"The Parting Glass" is a Scottish traditional song that originated in the 18th century, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends.It has also long been sung in Ireland, where it remains popular and has strongly influenced how it is often sung today. It was purportedly the most popular parting song sung in Scotland before Robert Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne".

I'm the year 1411 my ancestors marched on Aberdeen from the highlands. I'm the great battle of Harlaw there are accounts of highland warriors throwing themselves upon the spears of their foes,trying to use their dying seconds to give one of their comrades the chance for a killing blow. Not exactly the same as kamikaze attacks but they did give their lives willingly,though no doubt terrified at the same time.

In Scotland(this is often wrongly mistaken as an Irish song,but no point quibbling lol)the New Year(a few days)has always been more important than Christmas,at least until lately. This song is still sung in various compositions. Happy New year from Scotland everyone

I'm Scottish and am highland traveller on fathers side and borderer on my mums. This is actually an old border driver song (Armstrong's goodnight it's usually called,though can be mixed up),anyway great composition. The borderers,both Scottish and English would have impressed the Samurai of old,ironically,both there betrays came to an end at the same time,the early 1600s. I'm not comparing the robber border clans of Scotland and England in the 16th century with ww2 kamikaze of course.

Actually on checking(I'm a military historian who has ironically written and had published more papers on Japan's ww2 army than anything lol) it seems the parting glass has become the more common title,my mistake.

I do not, I think they are honorable men. But it is sad and tragic that such sacrifices were needed. We can commemorate the memory of the men without saying more war would solve the problem.

Beautifully worded my freind. These young men were brave beyond my understanding. But they were YOUNG MEN. They should have had long happy lives,loves,heartbreaks,new loves,families and some would still even be alive. But none can insult their bravery.
