Its interesting how many of these techniques are also found in long sword forms.

Yay!! All Eight pages! I honestly had no clue that you guys were just about to release this video when I sent you my private clip of Staff One. How ironic? I love Staff # 6. It was a little confusing to me at first. I agree 100% with your version of it, but I think the initial "Overrunning" strike from "Nebenhut" would start at a much farther distance. Big props to you guys and thanks for the shout out in the credits! ;-)

@colddrake80 The staves that we are using here are rather small, just over 4.5 feet and relatively thin. The originals would have been thicker, and we've found that once in motion it is very difficult to alter their course. Fighting with these is very different than fighting with a longsword!

Love this weapon! Its like a Long Baseball Bat. I think these techniques could be applied perfectly to the Spear-Club/Goedendag.

@Djemps We work the first three mainly, or more exactly, elements of them. I have adapted the elements to basic longsword as a set of exercises for beginners. We went thru the remainder a while ago, but stuck mainly with these three. Keep up the good work, guys. I like your stuff. It's inspiring and makes me want to work harder.

Great video! 1 thing:In the images of mairs p.staff, seems to me that in the guards the hands are wide in the grip(for solid parries)and in the end of strikes they are closer together(for mange range and power)that would be in accordance with the staff art I practice.Have you tried that?Your hands seem to be always fixed.I'm suggesting a strong grip with the back hand but sliding the front hand.It also helps to rotate the staff more fluidly taking advantage of the forward positioned weight.

I found this video very valuable. Bellow, I saw that the creators admit that the staves probably should have been heavier for accuracy. I understand that a choice was likely made for the sake of not killing one's friends. That said, the dearth of manuals and examples of how Impact weapons were used makes this video so nice to find. I've looked and what I can find all seem to say "use it as a long sword". No, it's different. The weight and balance are different. There are no handguards. And the buildup and maintenance of force are more important with impact weapons than blades.

However since very little is written about the use of the two handed club (which is fairly often shown in artwork), apart from Mair's techniques, we're left to interpretations based on other more "famous" weapons. Like the longsword, lucerne hammer, pole axe, and halberd. With a bit of personal touch, of course.

@SamGCampbell Well, the walking stick I use would be way to long for this sort of thing. I'm six feet and my digging stick/walking stick/spear[?] is about 7 feet long.

@MEMAG In that respect they remind me of tomahawks. They gain momentum fast and changing direction mid-strike is very hard.

@haffoc Hi Jay! I'm happy to hear that you and your group have been looking into PHM's Peasant Staff material. How long have you been doing it and what is the context? I'm curious to hear more opinions about the 'system' (if there truly is one) from people who have been experimenting with it as a group.

How long are these staffs? They strike me as rather unwieldy. Although connecting would be devastating due to there sheer mass and length. Were they used in dueling or simply as an on-hand personal defense weapon?

Thank you for sharing this video. Just one question if you don't mind : I have a walking stick which is really a 5 ft, 2.6lbs oak bo/staff. Would I be able to do the same technique with it as well? Thank you in advance!

I use one about the same length. Long-sword techniques will also mostly work.

I knew your video for a long time and used it as a stepping stone for my own interpretation of Paulus Hector Mair's Peasant Staff. Today I saw that Skallagrim did link to your video in one of his own (kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5zan3Wef8SEeK8).
