Director Helen Shaver needs to be given not only an Emmy but give her her choice of ANY future movie or tv show she wants to direct. It was such a brilliant move to have Sofia’s story start off in this bright and colorful charity event, then get darker and drained of color as they’re inside Arkham Asylum, and then have this gorgeous warm sunlight follow Sofia as she’s walking through the mansion past the bodies of all of her treacherous family. Honestly, if I were criminal in Gotham and I had heard Sophia‘s story about the truth of what happened to her, I would be as loyal as a samurai to her and cut down anyone who ever truly wronged her. All hail the Queenpin, Sofia Falcone!

Cristin Milioti just had a showcase of an episode on The Penguin. I mean-she’s been a powerhouse all season, but the latest episode showed off how game she is for the challenge and well-suited to playing Sofia is. She took us through a quick tour of the weak and vulnerable Sofia all the way to her transformation to the undisputed head of the Falcone crime family without one false note or wrong step into melodrama or haminess. This performance needs to be recognized come awards season.

Magpie (Margaret Pye) is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. She was created by John Byrne, and first appeared in The Man of Steel #3 (November 1986).[1] The character has been portrayed in live-action by Sarah Schenkkan in the final season of Gotham, Rachel Matthews in the first season of the Arrowverse series Batwoman, Marié Botha in The Penguin (TV series).

yellow is the color of insanity. i think that's why she wore a yellow dress, not for its association with friendship. The King In Yellow, The Yellow Wallpaper (which i think the yellow wallpaper in this episode was alluding to), Elden Ring's "Eye of Yelough", etc. yellow is constantly associated with madness, and after literally depicting trauma flashbacks with YELLOW WALLPAPER as the transition, she shows up to confront the people who locked her in a mental institution, claiming she was crazy, wearing a YELLOW dress. that's her embracing the crazy they forced on her.

@@blackmanwithcomputer Yep, and people keep forgetting that Oz has literally been constantly disrespected by every person hes been with even in his early days. Yes Oz is obviously bad, but through his POV, why would Oz be loyal or righteous to the same people who ridicule him everyday? It was much more logical for him to follow protocol and prove himself to Carmine. He just didn't anticipate how evil Carmine was.

I thought her dad was going to strangle her. They teased that but it never happened. He strangled Catwoman in the movie with a pool stick. I'm kind of glad they steered away from that and Carmine instead smartly (and I don't mean that in a good way) turned her in with overwhelming evidence that wasn't real. Then she came back and destroyed them. I only wish she could have confronted her father and taken him out. Or at least got him sent to prison. Because we are all on her team now. And after this is when I think Penguin will reach the villain status he has been creating for himself. We will see Oz completely destroy any goodwill he had and become something sinister. I already hated him for what he did to Selina Kyle and her mother, but now finding out that he was a serial killer who even murder his own wife, all in the same horrible way?! Is there anyway we can bring Carmine back to life just so Sofia can torture and murder him in the same way he killed those women? And speaking from experience, as someone who has been betrayed and abandoned by my own blood relatives just the way Sophia was, I absolutely understand where she’s coming from. And yeah, I would be walking with a skip in my step as well if I were her. But just like Sophia, I would spare my child second cousins. That was the first thing that crossed my mind was the only reason Penguin would ditch Sophia is if she found out about her brother. I was thinking the same thing when Sophia started bringing up her mom to her dad that something was off and that what made things go wrong for her. If Sophia hadn't been mean to Peguin in the car when he was concerned about her he might not have said anything to her father later. She kind of set her own self up for what happened with Arkham. If she had checked things out on her own and used people that were loyal to her and not her father things might have went differently. Everything she was doing was making things worse and worse for her. I knew every time she was getting a new setup in Arkham and was yelling at the screen "Don't do it, It's a setup" and she did it anyway. Killing Magpie because you got screwed over wasn't a good idea. You don't make moves like that unless you've planned out how to not get backlash on yourself. I would've kept my cool and not done anything that was going to get me in more trouble unless it was a life or death situation. Play it smart not like a dumbass. However, she got that payback so I was happy about that because her family did her completely dirty. This show really is great to watch and looking forward to the next one. Enjoyed the reaction 👍👍✌ out.

