This is my first video about something not related to Megaten. I don't plan to change my content, this was just a little experiment I did for Halloween (I was a bit late). Next video will be Last Bible 3, I'm wrapping up the scripting right now. Hopefully you enjoy this little change of pace - feel free to suggest other games you'd like me to cover if you did - and check out the description for a link to play this game.

The suicide not happening because you distract her is absolutely how it works. Suicide is typically an action that you build up to, and with regards to depression, having anything at all that tears you away from the crushing reality (such as needing to get an item back) takes some of the pressure off. Additionally, it can be assumed that the person in that picture is her dead brother, which would build her commitment, because if she believes in an afterlife, she’d be able to see him again, and if she doesn’t, she’d take comfort in knowing that she doesn’t need to suffer any longer.

To save the overweight guy (Mitsuru), you need to use Push on the gas chamber door to get back on the other side, to find him laying on the ground. To save Sae, you need to use the log from earlier before engaging in the fight to save her from a falling ceiling. To save Mizumi (why would you?), you have to go to where he took the picture (in front of the Hathor statue in the hallway) and look up. There's a female monster in the middle of capturing Mizumi that you must defeat.

OK the only thing that you missed was the whole situation with Mitsuru Koeiji. The whole point of his character is kinda a statement about unliked characters. None of the party notices that he goes missing right after you pass through the Gas room, but because most people wouldn't use him, they won't notice he is gone until right at the end. That is why the foot stepping on him is low-key terrible. If you save him, he remarks about how nobody usually likes him or notices him. Pretty sad stuff.

The core idea of ‘no punches pulled’ is what RPG maker games so important, and so interesting Even more so than regular games, they’re like a look into someone else’s psyche, and when that reveals their deepest fears, you get the most visceral horror games you could find

You can save Mizumi the journalist by standing in front of the female statue in the picture and using the "look up" ability (the other statues are all male). You find him being hanged and then you have to fight a naked woman monster that he's implied to have also tried to force himself on not realizing it was a monster. Mizumi mostly seems intended to fill the role of the token unsympathetic characters you see in lots of horror movies, which I thought was a pretty interesting dynamic for a potential permanent party member even if it means Mizumi isn't a very complex character. When the creator of the game talks about "doing things you can't get away with in a commercial game" having a playable character like Mizumi with no real identifiable characteristics other than "is a creep" had to be one of those things he was talking about when he said that. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but I loved the boldness of it either way. I have also used all the party members in battle so I can say that Mizumi is also one of the stronger party members from a gameplay standpoint, although the game is really easy so unless you are using Sae or Saori who both kind of suck the party members don't matter much. One of his attacks is called "binding" which has some pretty nasty implications. Also Mitsuru the fat guy has a special move called "fart" that inflicts the choking status. Experimenting with the ridiculous special attacks was the best part of the combat for me. Really carried the simplistic combat for me, which sounds kind of weak but since the game is only like 3 hours long I think it's good enough.

Feels bad, I also couldn't save Sae, but managed to save Mizumi. If you save him, he gets off totally scot-free at the end of the game too. I honestly like that saving him doesn't make him reflect on his ways and improve or anything. If one were to try to go for the "best" outcome, it can be argued that it's better to just let him die, and that's pretty interesting cause usually saving everyone you can is pretty much always best.

