The past perfect is the 1st action happened in the past (had been sleeping), then the 2nd action happened in the past is "phone rang". Briefly, we use the past perfect when we have two actions both happened in the past, the 1st is past perfect the 2nd is simple past. for example; (1) I had cleaned the house, then (2) I went out.

What is the difference between the past continuous tense and past perfect continuous: for example: I was sleeping when the phone rang. ---- I had been sleeping when the phone rang. (I both not the same??) I cannot see any difference