Saying the Penguin is the villain would mean that you think there is a Hero in the story when in reality there isn't. All the major caracters in the story (Vic, OZ, Sophia) have tragic pasts that molded or are currently molding them into power hungry monsters. Looking for either a better life, respect/admiration, vengence/control. It's a show about ONLY villains that are fighting each other to end up on top. No antivillain or Hero here.

As someone who's aunt was admitted into a psychiatric facility when I was like, 5, this episode was the hardest episode of television I have ever watched. And yes, shock therapy is still used because some people (such as my aunt) actually do need it as a way to help them. But it does horrible things to people who don't need it, as it does alter the way the brain is wired. My aunt in my memory is always the same but I recall a glimpse of what she was like before, she was alive and hyperactive, nothing like how she is today. Btw if you're wondering, she is fine now. She takes medication and is treated with a shrink but she is a functioning member of society by now. Just extremely different.

I loved this episode, but it also reminded me of a film I’d recently seen. It’s called ‘Ek Hasina Thi” and genuinely makes me want to see these incredible directors work together some day. (Jaby might recall the director of Ek Hasina Thi, since he directed Andhadhun as well)

14:42 I only heard of Magpie from the 3D animated Beware the Batman Batman about 10 years ago, when Alfred was bald and looking like Jason Statham. Batman's cowl never clicked with me, having the ears go somewhat sideways. She was also in Gotham and in Batwoman's first season.

That dress was specifically her embracing what happened to her. Definitely intentional that she let them see her scars, which she has been hiding before, at the last supper.

This episode was the most Gotham related episode of the season.. its one of those playback appreciated episodes.... I think it was the way Sofia dismissed Penguin when he tried to warn her was the tipping point..

Someone ratted her out before Oz. The only other person who knew she was asking strange questions was Alberto. Summer was dead the night Oz talked to Carmine and Sophia got arrested.

Was the Arkham doctor the same guy who was her therapist/doctor in one of the previous episodes?

Yes. The doctor she called after she escaped was the one with the red light. And the one more directly "treating" her in Arkham.

The reporter tells Sophia she “should be doing more”, like Bella Real said to Bruce in The Batman. “I think could be doing more ..” the parallels with Bruce and Sophia is staggering. But, like Sophia stated this ep, if you have a ween you are more likely to succeed. 😞

I was curious about why Sophia was in the yellow dress, like yes this was her moment of rebirth where she was flaunting the scares her family had given her, but I would’ve expected the dress to be a gold or a fire-y red and orange combo, but instead they choose yellow… a canary yellow like a canary in the coal mine, only this little canary survived😈 Question: I haven’t watched the latest Batman movie so I’m probably totally off, but are they setting up the therapist Julian as The Scarecrow?

They do shock treatment still, but apparently it's fringe and something that the patient needs to seek out because not many doctors still do it. They are not forcing it in hospitals or anything like they use to. I actually knew someone who got it to try and treat their depression about 10 years ago,

I was aware of Alberto Falcone due to the game Batman:Arkham Origins...as he was tied and bruised by The Penguin in it.. and Sofia due to Gotham series.. but after this ep, looked deeper in the comics.. Its right during Year Two Batman...that she is present the most. And how it all turned out..I read it all. Gotham and Comics did the same to close the chapter.. but this show is doing The Hangman part of the comics. ~she kills her brother as well..but anyways.

So much was revealed in this episode We find out What Oz did to betray Sofia And how she ended up in Arkham Asylum and how she got framed for the murders and got called the Hangman. No matter what Sofia does it's hard to hate her because you see what they did to this sweet girl and how they turned her into the person she is now.
