I remember getting Sega Genesis in the Christmas of 1991. It was the only present for me and my sister. I was 9 years old and it came with the original Sonic the Hedgehog and I remember being enthralled by it. Green Hill Zone music is forever a nodtalgic staple in my childhood memories.

I think that no instruction booklets, the internet, all that stuff takes away a great part of the anticipation and immersion of games. Going on vacations back in those days, hoping to bring back a cool videogame, the rest of the vacation you would dissect the art, the box, the booklet, you don't really get that anymore.

RetroDeath Definitely, man. I've been guilty on on-line guides, and it cheapens it every time. Even the packaging back then gave each game more "weight."

Michael Ammons So did I, but back in the day instruction booklets most of the time had exclusive artwork and back stories you didn't get within the game. Obviously I didn't need to look up that A was jump and B was shoot.

RetroDeath Yeah and particularly japaese imports, we couldn't get a clue what was going on but the artwork was SO much better than what we had back home. I got the original megadrive and sonic in japanese, then dragon ball z games or final fantasy, the manuals were so fucking awesome, they had posters and stuff too.

I remember loving manuals a kid. I would read the story description, character bios, and just stare at the art. Getting a new game was a big deal. Like you said, it wasn't like we simply had a wall of games back then. Different times indeed.

Excellent episode! Getting brand new games back then was certainly a different experience than it is now. I still pull out my C64 monitor to play retro games. For some reason, that thing is still crystal clear and the best way to play my Saturn games :)

I totally agree that the manual, maps, etc that came with the games were a part of the experience. I remember getting Illusion of Gaia and just going nuts over the manual and chart it came with. So many RPGs back then had amazing art work and lore in the booklets that you just don't get anymore. Going online and reading up just isn't the same. It's one of the reasons I love the Genesis/SNES/PS1 era. Companies like Working Designs really nailed it with the packaging.

This is great you've mentioned these stories a lot before it's always fun to look back in the past and remember how gaming was back then. I live in France and somehow my experience was very similar to yours, except we were importing a lot more directly from japan. i think there was something special about growing up in the 80's and 90's that will never come back. You had to be there.

I had an "Andrew" growing up named Mike and his brother Dave. They had every game system known to man. In the mid 80's he had an Atari 800 computer w/disk drive and we played all kinds of games on that. Then NES came out, Sega Master System and so on... We've been gaming together since 1981 with Atari 2600 all the way to Sega Saturn and N64 in the late 90's.

Man I remember those times when games blew my mind and I miss them. The mid to late 80's will always hold a special place in my heart. I was also blessed to be that guy who had everything first and that sort of fed my need to get everything now :)

Andrew seems like a great guy, lol. And yeah Phantasy Star was very revolutionary for its time, the dungeons in particular were very smooth compared to other games of the time, even titles that were on pc platforms that were superior.

Lol I'm the same age so listening to your stories have a lot of similarities to me during the same years. I got my NES for Christmas 87, was playing Atari from 79/80 up until then, I thought I was a gamer but didn't realize just how insane I was for games until I got that NES. I never was much into Sega so to this day I have yet to play any of the Phantasy Stars, I really need to check them out soon. I tell you what though Final Fantasy & Dragon Warrior began me on the RPG's and once FFII & FFIII came out I was cemented into RPG's forever. The NES & SNES era was and will always be the best era. I look forward to many more video's, you guys tell great stories. Keep em coming.

I got started and amazed by video games during the early 80s. My mom, brother and I escape from VC and live in a refugee camp. I was 4 when I left VN and most kids in the camp have to entertain ourselves. We make stick gun where it literally shoot stick at the opponents. It hurts like a pellet gun. We make our own toys (sling shot, kite, plastic bag ball, jump rope, etc...). When I arrived to US, my second uncle introduced the Atari 2600. I was amazed and couldn't believe what I was looking at. I even was amazed by the cartoon back then. TV were for the rich back then and we have only outdoor theatre. I have never seen a TV in real life back then so it meant alot. The 2600 to me was amazing because I didn't know I can control an image on the screen. However, my first uncle who is older have a restriction rule. 1 hour on TV a weekday, 2 hours on weekend. He want us kids to do something else beside watching TV. Read, play, and study was how it is. Sometime, my brother and I try to cool off the TV with paper so he wont notice that the TV was on that long after he come home from work. Though I enjoy those moments but there were no freedom so my mom, brother and I move to a different location. However, my mom in US is poor and I understand that. I grew envious of kids having toys and games while I have to make toys. Everday after school, I grew fond of swimming and I couldn't demand toys from my mom. Even during refugee time, when I pass by a toy shop. I ask my mom for it but she explain that I can't have it because we don't have money. Before the refugee, my parents were rich and I know my older brother have nice clothes, toys and a servant. For me, I didn't have any of those things so it's a jealousy moment. When the NES came out, I save up $ to buy it.

You are right about the instructions manual, i remember looking at them before even popping my new game in the console. When i got my first 3DS game, i was baffled by why there was no manual inside. I wanted to call my game shop and report that i got screwed by one of their employees but luckily i went to the internet first to check if other gamers got the same deal and found out that that was the new standard in video games ...

Absolutely great memories. Back in the mid to late eighties I mostly played on various computers as well. TI99 4/a, Atari 8-bit computer, Commodore 64, Apple IIe. Oh the memories.