The opening segment is spot-on as the introduction for this game. And don't worry man, most of us probably gave RPGmaker a try as well, it's been a thing since its existence. Even famous mangaka gave it a go to make RPGs of their manga or at least made valiant tries about it, everyone has a story to share. Though when it comes "hit" RPGmaker games, I think the earlier ones, doesn't matter if they were japanese or western, are the best because everything after a certain point in time, maybe 2006 with the rise of other design platforms that lead to the explosive rise of the japanese indie scene for a short while, it seems like the people who make RPGmaker games and RPGmaker horror stories just want to copy Kedouin's Corspe Party and Kikiyama's Yume Nikki or just Earthbound because fuck it I guess, gotta copy these but let's be a bit pretentious on top of it. Meanwhile, the early works of Kedouin and especially this game came from an era where it was common for the Sega Saturn and Sega 32X to have sex, naked boobs and gore in their games, it was common for the PC engine to have porn games that were extremely hardcore back in the day, one of them being Kedouin's inspiration for Corspe Party in the first place and he pushed that envelope even further. And here comes "Makoto Serise", probably naming himself after his favourite Fire Emblem character and making an actually good RPG horror game with scares and scenes that really couldn't be found in mainstream games at the time and Illusion wasn't ready at the time to shock the world with their games, so his contribution shouldn't be underestimated in the japanese independent space. The idea of using the journey to the egyptian underworld and the guilt trip of the characters you failed to save as a player as last-minute bosses and how horrifying it is to trudge along, is quite something wherein if it was made today we'd end up with something far inferior than this version, sadly. All of that, alongside a very decent battle system for an indie game at the time and in a stage of the RPGmaker program that was unwieldy to most people that didn't study programming or if they didn't take up gaming creation as a hobby or as a way to pay bills, which was surprisingly the way a lot of the japanese industries veterans begun, by doing a work they never had any sort of diploma or PhD for and instead using their knowledge of their actual occupations and passions to make games. Makoto seems to fall into that category, at least by eyeballing his game, since it carries the same air as Yuji Horii's early games, back when he was studying for literature school or Kojima's short stories and programming goofs while he was in the economics university, before enrolling into Konami. And the art is great, the PC-88 and PC-98 had such an amazing toolkit for making pixelated art and despite it being amateurish compared to the composite shot-esque images that artists made around that time for their games, Makoto's work is still extremely good for an amateur, especially for someone who claims to have made the game in a year and a half. Far above the competition in all of the fields. I also like how the characters have subtle nods to other horror characters or horror/monster themed characters, like Ushio and Tora's girls in Nogisaka and Ichikawa. And that's it for the main takeaway on the game, sorry it got so long winded again, haha. The rest are just general notes and ramblings about the video : Tsuchida's rant on the archeological comitee ringing true even to this day is sad. And horrifying, probably more than anything else in the entire game. Him also giving some big Goldsmith vibes is hilarious, I wonder if Ryukishi7 played the game and based Kinzo a little bit on Tsuchida instead of the random gundam villains. As for the pyramids, they are surprisingly much cleaner than people expect, speaking from experience. Giza's also a lot less slimy or wet despite the chilliness and humidity it has. It's also nice how Makoto did some research on the area and finds fun ways to connect the rivers around the Giza pyramid area, even making up underground lakes in spots that it would make sense for them to be there. 13:27 : Hey now, going by 90s anime tropes, that backwards baseball- sorry, I meant to say "yakyuu" - cap gives Ayuto some bick dick shounen chad MC energy and a free ticket to cameo in Konami's baseball all-stars. 23:31 : Breast Fire is an attack done by the Mazinger series of robots made by Go Nagai, who is also a very prolific horror and erotica writter. And Hino is based on one of his Violence Jack survivor characters. Mazinger in general is very popular amongst kids in Japan, even SMT has some references to it. The whole game in fact is very much close to his horror style, where insane slapstick happens before the imminent horror hits, a style of horror that was popularized by Shigeru Mizuki's Gegege no Kitaro, a manga that influenced how Nagai would handle levity in his horror works. This style is also found in Yugioh's very early chapters, where the horrors the Pharaoh unleashes on his victims are undercut by school hijinks and extremely percy antiques by the lads before some psychotic killer is set on fire by his own gun in front of a 2500 year old pharaoh. 28:30 : HA! Nice Indiana and the Holy Grail reference. Though it's also a very nice egyptial lore reference, given how people were judged in the world of the dead. 36:20 : Nice subtle hint that Sae is from Okinawa...not that her complexion alone wasn't a dead ringer for it, or her exotic name but the general quasi-karate / ryukyu martial arts reference helps. 49:46 : That was honestly my favourite part of the whole game, that batshit creativity that was ushered here for the game, that ties so perfectly to egyptian myth, pharaoh lore and all that was just excellent. The whole thing about how pharaohs are gods on earth, how they actually are preserved eternally compared to the mortals and so on. Beautiful. 51:32 : Even if Serise or Mizuho had any connection to the tourists, they probably were influenced due to how tragic the whole event was, at least for the japanese side. It has to do with their culture etc. etc. Sadly, the Luxor massacre may have been huge for Japan at the time, having unsuspecting tourists killed through such an attack but for most people in Egypt it was just one of "those" days sadly. I remember when the local news talked about the event and the adults just didn't even have any reaction to it, anymore.

