Aiden Wilson Tozer was born April 21, 1897, on a small farm among the spiny ridges of Western Pennsylvania.
Tozer's forte was his prayer life which often found him walking the aisles of a sanctuary or lying face down on the floor. He noted, "As a man prays, so is he." To him the worship of God was paramount in his life and ministry. "His preaching as well as his writings were but extensions of his prayer life," comments Tozer biographer James L. Snyder. An earlier biographer noted, "He spent more time on his knees than at his desk."
Tozer's love for words also pervaded his family life. He quizzed his children on what they read and made up bedtime stories for them. "The thing I remember most about my father," reflects his daughter Rebecca, "was those marvelous stories he would tell."
Son Wendell, one of six boys born before the arrival of Rebecca, remembers that, "We all would rather be treated to the lilac switch by our mother than to have a talking-to by our dad."
Tozer's final years of ministry were spent at Avenue Road Church in Toronto, Canada. On May 12, 1963, his earthly pursuit of God ended when he died of a heart attack at age 66. In a small cemetery in Akron, Ohio, his tombstone bears this simple epitaph: "A Man of God."
Some wonder why Tozer's writings are as fresh today as when he was alive. It is because, as one friend commented, "He left the superficial, the obvious and the trivial for others to toss around. . . . [His] books reach deep into the heart."
His humor, written and spoken, has been compared to that of Will Rogers--honest and homespun. Congregations could one moment be swept by gales of laughter and the next sit in a holy hush.
For almost 50 years, Tozer walked with God. Even though he is gone, he continues to speak, ministering to those who are eager to experience God. As someone put it, "This man makes you want to know and feel God."

Same here and it illuminated so much for me! I know what he means by a time of anxiety and darkness, I've been in it for a while and wondering why. Interestingly Ive also been wanting to be filled with the spirit, never thought to connect the two.

Good advice from Tozer: nobody in the Bible or history are filled with the Spirit without a disturbance and an anxiety. Everybody want to be happy nowadays. We need to be broken by the Spirit and die for ourselves (very hard to do).

My happiness, my filling, my success.... What will God do to and for me, for me(not for Himself) Folks, including me, tend to forget that it's not all about us. We were created for His pleasure, not for Him to pleasure us. Do we have "I" trouble? take care.

"We're as full of God as we want to be", that's so true! We need to obey the Spirit in order to do not quench it. Our lack of will to obey is the reason of our coldness! The cost to obey God in our society is enormous today. Then, we do not obey, which results in our coldness. Then we ask why our lives are so without the presence of God! Thanks for sharing this sermon! God bless you!

I was thinking today how Christians go on and on about having sound doctrine. But what God calls us to is obedience. Sound doctrine without a godly lifestyle , is like having a fancy car but filling the tank with water. May I turn from any worldly ways still in me 😥 ❤️✝️🙏

We need to get to a place of despair and inner lolliness to be in a state where we are satisfied only with God. In this state we'll get close to God and be filled with him. But to get there, we have to go through a dark night of the soul. We need to pass through his to get the free gift of the bliss of the Spirit.

I just found out today that I'm working with his grandson and he's grandpa age himself. I'm glad I decided to look into his preaching. I've had the Holy Ghost for 30 years and those who hunger and thirst after righteousness shall be filled. I don't think you'll find this in the modern churches, look for a church that preaches against sin (they all say they do) but one more on the old-fashioned side, one where they speak of God's direction and miracles!

The Spirit never gets gradually on someone. The Spirit falls in an act! The false preachers tells us that the filling come little by little. That's a way to justify the lack of filling in their congregations. The oil in poured out at once! Didn't happen gradually. It happens instantaneouslly. We don't get this blessing because we do not want pay the cost. I agree with Tozer.

Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit
@preachingtruth7418
@preachingtruth7418 10 жыл бұрын
The pericope runs from Eph. 5:15-21, where it seems that Paul wants the Christians in Ephesus to live their lives in a wise way, which consists of making the most of their time and investing it in the wisest way for accomplishing the will of God. And with an imperative he tells them to understand what the will of the Lord is in v. 17. And then with 2 imperatives (command) in v. 18 he commands them not to get drunk, but be filled with the Spirit. Notice the contrast in v. 17 and then also in v. 18. In v. 17, do not be foolish BUT understand what the will of the Lord is, and then in v. 18, do not get drunk BUT be filled with the Spirit. Now the translators chose a capital "S" suggesting that this is a reference of the Holy Spirit, 3rd person of the Godhead. However, this could be a reference to the spirit little "s" and be a reference to the nature and character of God, the spirit, that is the mind and heart. Whatever he means, it is the opposite of what getting drunk would accomplish. Getting drunk causes disillusionment and keeps your mind from thinking the kind of thoughts that are pure (Phil. 4:8, Rom. 12:2). But notice also that Paul tells them in this passage how they are to be filled with the spirit in vs. 19-21. 1. speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody. 2. always giving thanks for all things... 3. subjecting ourselves to one another... Singing emphasizes the need to put pure thoughts into our minds, pure words, the truth. giving thanks emphasizes the need to pray and be content, count your blessings not your curses. And being subject to one another emphasizes our need to become like Christ, selfless and loving one another (Phil. 2:2-5).

1) Present your bodies as living sacrifices (vessels) 2) ask the Lord to fill you (from a pure heart, good conscience and sincere faith) 3) be obedient to Jesus commands. ( To believe and to love one another). ( To forgive others and walk in purity) 4) filling comes through hearing the words. (Could be through preaching, a recording online, a conversation with a friend, ect. But it comes through hearing the words)
