The Passage Journals are a humble set of small blank books in a bit exotic square format. Each is an object devoted to be of service to its owner, built portable and attractive to the eye. A true object of craft and a temple for your writings.
The four journals and other examples of our handmade craft work is available at the website shop at: www.iostopan.com/shop

Hi stopan, first off I need to say that I'm so grateful for your presence on youtube and your amazing, super informative (and soothing) videos. You are a huge inspiration for me. I've made my first journal 6 years ago and it's so shit but I love it so much. I've fallen in love with the slow process of traditionnal bookbinding and have decided to finally get into it seriously, partly thanks to you. It's stressful to invest so much money into the tools and materials, without guarantee that I'll be any good. But your videos just give me hope that making a beautiful book is all about care. And god dammit your designs are so pretty... I want to produce books as gorgeous as yours one day and I just dream it could become my job. If you'd allow me I need to ask a question that I haven't found a precise answer for : when it comes to stamping & carving goat leather, what things are important ? I read somewhere that it absolutely needs to be a vegetable tanning, otherwise it's stuffed with oils and wax. Does that guarantee that the leather will be good then ? Or are there other aspects I should look for ? What do you do when choosing yours ? Again, thanks a lot for what you do and have a wonderfull week

Hello, Esther and thank you for the kind words! Wishing you best of luck with your endeavour! I have addressed your questions before in a couple of places. Firstly you can check out my article on starting out with bookbinding here: www.iostopan.com/considering-bookbinding-a-short-first-step-guide/ Secondly, I made a video dedicated to the topic of leather in July, last year. You can find it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2acZZyDj7yjarM Thank you again!

Thank you, as always, Sven! One of these is actually like a smaller brother of your journal, as they were once from the same long signature. The longer half was made into a Cottage Journal and the shorter into a Passage one.

Long time fan! @stopan what is that tool your using at 18:05 ? What is its purpose? Sine? Like flat surface burnishing?
@Stopan
@Stopan 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, Allan and thank you very much! It is called a polishing iron and is used to polish the surface of the leather and even out any irregularities of the tooling. It is usually heated on a stove, much like the brass decorative tools.

My friend, I recently subscribed and am so inspired by your work. Absolutely stunning creations. Quick question - I’m a previous video you were using a nipping press - Robertbuilt I believe. I think it’s behind you in the beginning of this video. I’ve searched for it online with no luck - can you point me in the direction of the manufacturer?
@Stopan
@Stopan 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, Matt! I get that question a lot. These presses are very elusive and I consider myself lucky to have one. There is almost no information of this mysterious Robert, nor does he have a website of any kind. I stumbled upon this press on eBay on coincidence. Sometimes they pop up, I recommend searching regularly or setting up some kind of notification. Some people on bookbinding Facebook groups know the man personally I think, you can check there too. Best of luck!
