THE PARKINSON’S PANDEMIC AND WHAT WE NEED TO DO ABOUT IT
Parkinson’s disease is the world’s fastest growing neurological condition. This rapid growth is explained only in part by the ageing of our population, and cannot be attributed to better diagnostic skills or an improvement in ancillary testing methods. Genetics offer only limited explanation for the occurrence of Parkinson’s disease worldwide. In my presentation, Prof Bloem discusses how the presence of environmental factors play an important role in causing Parkinson’s disease. This includes toxic chemicals such as pesticides or trichloroethylene, other factors such as repeated head trauma, but also protective factors such as exercise or a healthy diet. A better insight into the factors that contribute to the rise of Parkinson’s, and also into factors that might help to prevent this pandemic from taking shape, offers the basis for creating a menu of interventions and strategies that can help to turn the tide so that we can ultimately work towards prevention of Parkinson’s disease.

I'm originally from Zambia. After completing my agricultural training in neighbouring Zimbabwe in the early 90's I went back to Zambia and was horrified at the local farmers laid back attitude to handling all agro-chemicals. The farming district of M'kushi was known as "Happy Valley" because of the high incidence of widows on the farms in their late 30's & early 40's whose husbands had succumbed to various diseases, mainly cancer. Guess what? These widows all started to get actively involved in the day to day operations on these farms, ( some with the aid of younger farm managers, Happy Valley remember) and also started to develop various types of cancer in their late 50's & early 60's. Now I realise that correlation is not necessarily causation, but lighting doesn't often strike in the same place with such monotonous regularity. Go figure...

I work in antennas, and I have worked with two antenna technicians that came down with Parkinson's. The only thing I can think of that they had in common was that they both had to do a lot of soldering, and when you solder there is flux and gases that are released from the molten metals. Also they sometimes use solvents, and possibly TCE in the past. I think it was outlawed some time in the '90's.

Yes, TCE was used as a surgical anesthetic & inhaled analgesic. The FDA banned its use for this in the US in 1977. At the same time, banned its use in food products(!). Until then it was used to extract vegetable oils & spices, and decaffeinate coffee beans. Which doesn't mean its use stopped immediately everywhere. I was able to purchase a bottle of it as a spot cleaner in the 1980s not knowing its dangers. And it continues to show up in industrial cleaning wipes, adhesives, a wide range of other products; it's still used in degreasers, so can show up in trace amounts in detergents. Of course no one worried too much about dry cleaners: that service has long been provided overwhelmingly by uneducated immigrants, who are probably a different color anyhow. Yes, I'm a little outraged. Think I was too sarcastic? Spare a moment to think about agricultural workers & electricians, both of whom suffer elevated rates of Parkinson's due to chemical exposure. Chemical companies might eventually start to worry about electricians: they have a union. But no one worries, it seems, about agricultural workers. We'll ban use of pesticides or fertilizers due to consumer concerns long before they worry about harming workers who don't even get minimum wage. If the government cares enough about these people to legislate that you needn't even pay them minimum wage, you know they don't give a damn about their long-term health. Think before you buy real estate My brother-in-law (environmental assessments & remediation engineer) warned me at about the same time to avoid buying a house within 100 ft. of any present or former dry cleaners (or gas station - both inevitably leak): TCE (& gasoline) migrate through the ground & the concrete of your basement foundations. TCE was mostly replaced in 1977 in dry cleaning with Perchloroethylene (PERC) in the United States - arguably not a great deal less toxic. Then PERC was banned Jan. 1, 2023, but again, that change probably took time to show up in the market. I'm sure the stuff we use for "dry" cleaning now is safe, but maybe don't sniff your freshly-cleaned clothes for a while. My dry cleaner suggests maybe hang your clothes in the garage for a day after you pick them up - or use their "organic" wet-cleaning process instead. How the Game is played Industry's approach to seeing favorite chemicals banned because they're toxic - especially carcinogenic - is to manufacture something as closely related as possible to the banned substance, where that substance has the benefit of not yet being banned. Game-on! You may have noticed this happened with Teflon, then with a series of replacements for Teflon, each banned in succession & being replaced with a novel PFAS chemical that has the virtue of being unknown as yet to the FDA. Being closely related in chemistry the manufacturer likely realizes they're toxic too, but the FDA has to go through the whole testing process again to get the new chemical listed, and meanwhile the company is free to sell products coated with it. Then say "Oops - who knew?" when the new chemical is banned, and do it all again. We've gone through the same process with Freon, then a string of replacement CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) as each was banned in succession. A modest proposal We could of course force businesses to test their products for safety BEFORE they release a product, but this wouldn't be playing the game. And of course this would impose undue harm on manufacturers, reducing their profits a bit. Compare that obviously egregious harm to your kid dying of cancer, and you can see why we give manufacturers a by. It's all a matter of perspective & proportion. Be reasonable; DuPONT, DOW & 3M certainly are.

