By: Alistair Begg || Preached November 14, 1999 - (Luke 8:1) As crowds gathered to hear Jesus teach, some thought He was the Messiah, while others were simply curious. Jesus told the Parable of the Sower to distinguish the genuine seeker from the superficial listener. Like those in the crowd, many people today become disenchanted when Jesus’ message doesn’t match their own objectives. Alistair Begg warns that those who seek Jesus only to have their own desires fulfilled will turn away disappointed.

This is the best sermon I have heard about the sower and the seed. Thank you for this. I am watching all your sermons on Luke and studying the book of Luke. I appreciate you.

Thank you for your teaching the truth of God’s word. Jesus is salvation and the only way that I may be saved. Jesus saves even me.

Boldness with the Word! We don’t need more preachers that tickle the ear. Keep preaching the truth Brother. The Gospel is nor a lullaby to put us to sleep but hard truth to wake us up.

Yes, I am a person with a bag of seeds and scatter them around as many chances as I have. It’s up to the Holy Spirit who stirs the hearts of people and up to the hearts of the persons who respond to the Word of God.

Listen to this dreary inscription on a gravestone in Britain near Windsor Castle: Pause, my friend, as you walk by; As you are now, so once was I As I am now, so you will be. Prepare, my friend, to follow me! A visitor was overheard adding these lines: To follow you is not my intent, Until I know which way you went![16] (From: Warren Wiersbe, Be Ready (Wheaton, Illinois: SP Publications, Inc., 1979) p. 93)

I love alistair begg and his sermons. What a faithful man of God. Though not every part of this sermon was good. Alistair obviously hadn't done his homework on the sacraments. For one, on the centre of any altar is the word of God. A bible open. Second the Lord's supper sits on the altar. What else is the Lord's supper but bread and wine that is given with the word of God. '"Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: Take; eat; this is my body which is given for you.... Take and drink this is my blood which is shed for you FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.' It's all about the word of God. From beginning to end. The altar and pulpit are both valuable. When we put the pulpit in the middle we risk making the man bigger then Christ who comes to us through the word and the supper. Anyway, I appreciate the rest of the sermon.

I thought he was quite rude to the audience in places and to others he spoke about. I agreed with him on the points he was making and listened until the end. I know I'm not a 4 but would like to think I'm a 3.

I'm going to point this one thing out for those of you who I'm not naming yet but whom i know very well who you are... when you don't walk in biblical truth (wisdom) you can't understand what people who are fighting the good fight of faith and girding up the lions of their mind can very clearly see...now some of you are religious with no relationship with God whatsoever and you can't see it either... insight in everything that pertains to life is given to those who are walking by faith (not the worldly kind of faith where you're just believing for something without any evidence.. walking by faith means you are doing everything you know the Spirit & the Word has taught). It will never help you to believe Hage's gospel or Holden's gospel because they are unwise and teaching you to embrace the flesh too. They have no part in life. Friendship with the world is enmity with God & they never cease to try to make my life miserable & your's too because they're teaching you to listen to your flesh and ignore the Word & the Spirit. They don't know God. If they did they wouldn't be teaching it the way they do. Human philosophy will lead to eternal perdition. Walking by faith leads to more & more insight & life everlasting. *I know that one is lying. I also know who is believing it because they are not walking in the faith. ** Oh they know. They've been giving me problems for years & years & years. So I'm done worrying about whether people think I'm following Scripture in calling someone out. I've learned unless i agree that once saved do anything you want is true they'll be there to harass. What i don't understand is the psychology of somehow a fleshly gospel is going to spur on believers to love because in fact it spurs them on to more & more ungodliness. There's no security in lawlessness. There's only security in walking in faith.

Alistair was harsh while talking about other churches and denominations. The effect of that would push some listeners away. I would hope he has tempered his views with maturity.

Since this is your comment, you have proven that you have completely missed the point of this parable. Of course this is going to be harsh and push other people away. Do you understand that in this parable Jesus pronounced judgment on people? That’s why He told us that he was concealing the truth from those who did not believe. Then Jesus goes on to talk about the four soils which stands for 4 types of hearts. 3 of the four hearts are bad. But Jesus tells us that the problem isn’t the seed. The problem is the human heart. Therefore, we shouldn’t worry about whether people are pushed away when we preach the Gospel. Some seed will in fact fall on heart hearts, some will be received with joy until all the reasons they came to Jesus were never materialized. Some people will want the seed, want eternal life, want to be a part of the Kingdom, but they also want to be a part of the world too. There is duplicity in their lives. We don’t alter to dumb down the message of the Gospel. We preach the unadulterated Gospel and it’s up to God to plow human hearts so that when the word is heard it produces fruit. I hope you don’t miss this point any more. We don’t care about pushing people away. If we are preaching the Truth it doesn’t matter who is driven away. The Gospel will offend.

Read all of John 6 and understand. Jesus fed a great multitude of people, and many deciple were there and Jesus knew their hearts. When he told he is the bread of heaven and he as to go to the cross they got offended, many of his decipled walked away from Him and he ask the 12 deciple if will walk away too. And Peter said where can we go. You are the bread of life. Many Christians read the Bible and don't understand any thing like the Pharisees

It is loving to call false churches and false denominations (of which there are many) to correction and repentance. It would be unloving to leave them in their sin. Jesus would have offended most denominations today because most are hogwash or cults.
