Selah Romans 13:27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen./Inspiration+What Jesus Christ did through his death on the cross and his resurrection is something that humans cannot understand. Only God has the wisdom to understand. Yet, it is through our faith that this is real and true that we are saved. The crux of our salvation lies in believing in something only God truly knows. The glory of this mystery will be revealed to us in eternity. /Prayer+ Dear God, your works are too amazing to comprehend. As humans, our earthly wisdom is not enough to understand Jesus’ death and resurrection, but I believe it is true. As creator of the universe, I know you can do far more than I can imagine. Your ways are not like out ways. While I am living in my earthly home, give me the wisdom I need to share my faith with others in a way that they will understand. In Jesus’ name, amen.

one thing they never cleared up, the weight of a US penny changed in the middle of 1982, when they changed its composition from bronze to copper plated zinc. new pennies weigh 2.5g, and ones made from 90% copper (1865?-1982) weigh 3.1g. This changes the terminal velocity of a penny.

I loved this myth but it might have made a difference if they used full copper penny's instead of the zinc filled ones the are used in modern times as it would have added extra weight and copper is a harder metal then zinc it probably wouldn't have stuck into concrete but would have been more likely to crack the skull
@rogersartandsolutions5074

It wouldn't have changed the terminal velocity enough to make a big difference. You also have to take into account that pennies tumble when they fall so that change in mass would be mitigated even further.

wow 3000 ft/s is a high velocity. That's like high power rifle lightweight bullet territory, not merely "firearm speed". Granted even lighter bullets have many many times more mass than this penny, so that's like 10-20x less energy with this penny. I haven't looked at any tables nor done any number inputting (just head math), but I think this would put the total kinetic energy maybe around or above a .22 non-LR, maybe even close to a .22 LR?

Not going to say that a penny going 64.4 mph won't hurt but when you play paintball the guns are or when I played were calibrated to shoot a 68 cal ball at 300 ft per second or 204.5454545455 mph A penny traveling 64.4 mph converted ft per second is 94.4533333333. The penny weighs less than a 68 cal paintball and is traveling at 0.314844444333333333 % of the speed of a paintball. So while the difference in solidity of the penny vs the softness of a paintball, I conjecture that the pain felt from either would be relatively the same.

Wrong!!! Wrong!!! Wrong!!! If you have ever read a box of bullets you would most likely have seen the letters fps. This stands for feet per second. The lethality of all bullets are measured and compared by weight and speed. 5.56 cartridge is a .22 cal bullet commonly shot using a ar15. This bullet on average travels about 2300 fps and does a considerable amount of damage despite it's size and that's because of speed. Obviously the faster a heavy object can go the more deadly it is. But when we are talking about something like a penny traveling 3000 fps, that's very impressive. If you roll a penny up it is somewhat close to the size of a .22 long rifle bullet. Not very big. But that's where speed comes in to play. The faster a object travels, the more kinetic energy it has. I'm blabbing on, basically a penny traveling 3000 fps is more deadly than a 5.56 traveling 2300 fps. Keep in mind, air soft guns that are sold at Walmart, shoot pellets at 1400 fps are are legal to hunt deer with. Like this comment if any of this of what I've said makes sense to you.

They should have used both a copper and zinc penny to see the difference, the copper weighs more than the zinc.

Its penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar (50 cent piece), dollar... But we almost never actually use half-dollar or dollar coins.

Broken Wave to be fair we never really use pennies either, occaisonally a dime or nickel but mostly just dollars and quarters

peoples dont trow peoples to kill peoples - it is just fun - when i was kid and i was visiting some high towers/lanterns etc. with my parents i often used to trow pennies/rocks to check for how long i can see them, how will they fall etc. +even if they dont kill someone that must be painfull to get hit by penny, if is painfull even if someone trow it at you (know this feeling thx to my classmates)

No way that was 3000 feet per second. That’s gotta be a miscalculation. That penny would disintegrated on impact. That’s 5.56 velocity.

According to Title 18, Chapter 17 of the U.S. Code, which sets out crimes related to coins and currency, anyone who “alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens” coins can face fines or prison time. If its for science, its ok to break the law.

A penny at 64mph is going 93 feet per sec a .22 long rifle does 1,400 to 1,800 feet per sec so you'd have a better chance at dying to a .22 rather than a penny from the top of a skyscraper
