As a current M2 in the midwest, I was considering pathology even with the knowledge that I may be geographically located. After looking at the website mentioned in this video, it encourages me even further to pursue the field. Working with a microscope/computer in a quiet environment just sounds like a dream.

Yay NJMS! I'm an alumni! Pathology is a great field for MD/PhDs! Honestly, pathologists who do what they are interested in usually have higher job satisfaction. After doing residency, you will get a feel of which which subspecialty(s) you enjoy. I feel most pathologists really enjoy subspecialized signout when possible. Subspecialties with high volume are historically GI, Derm and Heme.

Recently, I was looking ahead to see what the pathology job market was and even though, nationwide there's lots of jobs available, I noticed that if you want to stay in one particular area, the jobs were not plentiful. Unfortunately yes for academics in the bay area as there are only 2, ucsf and stanford. Though, 150 seems a little low.

Enjoyed your video but I don't think it's accurate to say that one can more easily transition from academia to private practice for reasons you mentioned, which are the heavy subspecialization that occurs in academia. When you're fresh out of training is the time to continue bolstering your skills in multiple facets of pathology via private practice. I rarely receive applications from academic pathologists since they know many of their skills have atrophied due to their subspecialization. Personal opinion... While I think it's comfortable for people to sit in their area of focus, I don't think you become a better pathologist. Better to hyperfocus later in your career then differentiate too early.

So, just trying to get more info about the work life and everything. Since, im not American ( I'm studying for USMLE to come to the US) may i ask about how things gonna work if someone as a pathologist try to have his/her own lab? Like is it common in the US? I thought maybe it can give you more income since it's pretty common in my country. I googled it a lot but I haven't found any useful info about it.

I've worked with many pathologists in my day. Pressure can be hard when a lot of frozen's come @ the same time as a bunch of autopsies. Those are shitty days. Iv'e seen it get to people. Just never toss scalpel blades @ gross assistant. They have a shitty job with less money !

Hello, I am a medical student in Colombia, I am interested in pathology in the United States, I have already presented Step 1 and obtained a pass. First of all, thank you very much for your videos, they have been very enlightening about the path I am embarking on, I really appreciate your time on this. I have two questions. I love research very much, but the tenuer-line approach was not very clear to me. As a pathologist, can I work as a researcher in a university hospital? is the compensation similar to those who do not do research or is it lower? Are these job positions hard to come by? and lastly, you mentioned that you are an associate professor at stanford, do you think you could possibly host an international student for a pathology rotation? If it's not a bother, could you help me with information on how to get a rotation in Stanford? Thanks a lot

In most academic centers, there is some to a lot of expectations for you to participate in research; however there is definitely the expectation for you to do clinical practice, which is usually the majority of your time

Well, keep in mind that is the average. Academic pathologists definitely make less than that number. The big money can be made in private practice. But, yes, pathologists do make decent money.

Do pathology attendings in hospitals also work for 4days/week or 2weeks/month as full time?

Well...that's really depend on the department or practice policy. Generally full time attending in academics involve a certain percentage of clinical work (ie. 60-70%), and other 30-40% is for research, teaching and PTO. In private practice, it's usually 5 days/week expect for weeks scheduled for PTO.

Keep at it and don't let the negative energy around about pathology jobs worry you. Answering this question is hard since I can't predict the future, but there will also be need for more pathologist, especially in big academic centers where the specimen volume increases every year.
