Effective explanation of the OSB habit, Brother Francisco and I appreciated the light humor which didn't diminish the symbolish of the Benedictine monk's garb, well done.

It is definitely a privilege to wear the small scapular under my shirt which I received when I entered the novitiate as an oblate of Saint Benedict. Thank you for your witness.

I have watched a few of your video/podcasts and wanted to say how much I have enjoyed watching so far! you are very easy to listen to, and you are quite informative - it is a gift to be proud of, proud in a good way, not a selfish way of course, I do hope your community there are quite appreciative of your talent/gift - I do hope to see more of your content - would I be permitted to suggest a topic? -aside from being RC and a male - who and under what circumstance can one enter into the Religious/Monastic life ? I could google this I suppose, but I thought it might be a good topic too +

I don't have what it takes to do what you have done, Br. Francisco; although I seriously considered it. Your videos offer a very interesting perspective on the vocation. Thank you, sir.

Having lived in an institution at a preparatory high school (3 years) and then in the U.S. Air Force (4 yrs.), joining the Church was rejected as a vocation. In both situations I had volunteered for, my future was spelled out for me. What a turn-off to have my life mapped out in advance. The plan was to complete each phase to complete a life goal. Where's the adventure of discovery and development? Thus, I rejected an institutional life. Instead, my life became an exploration of new wonders which eventually allowed me to find my work as an information manager (M.A. in Information Management). I am one happy camper.

Brother, this will probably never get a response but. What do you think of Monks that no longer wear the habit outside of liturgy? As someone discerning the life I'm starting to think of not wearing it as lame, obviously not enough to discourage me from a place but still relevant
@thebenedictproject
@thebenedictproject 3 ай бұрын
@@eraimattei that's a great question. To me, only wearing your habit in a liturgical context and no other points to something deeper about the community. A desire to break from a certain tradition, to be more modern or 'approachable', or a prioritizing of practicality over spirituality. Also, I could see it risking having monks reflect the lack of habit in their own actions, so that they are only in "monk mode" in prayer and otherwise are not. To me, the habit is necessary, not only for the individual and community, but for the Church as a whole.

Do monks wear a rosary on their belt? Can monks also wear a crucifix or miraculous medal over their habit ?
@thebenedictproject
@thebenedictproject Ай бұрын
Generally we do not wear a rosary, since our habits actually predate the popularization of the Rosary as a prayer. Also, only the Abbot is permitted to wear a cross/crucifix over his habit as a marker of his authority and position, while the monks are to all be uniform in appearance.

I am a frequent visitor to St. Vincent. You would find Mass pretty ordinary. Very good music. Excellent preaching. Individual monks run the range from very conservative to very liberal. All are in brotherly support of one another. The if differences are not the cause of the wars we see in so much of the Church
