What’s happening in this The Patriot movie clip?
Benjamin (Mel Gibson from What Women Want and Braveheart) leads a guerrilla warfare.
Gabriel (Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight and 10 Things I Hate About You) sends a letter to his beloved telling her that the war continues but he can't wait to be with her, and that he thinks about her all the time.
At one point, Gabriel tells the others that although they are at war, they should be a little more lenient. For example, if an English soldier surrenders to them, they should not kill him.

What’s the movie The Patriot about?
In 1776 South Carolina, widowed farmer and legendary war veteran Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson from What women want and Braveheart) wants to stay out of the American Revolutionary War. However, as he helplessly watches his family torn apart by the savage forces of the British Redcoats, he finds himself unable to remain silent. He recruits a band of reluctant volunteers, including his son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight and 10 Things I Hate About You), to take up arms against the British.
To protect his family’s freedom and his country’s independence, Benjamin will do anything. He will face pain, betrayal, redemption, revenge and love during his journey.

@@johnharris6655 At that time none of the British army used rifles. They had all muskets. Not all colonials had rifles, or even really many of them; but enough did that it gave a noticeable advantage. A contemporary rifle was accurate for 100 yards in the hand of a competent shooter, and much further for a true marksman. Regardless of skill a smoothbore musket couldn't hit an elephant at 100 yards. As shown in this clip and throughout the film, the colonials intentionally shot officers first. This was seen as dirty fighting by the British, but it was extremely effective. Famously at the Battle of Saratogo, a sharpshooter mortally wounded a British general from the then unheard of distance of over 300 yards.

If you notice closely, only 1 line fired first, then the 2nd stood up only AFTER the first volley of shots to fire on the opposite side. While it violates modern gun safety principles, back then it would've been used to stun/confuse/paralyze a convoy of soldiers quite effectively because the soldiers would've been confused at which direction to fire.

The first time many members of the British Military ever handled a Musket or other fire arm is when they joined the army. Firearms were often restricted to the Aristocracy for fear of the commoners using them to over throw the King, hence the 2nd Amendment. The first time most men in the Continental Army handled a Musket is when they were a young boy and needed to hunt to eat. A British General once commented that Americans were far better marksmen than their British counterparts and were better at reloading and shooting. Face in the colonies, you took a gun with you every where you went.

LMAO y'all remember the Hague convention (i think that's the name). That's the one that said not to use expanding bullets in warfare, and why our military has almost always used FMJ rounds... Well a few years back they started openly issuing hollowpoint 9mm rounds for their service sidearms. Critics claimed "THAT"S ILLLEGAL BY *insert* CONVENTION!!!!" The Army responded "We never actually signed that agreement." :'D
@silentghoust
@silentghoust 2 жыл бұрын
That wasn't the point of the FMJ. A dead soldier will likely be a low priority to deal with in a firefight. A wounded soldier takes 2 people to care for. Meaning you just taken care of 3 soldiers in a fight.

The word "guerrilla" didn't enter the English language until the early 19th Century. It comes from Spanish, which means "little war", and it was adopted by the British when they assisted the Spaniards during the Napoleonic wars, since it was the word the Spaniards used to describe the tactics use by the Spanish militia to fight back against the French troops when they occupied Spain. Not really a mistake in the movie, since the word is never uttered in it. And it's understandable that it's been used in the title of the video for clarity sake, but still, I think it's worth mentioning it.

@@the.jk.adventures That IS a correct definition, but not the right one for this context. In this context it means _mercy._ To NOT accept surrender is to give "no quarter". Hence to yell "No quarter!" while riding into battle would mean the same thing as "No mercy!". To show at least some mercy is to "give quarter", and giving "full quarter" means total mercy. Gibson's character is ordering the men to absolutely not harm or mistreat British soldiers once they've surrendered.

I’d need to see the whole movie again as it’s been YEARS and I don’t exactly remember the entire story or timeline the whole movie encompasses. But I’m assuming this movie was following only one single militia. Since it’s Cornwallis I’m assuming this scene is 1780 or 81. My only gripe with a lot revolutionary war time pieces is they tend to overdo exactly what Americans were able to achieve in the earlier years of the War. It took a lot of convincing France to join as they didn’t want to join a losing fight. Washington was notoriously known for falling victim to the same trap where a British army would break off into two paths, Washington would engage the smaller army inevitably give up his flank to a larger army. He was an incredibly poor battlefield tactician. He was however an amazing leader of men which is what we needed at that time when you consider how he came close to losing his army once it came time for them to decide between leaving or re-enlisting.

The modern American conception that the British had no conception of irregular warfare, or that they didn't know how to deal with it, is a true testament to the power of historical illiteracy. I mean, it's not like the British had been fighting near-constant low level conflicts in colonial America for almost two hundred years by that point or anything.
