No sooner has Mrs. Russell toasted her success in strategizing how best to woo Mr. Winterton to The Met than she meets his new young wife who is none other than Miss Turner, her former lady's maid. Mrs. Russell dismissed Miss Turner due to her inappropriate relationship with Mr. Russell, and this new development could threaten to expose myriad family secrets. To have the future of her position in society in the hands of someone she personally destroyed is not only ironic for Mrs. Russell, but just the sort of deliciously melodramatic comeuppance that The Gilded Age should be leaning into.

I think Bertha got so wrapped up in "winning the war", that she forgot that other women were as equally ambitious as her. Turner served her some much-needed humble pie.

Bertha can deal with Mrs Astor but this is too much even for her. 😂

Funny how the tables turn. That's why it's good to be nice and kind to everyone, even people you have to fire. Because their circumstances in life can surpass yours if you get too arrogant and full of yourself.

She can't just tell who Turner was because she pretended she didn't know her and hosted her in her drawing room. So it only remains for Bertha to clench her jaws. And who would believe it because Turner must have thought well how to hide her origin.

It's sad that people back then were just as petty as they are today, but such is life. Imagine all the goals they could've accomplished without being preoccupied with social standing/status. Too much time wasted on worrying about old money vs. new money, who had the biggest house/vacation house, who had a box at the opera, and who donated the most to charity. The more things change, the more things stay the same.

Exactly! Bertha fights for "her rightful place" in the society but she is terrified by the very idea that her maid could follow her steps. 😅

The most epic of returns! I love how they artfully shield Turner’s face from us until the moment of impact. Ohhh - it’s on!

We all put Turner and Armstrong in the worst “anything” category. This was epic! You have to admit. For me, her arrival at the Russell party at the house was EVERYTHING! That sassy arrogant flounce, the nose high to the heavens, eyes and head turned away, the way she de-bonneted, the length of the strings, she barely stood still long enough for her to catch it. Ironically the idea of slaves and servants weren’t that much different in rich society. I remember watching Queen. When the lady slave was distracted looking at the master, she dropped the mistresses sweater in the dirt. The mistress back handed her immediately in front of all her friends and nobody said a word. We know if that bonnet hit the floor, Adelaide was dead!!

Miss Turner did the ultimate level up, watch and learn. There’s a queen bee in town, both mrs Astor’s and Russell have to compete. Welcome Mrs Winterton - how high she climb at her rightful place.

Is this the only waltz that plays? Unless my ears were deceiving me, I could’ve sworn there was some passage of a different piece playing just before Mrs. Turner pops up, during Mrs. Russell’s conversation with Mr. McAllister and everything leading up to introducing Mrs. Turner.

Why all this dresses have ill fitted bodices?
@DanielGarrett0123

I hadn't noticed until you pointed it out, but it's a good question. Only Bertha and Aurora's actually fit well. And Bertha's is basically a strapless gown with fluffy sleeves attached, so not too challenging to get a good fit. Marian's is far too big in the front and rides up on her, and Turner's is a mess both front and back. It even looks like the back closes with a concealed zipper, which is both anachronistic and unsightly. Although the budget for the show seems to have grown this season, I suppose there are only so many gowns that are created new for the principals. The others are probably pulled from stock, but you'd think they could have afforded to make slight adjustments to the bodice fit.

I think the fabrics they used on the ballgowns are showing the issues more clearly. The daytime dresses look better made in my opinion.
