PCE was my childhood memory, my 2nd console ever owned (My 1st was Famicom and its disk system). Like 2 years after I owned my PCE, I further bought the CD Rom2 "briefcase" and that amazing add on opened up my dream CD games library: YS 1&2, Fighting Street, Cobra, Wonder Boy, Far East of Eden etc. The CD quality music together with the vivid graphics made me hardly believed it's a 8-bit gaming console omg...it's totally comparable with its rival at that time - the SEGA Mega Drive! If NEC will ever remake this console I'll definitely buy it!

During the early 90s, I worked on several of the PC Engine games to localize them into English - a couple of the Bonk games, two sports games and Dungeon Master III: Theron's Quest. Excellent machine in its day.

I have a Turbo Duo that I inherited from my dad, with a whole bunch of games. My favorite one is called Magical Chase it is such a fun side scrolling shooter. Love them. He was a avid fan of Hudson games and collected as many as he could. The games are so much fun! Recently purchased a Super Console Cube X3 that has like 110,000 games from sixty consoles. There are PC engine titles from Hudson that I didn't even know existed, and they are fantastic to play. The titles my dad bought are on it also. Great video, happy gaming!! :)

What struck me as nuts was having all those Sega titles on the Engine. Outrun, Alterbeast, and Afterburner to name a few. Also some other solid arcade ports were Operation Wolf, Double Dragon 2 and Chase HQ. I've been wrestling with selling off my game collection and the hardest is going to be the PC/Turbo stuff. I'm probably one of the few people that have their original Turbo games complete and mint (outer cardboard boxes) still plus I have a ton of sealed PC Engine games.

+Otis Whitaker I can't stand it either. I'm not sure at what point the FPS become just "shooter," but we have decades of shooters prior, and "Shoot 'em Up" and "Shmup" just sounds ridiculous, like it's a Wild West game or something. Come on. They're shooters! Oh well.
@Harp00nX9 жыл бұрын
My rant on the subject: I still call shoot em ups shoot em ups (shmups is a retarded phrase that just shouldn't not be said out loud), don't let the shitty fps genre steal the title shoot em up away from it's rightful owner. Make people call those games first person shooters or third person shooters or doom clones whatever but fps lovers can fuck off trying to steal shoot em ups from a game genre that has been called that since the 70s.
@JesseDylanMusic9 жыл бұрын
+Barry's World I'd honestly never even heard them called "shoot 'em ups" until fairly recently. To me, they were always shooters, since Galaga or Space Invaders. Doom and the like were first-person shooters, and X-Wing and the like were space combat simulators or something along those lines. :)

It's amazing that the PC Engine came out in 1987. I suddenly realized I had never once played a PC Engine game which is something I fixed in early 2014. Bonk's Adventure surprised me with how fun and well designed it was. Shortly after, I decided to pick up a few of the base units, as the original white system and the two Core Grafx models are so beautifully designed. I had a Master System growing up, so the cards didn't surprise me, but the HuCards are fun to collect. You put it so well pointing out how very Japanese the system is, and it's fun to take chances on obscure, inexpensive HuCards and seeing how the games are. It's funny you put this video up now as I was just planning to investigate some strange games I haven't played much yet as well as seeing what other games are available from the sellers I like. Great video, HCG. I definitely agree that the PC Engine rocks.

Great point, for many systems, the region you want is based on where it was popular. Definitely buy a PC Engine or a Japanese Saturn if collecting for those consoles. I'll bet you're wondering why the cover of "Double Dungeons" has a big "W" on it. In Japan, "W" is often used instead of "double". A burger with an extra patty on it might be called a "W burger" on the menu, but it'd be pronounced "double burger", for example.

I didn't learn about the system until a Homestar Runner cartoon mentioned it about ten years ago. The TG16 was sort of before my time. I'm old enough to remember when the SNES and Genesis were still current, but I was just a little kid. My only exposure to video games was what I got to play and see firsthand, and what I saw in commercials. I didn't start learning to read until 1994, so I wouldn't have been able to read about it in gaming magazines even if I knew those magazines existed. I didn't have any older brothers or cousins or anything like that around who could have mentioned it, either. Relatively obscure stuff like this, the Jaguar, AES, Lynx, etc were a complete unknown until I got into high school and was able to both use the internet more often and read the stash of old game magazines that my art teacher had lying around.

@MN12BIRD9 жыл бұрын
+musixmadness You're right it's basically just air inside. Over half the motherboard is just wasted space with nothing on it. They simply wanted it to be bigger as to not make it look like a toy to the American buyers.
@Drewsefer899 жыл бұрын
+musixmadness I believe back then the term was "Bigger is Better". Just like how In America the art style of the game covers was changed cause they thought Americans wouldn't like the Japanese style they thought we wouldn't want to spend money on something tiny. They were completely wrong cause it turns out the portability was a huge selling point for the system but Americans are just allow to catch on to modern trends.
@christopherkelly5779 жыл бұрын
Because like with American snes, they thought the American and western markets would not like the original tiny and very Japanese styling and that being that small would somehow make it seem less powerful. So they made a new big ugly plastic case.
@CarbyGuuGuu7 жыл бұрын
Because Americans had that "bigger is better" mentality back then. But it still holds true to some consumers and manufacturers today. The original Xbox One model is an example of this.

I usually play RPGs for that system(on my emulator of course) such as Momotaro Densetsu Turbo/2/Gaiden.What's so special about MomoDen Turbo is that the game itself is a PCE adaptation of the game for the FamiCom(Japanese NES) and it had changed dramatically adding new contents(including new events, dungeons, enemies, even bosses) while other contents have been removed(headgear- and accessory-type equipments, some enemies and some events),some rewards and puzzles switch places and the final boss being made much harder(like 4000 HP).If you're up for a challenge, i recomend the PCE version.

I always felt so sad as a kid not to have the PC Engine and CD. But then I never bought the Turbo or it's CD attachment either! I tried to once, but the store employee told me I should just save my money and buy more SNES/Genesis games instead. That totally killed the sales pitch I had given my mom, and that was that.

Love the passion you have for the system! I really want to get one, but I've been told i will have issues using it here in the UK. Having it RGB modded seems to be the way to go. Also been told that i would have to use a Sega Megadrive power pack. Any tips would be greatly appreciated to help me get one for my collection!!
