This conversation gives me absolute confidence in US Military power. After 70 years of global dominance you would think there would be an over confidence in their capabilities. However Gen. Berger shows that US Defence leadership are questioning assumptions, self-reflecting and listening to the changing environment of warfare.
@fematrailer2 жыл бұрын
His assessment is somewhat due to the specific culture of the US Marine Corps though. That mode of thinking does seem to become more diluted as you look higher and higher in the officer corps, but it's still more prevalent than in the other branches and the civilian leadership at the DoD. That's not to say that it doesn't exist in the other branches or that this mindset is better than those of the rest of the US Military, just that it's somewhat specific to the Marine Corps. The reason why I'm telling you this is that you are hearing from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, and that you should not expect the rest of the U.S. Military and DoD to be on the same page. The Marine Corps has always been a minority in the U.S. Military, and has very rarely been in the driver's seat when it comes to decision-making. General Mattis, one of the most famous and well-liked Marine officers alive right now resigned as the Secretary of Defense because the administration at the time and the government wouldn't listen to him about the Kurdish Allies and the draw-down in Afghanistan. What I'm saying is that if you like the direction the Marine Corps is heading or what it's saying, don't be disappointed when the rest of the country and the military apparatus doesn't follow suit, or even let them go in that direction.

As a former student of the University of Science, Music, and Culture for several years and an amateur military historian, I really appreciated the perspective of the Commendent on Ukraine and the moderation of the MC. On Ukraine, I have been surprised that little has been said of historical lessons that seem to be coming in now. Such a mobile force should take the lessons that Napoleon and Hitler learned at war, parts of the old Russia depended upon Mother Winter and her MUD to interfere with the plans of the aggressive invaders. What is now Ukraine was a part of the invasion routes. Even with the existing roads, we are seeing invading tadtical formations in the mud. As the winter thaw continues, it will get worse. This might be part of the reason that the infantrymen numbers have so low to date. Imagine the old Russian tactic of infantry riding tanks when antitank missiles are targeting the convoy. They might have some difficulty ordering the unarmored troops to ride. Yes, this will be a time for study by many. Great topic and interview.

Racker you claim to be an amateur military historian. I would like to emphasise AMATEUR. Napoleon attacked through what now is Belorussia and NOT through Ukraine, amateur. Nice interview. General Berger is understandably cautious about giving public advice, which he knows our adversaries will study in minute detail. But he does specifically mentions the vulnerability of tanks. The shear number of tanks destroyed by an individual carrying a shoulder launched missile, shows that tanks are no longer worth the logistical to deliver and support them. The first Gulf war probably represents the pinnacle of tank success, with a rapid decline since then

It frees up our special Operation forces to seize airports for the Air Force and such to bring in all the big guns and huge army element..... joint operations is so important and coming in from the sea gives us a huge advantage. Semper Fi General. I'm around veterans all day. Work, high school friends, work friends, the VFW, volunteering. You name it. I'm around veterans everyday. Us Marines always get to talking like we do. And the opinions been mixed on the Marine Corps disbanding it's tanks in favor of new Amphibious Assault vehicles. I had asked this question 22 years ago when I was in the Marine Corps. I asked why we still have all these tanks? We seldom, if ever, deploy our tanks. The Army usually comes roaring in after the Marines got the war underway with all that stuff. But the Marines don't bring them with the initial attack because they're too damn heavy, they take up too much space and we're not fighting gigantic tank battles with anyone anymore. We haven't since Desert Storm but even then, with the smart bombs being shown to us for the first time with laser guided missiles, and the Patriot Missile, etc. All the stuff we all watched on CNN in 1990 in real time, things we had never seen before, the writing was on the wall. Tanks were becoming obsolete. You have this $4 million Tank (maybe more, I don't know) and all the cost to maintain it, arm it, and not to mention the crew, that can easily be taken out by drone now. It's air superiority or you lose. The General is right. Of course I would say that if I was still in the Marine Corps. But as a civilian I can disagree, so I'm speaking honestly, I think the General is absolutely correct. This stuff costs lives, it costs money. And while we're busy equipping ourselves with weaponry from the last century, countries like China (of whom will be our next enemy) is Spending their money on R&D for weaponry we have only seen in Sci-Fi movies thus far. The General is right, we have to stay modern, we have to stay current. If we were still getting in huge tank battles like we did in WWII because we lacked the technology then ok. But we're not, and we're seeing things now that were dreamed up by Hollywood in the 80s come to life. give some of the tanks to the Army, just in case. Put some in museums, scrap the rest. Or refit it for something else but the age of tanks has come to an end. And we can see that, in Ukraine. Look at what that light armed civilian infantry is capable of doing to Russia's tanks? We should be thankful we can learn by Russia getting their asses whooped instead of our own crews.

