and hasty generalization. Irrationality gets us nowhere and persuades no intelligent mind. #2. Those with a "schismatic" attitude tend to rely on other theological experts, in good faith, and previous papal magisteriums of the past and they see inconsistencies. It is not a narcissistic desire to find fault with the pope for no good reason. Furthermore, it is the duty of the Pope, as shepherd of the Church, to not make it more likely or easier for Christians to fall into schism due to his own incompetence or messaging. #3. The difference between Protestants and Catholics to Catholics and Orthodox/Schismatics is night and day. It's apples and oranges fallacy. The motivations and sources for objections are entirely different. #4. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees many times for being heretical (adding human traditions to the faith) and being schismatic (denying Jesus as the Son of God). OP is engaging in appeal to hypocrisy fallacy. #5. We also have many verses in Scripture informing the laity to not associate, greet, or have in their own house a heretic. That requires the laity to "know" a heretic when they see it and act according, individually. Unfortunately, the theological issues involved is the actual discussion, not trying to psycho-analyze one's opponents, generalizing them, without interviewing them, and without the credentials to analyze them as individuals or groups.

The essence of a schismatic mindset that I have in mind is not to throw out needed discernment but an appeal to consider one’s own faults and sometimes faulty understanding before practicing it. Theological and spiritual growth is a lifelong and endeavor that must be tempered with humility and a measure of docility. Peace

@@CONTEMPLATINGCATHOLICISM-CR And do you believe you won't be held personally responsible to God for holding an error or heretical belief simply because it came from the Catholic Magisterium that happened to exist during your lifetime? Is it appropriate for me to psycho-analyze you as an over-compensating ex-Protestant who seizes upon the certainty of RCC authority after how many years of chaos? To what end shall beliefs be discounted due to personality traits, extrovert vs introvert, authoritarian vs libertarian, aggressive vs harmonious, social butterfly vs perfectionist. Where does it get us? Only the truth is persuasive, not a psycho-analysis of why we think the way we do.

It’s the year 2024. Separation of Church and State has been adopted by most European countries. It is market based Christian now where individual choice is where power lies. Why are we still using irrelevant words like schism or heresy?
@CONTEMPLATINGCATHOLICISM-CR20 күн бұрын
Because there are still schisms and heresies. The worst is the postmodern thinking that each individual can make up their own dogmas and morals to the demise of the western world. Without a meta narrative society turns on itself to its own destruction.
@jaypritchard712220 күн бұрын
@ of course there is. Each individual is a schism from another. Faith is a free choice. KZbin is a perfect example. One can watch videos of many different people with views and the individual decides what to grab of each and from there they have their personal sovereign faith.
@CONTEMPLATINGCATHOLICISM-CR20 күн бұрын
@ That is not the essence of the Catholic faith reflected in our common creeds, leadership and dogma. As you say each person is free to pick and choose as they see fit but this has never been the vision of Christ for His church. Everyone can choose to be a pope and church of one but ecclesia has always been and will be communal.

@@CONTEMPLATINGCATHOLICISM-CR if Jesus is God he can setup his kingdom here whenever he wishes. If he is God then he most certainly isn’t threatened by human freedom. And if he is God he is in full control. Man however is limited in his power to influence others. Man cannot trust other men with doctrines. So it’s best to keep faith on an individual basis.

Great video and I really appreciate you coming back to the Catholic church brother may God bless you. However Catholics who love and know their faith will find a lot of contradicting statements and actions that are made by pope Francis. So many that I prefer not to cite them here. We should pray for him because most of his statements contradict the CCC and encourage people to live a sinful life or may even lead others to abandon the faith.
@joyb806221 күн бұрын
We know that gates of hell will not prevail and as the CCC nicely put it in its paragraph 677 " The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom only through this final Passover, when she will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection." These are prophetic words that announce what awaits us and maybe that time is now. Bless you

We certainly need to pray for the unity and purity of the church. The Lord has been with His church for 2000 years will present to Himself a church without spot or wrinkle.
