Daniel and mooch, I have a bit of a conundrum, and I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice. I have been into whisk(e)y for quite some time now. Fell in love with rye first, then bourbon, and then when I discovered malt whisky, things were never the same, and I am now a bonafide scotch lover. Throughout my journey, I had always been incredibly hesitant to try Islay. So many warnings from people to avoid peat, led me to find my wheelhouse in Highland malts, and not stray into smoke. Despite my love of tarry Lapsang Souchong tea, and rauchbier, the descriptors of "fish" and "seaweed" made me apprehensive. I found an empty bottle of Laphroaig the other day at work, and was excited to finally take a whiff. It blew my mind! Iodine and earth and smoke and camphor. I decided to take a "safe" plunge, and pick up a bottle of Bowmore 12 tonight. I was rather disappointed that I wasn't bombarded by tarry smoke and aggression, like I smelled in that Laphroaig. Would you say at this point, I should just dive straight into the deep end of Islay? The Bowmore just seems so tame and friendly, and I want some "wow" factor. I just haven't been sure if Islay would scare me away or not, so I've stuck with the likes of Oban 14 and Dalwhinnie. I would love to hear your advice, and any particular recommendations. For what it's worth, I took that empty bottle of Laphroaig home with me, and I have been abusing it with my nose. Cheers, Eric

I am usually on a hunt for a particular bottle when I walk in a shop and will walk out empty handed if I don't find it but.... on occasion I'll come across a rare find or something new that I've heard about and have been curious about it so I'll pick it up. The problem is I watch a TON of whisky tubers so I frequently hear about bottles that will go on my "I gotta get one of those!" list.

@@WhiskeyVault I think the irony is that the Cask Strength Peat Monster is one of the only cask strength scotches that come to mind that didn't gain anything new at the higher proof....it just tasted like Peat Monster with more proof.

Hi guys, I’m new to The Whisky Vault and was looking to buy a bottle Port Charlotte Heavily Peated. While at my local store I noticed they have two varieties of Heavily Peated, one with Scotch Barley and one Islay Barley. My question is how much of a difference if there between the two other than price, The Islay Barley being about 20 dollars more expensive. Which one would you recommend trying? Cool to see you guys are going back through some of the beautiful whiskies in old vids. To me, gems like peat monster, the regular spice tree, regular hedonism, the great king streets, even asyla are the compass boxes that really wow’ed me & opened my eyes to blended glory. They’re all really affordable & show off how great blending can result in magnificent whisky. The more-hyped releases, even though delicious, are freakin pricey & for $150-200+...they better be kind of amazing. For example, I actually like No Name a lot more than Peat Monster but it’s basically triple the price. I’m not sure I get triple the enjoyment even though I like it more. Plus the high price point & hype (ie hard to find-ness) puts me off from trying expressions I’ve never sampled before. Long story short, I think the “budget” compass box releases are the best of the bunch, all things considered.

Being from a highly regulated state, where the stores are owned by the state itself and the inventory is the same in almost every store, I often go hunting when traveling out of state for work. I know I can call ahead, but that would take away from the joy of the hunt. This leads to me leaving many stores empty handed, but the sheer ecstasy when finding a rare or hard to find whiskey is worth it.

I'm drinking peat monster right now. It's my first time trying it very sweet on the nose for me followed by earthyness. I'm still new to nosing etc I drink mostly islay anymore so I don't notice smoke on the nose but do in the taste

Hello Dan and Rex, somm and mooch! Compass Box is leading the way for transparency in whisk(e)y making! Will you guys be trying any of the new Mortlach lineup? I've tried the 16 and personally feel it's second only to Glenfarclas in terms of Speyside single malts! Also, Daniel can you recommend any good international whisky distributors? I'm an amateur reviewer from Canada and it can be hard to find certain vintages up here. PS. Comparison video between Aberlour 12 and Aberlour 12 Non-Chill Filtered? Rex would loooove a mooch of the Non-Chill Filtered version...

This might be a dumb question, but I’m having a hard time finding the answer. Since bourbon is a fairly new product compared to scotch, when did the regulations come about that say scotch must be aged in used barrels? My main question is, has scotch always been aged in used bourbon barrels, and if not, what did they use before bourbon was “a thing”?

There is no legal requirement for used barrels for scotch. It is fairly common simply because they preferred to use cask where the heavy impact of charring is more subdued. Prior to Prohibition wine barrels were the number one thing used by scotch distillers. When American whiskey started legally requiring new oak, cheap one time used barrels became easily accessible from the United States. That’s when they basically took over the Scottish industry for barrel aging.

Question. There's always discussion about cooling down whiskey. The effects on taste, aroma, experience, etcetera. However, what about the effects of heating up the whiskey, or putting the whiskey into a warm glass. Would this have the opposite effect of cooling it? Is there some good reason we don't commonly drink whiskey this way?

Prices are definitely regional. I grabbed a bottle of laphroaig 10 about a month ago for $70. I drove a hour away yesterday to see what total wine has to offer, and as I picked up a glenmorangie 18 for $100, I noticed laphroaig 10 for just over $30.

Last night my father and I placed the regular peat monster up against the Laphroaig Quarter Cask and in our opinion the Quarter Cask was a lot smokier. That said it was too smoky for him but perfect for my taste.

You're probably getting the mix of malts and percentages from Compass Box website but that has changed. I've contacted them a month ago and this is the reply: Laphroaig 34% Ledaig 6% Caol Ila 54% Ardmore 5% Highland malt blend 1% I've asked them "what's up with different percentages on website" they've said it's outdated info and it's about to be updated. You can contact them directly and you'll also get ages of every malt in there. 👍

Got some bad news today - Due to some questionable plumbing me and my dad while remodeling my basement, I now have 150-250 gallons of water spread out between 3 rooms in my basement. The whiskey is safe, but I now fear that the water is underneath the vinyl wood-floor boards of my whiskey vault and is soaking the book cases and book-case door that we installed last summer. Poor bastard didn't even make it a year.