What makes the Marines so effective is a spiritual connection with their brothers in arms. We trained with M1 Garand rifles in the 60's, our equipment dated back to the Korean war. We didn't complain, or make any excuses, we were Marines, and that was all we needed. And what cements all of this is boot camp. Money will not affect the fighting spirit of Marines. Mercenaries will fight for money, but they won't die for it.

If you survey the list of current active duty officers you find they are of different races, sex(es) and backgrounds. America still has much to improve, but together as a nation we are strong because of our differences and unique perspectives. God bless all of you.
@douglassmith12152 жыл бұрын
There is a great discussion at 25:50 on the reasons why traditional tank warfare is doomed. He talks about it in the context of the Marines, but the argument likely applies to all forces. The Russians in Ukraine are fighting a battle from the 1980s, while the Ukrainians have weapons from the 2020s. I would venture to say that in 20 more years, the era of the manned fighter bomber will also be over, replaced entirely by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
@georgemorley10292 жыл бұрын
The tools will remain but they will have less or different utility than they once did. UAVs operating in tandem swarms with single manned aircraft operating as centralised control units is another hybrid option, your F35B pilot turning his aircraft into a miniature command position that can fight itself if required and hand over control to other F35Bs coming onto station while they depart to refuel. So there is probably a place for all these capabilities at the right time and in the right circumstances.
@douglassmith12152 жыл бұрын
@@georgemorley1029 I agree with your more nuanced view. I see that "loitering munitions" (like Switchblade) can be launched from the air and sea as well as land. The aircraft could have a more "standoff" role, although eliminating the human in the cockpit reduces weight tremendously, thereby massively extending flight time. I notice that even the Ukrainian Stugna-P anti-tank guided missile is operated remotely 50m away. It's probably not long before these ATGM become fully "robotic" or at least controlled from several km away.

M1 Abrams tank cost (2020) 6.1 million dollars each. Shoulder fired Javelin missile that can destroy it cost (2020) $78,000 each. That's bang for your buck. Tanks are all but history, and the war in Ukraine is the nail in the coffin.
@MarcosElMalo22 жыл бұрын
That simple economic argument is strong on its own, but it’s even stronger when you start to count the cost of protecting the tanks in battle environment filled with simple RPGs to sophisticated AT systems like the javelin. For a force like the Marines, tanks have become a liability, a waste not just of money but of many other resources to protect and maintain them. Which is not to say that tanks have no role whatsoever in our armed forces, but for the roles played by the Marine Corps, tanks are like tits on a bicycle.

I love the way the interviewer slips in the tank question, he asked what Berger thought of the absence of Russian ground forces accompanying their tanks in Ukraine and labeled it as a weakness. Gen Berger immediately responds, “I don’t know if I’d call it a weakness,” both knowing that Berger has ridded the Corps of it’s tank units. Well played Sir!

As a Canadian I would appreciate a little credit how much better our training/support has enabled Ukraine lions after they win
@TheZampognaro2 жыл бұрын
Do you think that Americans, either military or civilian, don't appreciate the training and support that Canada has provided the Ukrainians? Why would you think that? As a former U.S. Marine Corps officer, I have always admired the training regimen of the Canadian Forces. It is what allows you to punch far above your weight in armed conflict.