I’ve only been diagnosed for just over a year, grew up in the countryside, participated in a lot of sport in the countryside and continued to live mostly in the countryside. I’ve been sprayed by crop spray twice, cycled frequently through fields of rapeseed, lived in wine growing country in NZ, drank lots of water from taps, eat cheese and have always drunk decaf coffee alongside regular coffee. My gut told me the pesticides played a role. Oh and I’m vegetarian so eat lots of vegetables and grains. Thank you so much for providing a scientific explanation. Coming for a sports background, I am using sport to help control the speed of progression. Dance is helping with reprogramming.boxing with frustration, tai chi with calming thoughts and walking still in the countryside helps with my mental health.

From what I understand, for any genetic testing, they can only test for the genetic markers that they are aware of. There may be other markers of the disease that researchers are unaware of. For example, my mother and some of her female relatives have had breast cancer. Even though no genetic component had been identified with my mother’s diagnosis, I was tested and came out negative for any of the currently known breast cancer markers. However, I was distinctly told to be vigilant in prevention/screening because it is possible that there could be the presence of currently unidentified markers within the genes of her side of the family. I will pray that your disease progresses slowly and that there continues to be the development of new treatments.

Smoking protects against Parkinson's as you said, but it also protects against Ulcerative colitis. I've smoked for 50 years. I hate that I love it so, so much. I can get Crohn's , but probably not Colitis. My transverse colon and omentum is or was trapped in a paraumbilical hernia, but I got surgery in November, but I still have the same lump and sometimes even worse symptoms. Point is, they thought I might have colitis, but I figured probably not, since I've been smoking since age 10. Man! Parkinson's is scary. My mom had a form that was attributed to lifelong psyche med use. RIP, mom. It's a prion disease, isn't it?

Orgone accumulators were originally developed by Willhelm Reich who was a student of Sigmund Freud whom Sigmund had refused to analyze. Probably because Willhelm in his book “Self-Analysis” had described his romantic encounters with horses in his youth. 😮

It might. Be worthwhile to try the “Brain tuner” described by Bob Beck to see in this had increase the dopamine in the brain like it would by balancing neurotransmitters to include more dopamine. Also the use of dopa Mucuna also known as cow vetch. It tastes okay for a bean and would go good with coffee. This would supply more building blocks for neurotransmitters, as exercise also would.

Heptachlor is not an organophosphate. This and paraquat are banned in many countries, and risk of exposure should be very low now for most sensible people. Most issues discussed are toxicological, so it seems you interviewed the wrong person. I enjoyed the interview, and I agree activism is necessary as improvement is difficult without sensible policies. I do not believe that organic foods give an advantage. I do belive we need to adhere to strict norms and collect data. This means restricting use of all compounds with insufficient tox data to complete a full risk evaluation. So many dangerous exposures have no substantial value to society, like dry cleaning, cigarettes, smog, ineffective medicines, etc. Somebody needs to reduce wasteful pollution and exposures, but there is currently few mechanisms to evaluate societal benefit of chemical use. It is all up to customers that do not get adequate information.

