i have no idea other than straight up fear how anyone would buy that she killed those women. Her mom died when she was a child. Who thought she hung her mother? What relationship would she had with the random women that we're hung that her father wouldn't have a more obvious reationship. I needed more examples of Carmine's influence to buy that people instantly believed she had anything to do with those murders.

Man, episode 4 CAPTURED MY ATTENTION from beginning to end. This episode really sold me on the actress playing Sofia. We was taking the ride with her through the madness. I had to remind myself that "Batman" exists in this world. HBO is reminding us they specialize in world building. Salute to all the actors, writers and director of this show.

Have to agree with you. I recently rewatched last of us, and it's great. Some stellar episodes. But I felt it was missing something. I was a bit let down with some major moments from the games that didn't fully come off for me. But Penguin has just been brilliant every episode and had me hooked for every moment

This episode WATERED MY EYES BADLY. When little Sofia saw her deceased mom and then reached out to hold her hand trying to wake her up. BOY that really got me. I couldn't imagine an experience like that. Then we watched how she was getting screwed left and right and she again reached out for help from the doctor before they continued to fry her brain. Director Helen Shaver needs to be given not only an Emmy but give her her choice of ANY future movie or tv show she wants to direct. It was such a brilliant move to have Sofia’s story start off in this bright and colorful charity event, then get darker and drained of color as they’re inside Arkham Asylum, and then have this gorgeous warm sunlight follow Sofia as she’s walking through the mansion past the bodies of all of her treacherous family.

This episode makes Carmine Falcone the most despicable man in Gotham before his Death. The man not only Killed Thomas Wayne, but he took Renewal and held the entire city in his pocket. His wife most likely caught wind of it and his affair with another woman thus giving birth to Selina Kyle and he killed her as well as Selina’s mother. Then he was so depraved he framed his own daughter for murder and out her in Arkham for 10 years. Carmine deserved to die, because he made Monsters due to his own actions.

I’m amazed at the shows ability to almost shift in tone and genre every episode whilst still building on the last and maintains an overall aesthetic and vibe. The perspective switches between Oswald, Vic and Sophia make it feel so different when we see the same events and city in the eyes of a different person. We also got to see a really earnest and sad depiction of a ‘one bad day’ scenario that so many Batman villians are famous for with Sophia in a way that felt real. Honestly masterfully done TV

I typically view flashback episodes in most shows as pointless filler. But I feel this one actually did a great job in filling in the blanks and answering questions that many viewers have been wondering about. While also introducing familiar characters which should become even more relevant as the season progresses. I was intrigued the entire time and never felt bored throughout. Collin Farrell will surely be up for many acting nominations when it's all said and done. But I also believe Cristin Milioti deserves to be in that conversation as well after that incredible performance.

Sofia has a pretty classic Batman villain origin. Half of Batman's villains only became villains because they were screwed over by someone else. Look at Batman: TAS. When Matt Hagen was introduced, he was impersonating rich businessmen to backmail them, but then it's revealed that he was in an accident that disfigured him so he became addicted to a face cream that can restore his normal appearance and then the maker of the cream used it to force him to impersonate people and get blackmail material on them. Same with Mr. Freeze, when he appeared, he was a ruthless thief who left his own henchman to die, but then it turned out that he was using his employer's cryogenic equipment to save his sick wife but then his employer showed up to shut things down and caused an accident that made him unable to feel emotions or survive at above freezing temperatures.

The writing, the visual story telling, Helen Shaver's seamless direction and Cristin Miloti so delivering the goods in an epic performance that flipped the script and re-contextualized the previous 3 eps. WOW!!.. Side bar: beginning Nov 14th, we're getting more of Mark Strong as he portrays 'Emperor Javico Corrino' in "Dune: Prophecy", coincidentally also on Max (and Crave in Canada).

Selina is Sofias half sister - and in the movie Carmine tries to strangle her and he says thats how he killed Selina’s mom. I didn’t even realize this till after the credits rolled. Amazing writing.

The scene where she 1st goes into Arkham and gets showered, scraped, etc. Was so troubling. And thats what good art does. It makes you react. It wasnt gratuitous or over the top, but it was scary. And the actor who playes Sophia is friggin fantastic. She doesnt do, what I feel alot of actors do in these shows, she doesnt over act. I thought Magpie overacted a tad bit. But even when they gave her that fork and forced her to fight, she acted it so damn well. She better win an emmy for this role, cuz she is the best I've seen on TV in a long time.

Selina is several years younger than Sofia, so what if Carmine killed his wife after she found out about the affair with Selina's mother and perhaps the pregnancy as well(the timeline works)? And don't forget that he also killed both Selina's mom and her friend. This guy was using his position as a powerful mob boss to hide his other identity as one of Gotham's most prolific serial killers. Imagine John Gotti and Ted Bundy as the same dude

Not to say others won't show up later on, maybe with Batman 2 or after, Black Mask comes to mind, if they want to keep this gang/crime style thing going. I said the same thing on an another breakdown video of the episode and I’m surprised people haven’t caught on to it. I DO think Carmine killed his wife but I think the serial killer is Alberto. I think he has more of a guilty conscious from his dad putting the blame on his sister for something he did. As to why he is murdering them, I think he took the trauma of his mother’s death in a very different direction. Carmine is a murderer but not the type to do it without “reason” I think it’s always self serving and to preserve his reign. What does he have to gain by killing prostitutes? Something I could definitely see Alberto doing.