Lie and propoganda?
@MarcosElMalo22 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, but I think that comes down to issues with the Soviet command structure that were mentioned early in the video. When junior leaders such as NCOs, lieutenants, etc. are not given decision making power, are discouraged from showing initiative, and are not even trained to do these things, your command level officers have to expose themselves to enemy fire when they show up to micromanage the battles.

When you see the wisdom of our military leadership one have to wonder who's to be blame for catastrophic and humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan.
@bipolarbear99172 жыл бұрын
That's easy, Donald Trump. It was former president Donald Trump that set the agreement with the Taliban insurgents in February 2020 that all US forces would withdraw from Afghanistan. The Doha agreement was signed in February 2020 and set a date for the US to withdraw its troops. That's why President Biden had no choice. Gen Frank McKenzie said the deal had a "really pernicious effect" on the Afghan government and military. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin agreed, saying the agreement had helped the Taliban get "stronger". Setting a hard date was a huge mistake and helped exacerbate the chaos during the withdrawal.
@dennisplatte75062 жыл бұрын
What catastrophic withdrawal? Our generals got us out with only 17 deaths----in what is always a very dangerous exit from a War. How many did we lose a month in Vietnam? Think we lost about 175 Marines alone a month in Vietnam's heavy years. And add in the Army and Navy and AF we were losing 700 a month. So how is losing only 18 dead in 5 weeks a catastrophic withdrawal. I'm guessing that many of us thought we'd lose a few planes leaving Afghanistan to missiles----but somehow the generals didn't lose even one exiting plane! Yes-----we could have and should have gotten our 2500 troops out in 7 or 10 days-----but we wanted to get most civilians out that wanted out. I'd give our generals and A for the withdrawal----what would you give them? And the 17deaths were from 1 suicide bomber----not from the Taliban. How do you protect from a suicide guy? Not sure you can. Biden and Trump did a good job getting us out----but Obama said he'd get us out and never did what he promised. Biden----with help from Trump got us out much better than our exit from Vietnam.
@bipolarbear99172 жыл бұрын
@@dennisplatte7506 Well there was chaos during the withdrawal according to everyone concerned. And what help from Trump apart from poorly thought out decision to sign the Doha Agreement and set a hard date to begin with. As usual, 'Everything Trump Touches Dies' - Rick Wilson (former Republican)
@dennisplatte75062 жыл бұрын
@@bipolarbear9917 Trump got us down from about 25,000 to 2500 in 4 years. To me that made Biden's job of ending the War a lot easier. Who thought there was chaos------with hindsight? Maybe 100 million that liked Trump------plus lots of media? Yes it seemed hectic-----but what the hell do you expect when trying to exit a 19 year war. It went so much better than I expected-----and probably what most American's expected. I you had asked American's how many planes and people they expected to get shot down or die-----what would your guess have been? Mine would have been at least a couple of planes with 150 soldiers on each plane. Do you remember the ending days of Vietnam-----that was a spectacle------but then again maybe as well as could have been expected. How the heck do you withdraw from enemy territory? I just think we were so lucky to get out with well under 20 US deaths.

Russia doesn't tightly integrate its infantry with its mechanized armor because their strategic goal is atypical: to permanently erase the footprint of the invaded country's people. It takes a while for tanks to finish off the total devastation of a city that larger projectile ordnance of missiles and artillery missed. This is the modern and barbaric Russian Doctrine of War. They've been using it in Syria for years. Before Syria, they first used the strategy of annihilation on the city of Grozny during The Second Chechen War (which putin launched right after he became president and allegedly ordered false-flag attacks in Russian cities to blame the Chechen separatist movement as a pretext for war.) Prior to putin, Russia used more traditional coupling of armor and infantry in Afghanistan and The First War in Chechnya. Both wars were disasters for Russia.

A surprising and informative interview by who? The Washington Post. Listen twice because the interview of the Marine General is important for what he doesn't say, also, a strong tell is his abandonment of heavy armor as a tool. It's clear to many, we'r have things we've not shown offensively and defensively.