Hmmm .... strange pattern? Correction: We have noticed that it is not so much about floppy/relaxed hand, but her 4th and 5th fingers shake, so if she holds a cup with 1+2+3 fingers without touching by 4+5 fingers, it is okay. This is exactly what happens when she squezzes the handle of the cup = her 1+2+3 fingers are at work but not 4+5. Is it normal or strange? Looks like an ulnar pattern? Such a selective damage in substantia nigra or elswere? We are very puzzled by this. Hope, the defect (wherever it is) will regenerate with time. Is it possible?
@jamesthompson7282
@jamesthompson7282 2 ай бұрын
@@Peter-gu4zc Can she regenerate nerve damage over time? Depends. If you ask any neurologist they'll tell you no: not possible. Nerve damage is one-way: to the extent a nerve or neurons are damaged, they're done. You can't repair neural damage. That's chapter 1 in every neurology text, certainly until 2018, last time I checked at the University's Medical bookstore. Of course any neurosurgeon will tell you that's crap: they've been repairing & re-connecting nerves for 60 years: they do it every time they conduct an organ transplant. So yeah: you can repair nerve damage. Not easily, not quickly - it takes years - but it's doable. But you can't even start on it if you don't stop whatever it is that's caused the damage. And if its a chronic disease state or chronic environmental exposure, you'll have to figure that out first, stop it, and try to reverse any after-affects. For instance, if caused by heavy metals exposure you might be able to determine which, stop the exposure, then chelate the metals out. For some metals that's possible; for others, you're toast. I don't know about pesticides or herbicides, can't comment on whether those chemicals remain in your body's cells - for instance, fat cells. That's conceivable. And doing it with ingestible support of some sort is not the same as doing it to severed nerves in surgery. There are things that help, but they require hacks to make them work.

What if it's late-stage autism? The vast majority of autism is undiagnosed unaware and intellectually compensating. So if you have Parkinson's and are more curious than insulted, take the online RAADS-R and let's find out. I do not have Parkinson's (yet, that I know of) but I figured out my autism last year at 53. Have since also figured out that autistic catatonia is almost certainly getting several misdiagnoses but "early onset dementia" treated with contraindicated antipsychotics is surely hastening declines and seeming to confirm these misdiagnoses. So also curious how many with Parkinsons were stomach-sleepers as children whether or not they still are And how many have blood, injection, and injury phobias (because there's a heritable predisposition to these). I think I know the explanation for the environmental adrenal stimulus response connection between these phobias, stomach-sleeping, ASD, psychogenic somatoform functional and neurologic disorders, syncope, catatonia, and Parkinson's. TO BE CLEAR I AM NOT SAYING PARKINSON'S IS PSYCHOGENIC. I KNOW IT'S NEUROGENIC. BUT I THINK THERE'S SOME POSSIBILITY FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT DISORDERS OR SUPPRESSED AUTISTIC STIMS BECOME REAL MOVEMENT DISORDERS. They are all repressions of fear, but a lifetime of repressed fear I'm pretty sure I can explain the specific reason for being completely transparent to an individual. Read the following from the NLM PMC8181023 about a type of functional movement disorder I had in childhood (that went untreated and undiagnosed as I suspect most do) and decide for yourself if there’s a likely connection-> “Psychogenic PNES superficially resemble seizures, although unlike epileptic seizures, they are not induced by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. PNES are a physical manifestation of psychological distress, a dissociative state, and a common cause of transient loss of awareness and consciousness. Patients with PNES are often blamed for their symptoms as if they are making them up when, in fact, they are frightened, unaware of their emotional stress, and unable to find the mind-body link. PNES are as costly and disabling as epileptic seizures, although the health-related quality of life of patients with PNES is worse than that of patients with epilepsy. The diagnosis and treatment of PNES are often delayed because of barriers to care. It is important to recognize and communicate to patients that PNES is indeed a brain disorder, life experiences can change the brain to make one vulnerable to PNES, and the condition will improve with intervention. PNES may be considered a normal reaction to an overwhelming experience that exceeds and overloads a person’s nervous system and coping ability. Evidence shows that patients with PNES have heightened reactions to external or internal stress in the HPA axis and a dysregulated ANS. Functional connectivity is altered in patients with PNES, particularly in brain networks involving the cognitive-emotional-executive control circuitry. These changes may reflect an adaptation to long-term hypervigilance and an increased response to stressful stimuli. The truth about PNES lies beyond the dualistic framework of psychologic versus biologic. Rather, an integrative and inclusive biopsychosocial perspective is more suitable for addressing PNES, a condition that lies at the interface of neurology and psychiatry. One needs to break down the artificial divide between physical health and mental health and recognize the inseparability of the mind and body.”
