Dan is obviously a great mechanic/technician that’s had some excellent experience and is very good at explaining what he is doing and his methods and reasoning. As an old school mechanic myself I can not fault his workmanship, methods or how he explains how and why! Faultless video clip and runs rings around a lot of uTube mechanics or so called mechanics.

These symptoms sound so much like what's going on with my Land Rover Discovery. Any serious uphill load, and it overheats and begins puking coolant, but I can do 120 miles or so on the flat, and it's fine. Been driving me nuts. Finally bought a head gasket set and some ARP studs, and going to see what I find when I disassemble it.

Dan is the MAN! Great to have you back Dan. Maybe just pipe in now and then - I think we all love to hear your words of wisdom, honesty and brute force logic. I for one listen intently and take heed. You are the oracle of the Aussie Arvos mob. "I expect maybe 63.5kW at the wheels". I don't know - you haven't done anything for flow, so maybe, but if you are getting higher torque lower down that should mean you get to 63.5kW sooner in the rev range, so, you should expect a higher peak power? Fingers crossed.

Hey mate, love your content and love the fact you guys always have a go but after 40 years of engine building theres a couple things you really need to know. Never, EVER, use an abrasive on an assembled block. This puts very fine grinding grit into the bores and can quickly cause damage. You wont see it and it will cause accelerated wear and damage. Never, EVER, used compressed air to clean debris out of the cylinders. This forces grit and other small particles between the piston and bore that you then cannot remove and guaranteed to cause damage and wear to bores, rings and pistons. When the head is off, cover with plastic or glad wrap, not rags, as they drop a lot of lint and debris. Cleanliness is paramount in long life of you engine. Always use a vacuum cleaner to get any debris out of the cylinders. Hope this helps

Totally understand the desire to do things properly so you know you can rely on the car. I’ve got a hj75 cruiser and I bought it to start camping and going on trips. I’ve just finished doing rear axle bearings, axle seals, bearing seals, wheels cylinders and drums/shoes. But I got carried away and pulled the backing plates of, wire wheeled them, painted them… because I couldn’t bear to do all that work and fit new parts to dusty old mounting surfaces. While I’ve got these things apart, it’s a small bit of extra time and effort to really make it look a million bucks.

picked up a 89 patrol this week, partially modified, tb42, new head, rebuild trans, shonkin wiring for 12v system (will redo properly) sitting on 33 muddies, little rust in the roof, for $7k, only reason i even considered the 89 patrol was because of this patrol here on aussie arvo.

Well done great to see your work and tips thank you Once you start better off rip it out rebuild it all stronger and a small turbo on it low boost lumpy cam and bang all sweet. I had a similar thing with a td42 then ended lifting the lid off it when towing. I pulled it apart then ended up whole engine out fully rebuilt by southern engines as I didn’t have time unfortunately. Set it up for boost and now runs a healthy 300 hp at flywheel at 24 pound.

Heads up on the timing chain marks, a couple years ago I did a full top end on a 2005 Suzuki XL7 after the owner let the chain go till it derailed bent all 12 exhaust vales, I was all done went to start it and it would try but just couldn't quite go, did a bunch of testing and made the call to pull the timing cover off and look, low and behold the NEW chain had the marks in the wrong places! So hang on to your old chain and check them against the new ones! could have been real ugly but I got lucky.

Great seeing you back. Mine is 500,000km. And 90-95psi I have a second hand motor with a cracked block plus a full rebuild kit ready to go. (Need to finish Datsun l18 and chev 216 first) This is great seeing you do this before I start mine. Still trying to decide on intake as I have three sets. 1, carby for reliability in the outback. 2, efi for drivability 3, t25 hi mount turbo and water intercooler for easier highway running. Any suggestions? Personally I am keeping standard cam for crawling and factory efi may not always cope with cam changes. Any reason you blow dirt out not vacuum it out?
@darcykeddell49302 жыл бұрын
if the cam makes more torque at less rpm it would be better for crawling, efi or turbo are the best options
@brucebaxter69232 жыл бұрын
@@darcykeddell4930 Cool. You don’t think that carby and points would be easier to fix and harder to break doing the cape York trip or tannami desert? I haven’t seen an aftermarket cam that improves torque at idle (I don’t bother going over 3000rpm) But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
@darcykeddell49302 жыл бұрын
@@brucebaxter6923 not idle but he says in the video it makes power earlier than the standard cam because they can customise the cam to his exact use where nissan had to make it fit a wide use case. Electronic ignition and efi is the way to go if you really wanted to be 100% safe have some injectors spare and inline filters but I don't see efi being an issue

Hi, I noticed that the coolant pipes for the LPG reducer/evaporator look a little high, and they go up and over, which can cause air pockets in the cooling system. They also look higher than the top of the radiator. Ask me how I know about incorrectly run LPG pre-heater hoses 😭. I had to do almost the exact same job on my Jeep. Head got warped, overheated, pushing out coolant. After the rebuild, I sorted out the LPG coolant pipes, and now it's fine, no coolant issues at all.

ive had 2 GQs over past 10 years and both had a moded water system with extra hose from rear head to radiator, both 450,000Ks and no probs at all, also has same gas system and shitty air filter that runs a v8 valiant filter lol shit will always get into fuel bowl and block main jet as top is open :( passenger engine mount i drilled and put bolt right through as they always break,

Hi Dan Very informative I have a couple of questions, , Is your 300a imco mixer (assuming it’s not 225a) 1 and 20 or 50 and 70. The smaller 300a was great for economy on falcon 250s. Holden 253s ect but leaned out if you drove hard. On my impco gas 351 xd Ute I set up a pair of solenoids to turn on and off the vacuum advance. The second solenoid releases line vacuum after switching off. This meant you could advance the timing to the point of detonation under full load , which suits gas cruising and economy then switch off advance under load, towing up steep hills or when you want full throttle. There’s also a primer button solenoid to help cold starting on gas. You can also update the converter size to a bigger Impco if the tuning shows lean conditions. Great project. We used to use gas on most of our cars, in the early 1990s I used to pay 19c litre. Regards Alex