For the sake of spoilers, but from what I remember: (Edit: Forgot Sae!) You can save the fat dude by heading back before going down the stairs. You can save Saori by keeping her picture. You can save Sae by using the plank before engaging in the Restrainer fight. (Yes, the plank you see right after escaping the Toxic Gas trap chamber.) You can save Jeepers Creepers by examining the female horned statue and looking up. The professor and Kuroe cannot be saved. Still, you kind of get a "good" ending by saving Nei and Yoko, so all's well ends well. Right?

I discovered RPG Maker horror games a few years before they all just started being ported over to systems. One of my favorite creators had the handle Housekeeping on the forums, he recently released his first commercial game, Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass which is a criminally underrated Earthbound homage.

So Rin's death... You really dodged a bullet there, that one is one of the most brutal in the game. She may be a jerk, but she does not deserve to go out like that. To save Sae, you need to prop up the ceiling first before attacking the Restrainer. Something funny: If you save Mizumi (why would you), he immediately starts begging Ayuto to go back to the pyramid with him at the ending. Ayuto appropriately responds by slamming the door shut.

Nei has a lot of good abilities when leveled up so it might’ve been a good idea to train her. She can buff your strength stats with a move called rock music, and heal with another move called classical music. Mizumi is a great character in battle too. His abilities include using his camera to lower accuaracy, he learns a rope move when leveled up to a certain level to bind the opponent and prevent it from attacking, and his final learned move is a knife attack which I think kills the opponent in 1 hit (same as Kyosuke’s baseball bat ability). Also, the geckos in the pharaoh’s tomb are probably the best ways to train your underleveled characters as they give out 100 exp after being defeated. However, they are difficult as hell to beat having lots of Hp and strong attacks, but totally worth it.

"Breast Fire" is (one of) the signature attack(s) of Mazinger Z, an anime icon. Given Ayuto's age and when this is set, he (and likely the author) would have grown up watching it. The robot has giant red breastplates that act as heat sinks and can project a massive heat beam, and that's the attack name.

Sayori is probably going to commit suicide no matter what you do. She was suicidal before the events of the game and I don’t see how even the happiest ending would change her life. I consider a coincidental death for anyone who lost her in their play-through.

I've been in the RPG Maker community since 2006. I've never even heard of this. Kind of crazy how some stuff can just slip under the radar. I really like this little game, it's short enough to encourage replaying multiple times to see if you can save more people. It reminds me a little bit of a horror movie called As Above So Below, where a bunch of people go into old catacombs and are punished for their crimes/guilt. I think I would have liked this game a bit more if the deaths of these characters had more to do with their "crimes." Can't complain too much though, it's a pretty neat game and the graphics are awesome. Something about a limited color palette and the dithering is just really spooky.

Not sure if anyone has commented about this yet but the game really gives me the same vibe as Sweet Home on the NES. A group of people stuck on one place full of traps where almost everyone is playable and can killed. However Sweet Home is less forgiving since whenever someone dies, they stay dead for the rest of the game. Both are pretty similarly with how there is a lot of puzzle solving, some of these even being able to kill your partners, making the game more dificult. I would love to see you give it a try one day since you loved this one so much. I surely will give Peret em Heru a try, curious to see how my playthrough will end. Cheers Marsh, was another great video!
