This entire discussion almost perfectly describes why I landed on my current arrow set up to a "T". I've been hunting PNW Blacktails since about 1993. Turned to bow hunting in 2005 and down the rabbit hole I went. In the beginning it was 380gr arrows because I wanted them fast but the hunting results had some WTF moments to say the least. Plus I had no idea what I was doing and usually just blamed the broadhead I was using for the poor penetration. Mind you, I'm a 30" draw on a 74# bow. Fast forward to 2012, I worked up to a 460gr arrow and without a doubt saw the improved penetration on deer. Pass throughs became a little more common. I stayed in that 460-480gr range for several years and was fairly successful. Finally in 2020 I made a leap to a 540gr 17%FOC arrow and WOW! I'm absolutely crushing everything I hit, I'm confident a pass through on a mature buck is guarantee no matter what. It is now routine to aim for that vital V straight up from the leg and I know it's going to be a pass through. I've chopped the opposite leg bone in half on a quartering away from a treestand and still stuck the arrow in the dirt.

Good video! I use a 4 fletch configuration with a fixed blade broadhead. It’s really personal preference at the end of the day.

Great conversation, the foc discussion, and fletching sizes are all talked about by Dr. Ashby in his research. Ranch fairy makes it easier to understand. High foc up front, smaller fletching is needed. I’m shooting 675 grains, BE Carnivore 250’s, 23% foc, and using the flex fletch ffp 150 target vanes. Roughly 3 grains each. I typically only shoot out to 60, but they are great to that. I know you guys like to reach out so much further, so I see the lighter, but still heavy weight setups. What it all comes down to on the weight side is, “What works for you”. And that is what Ashby promotes as well, what trajectory you can live with. Once again, great content.

What is your arrow speed, I like the idea of heavy arrow builds. But the risk of wounding or the animal dodging the arrow is much higher vs a lighter but fast arrow.

@@Aerosithabout 250, but here is what I have noticed. My bow is silent, and last year, I had an opportunity at 3 does within 25yds. I was having peep and eye issues, so I missed, deer did not even flinch when the shot took place, one looked at where the arrow hit, but they just kept browsing, I was able to try a 2nd shot, and went over the ones back, reloaded a third, but decided it needed to figure out what was wrong so I let back down. Wisconsin white tails, heavily hunted area, usually very spooky, but not an issues with the heavier weights. Hoyt vector 35, LH, 67lbs.

These have been super fun to listen to and a ton of great info. While I don't agree 100%, i love listening to other guys takes on all things archery! I love to tinker and play with different setups and this gives me ideas for more of that. The gritty podcast is one of my very favorite to listen to, but Brad, brother you gotta quit cutting people off and talking over them. Please don't get me wrong, and don't take it in a bad way, I love listening to your opinion and you are a great co-host to have on this podcast. It's just hard to to listen to sometimes. I know it gets exciting and you wanna add to the conversation, but I wanna hear both opinions, yours and theirs. I use to have the same issue until my wife pointed it out and now I catch myself all the time. Again, great podcast guys! Love the info!

i use shoot a 20% foc with four fletching, ive done 50-60yd shots in a 20+mph cross wind, interestingly enough ive noticed the wind would catch the fletching pushing the rear of the arrow in the direction of the wind... somewhat stearing the arrow the opposit direction, causing the arrow to hit 5-6" into the wind direction

FOC? Anyone ever throw a dart? Teaching physics I have students throw straws with clay on them. They start with 1/2 on each end, and see how far they can throw their dart. Then they get to adapt. The majority of the clay ends up front every time. Helical? Anyone ever throw a football?

Jeremiah, what is your recommended arrow configuration/build for someone with a 26.5" draw weight, 65lb draw weight, hunting deer and elk? Brian and Brad, are you using Jaggers for your primary broadhead and using the Deathswitch as a backup/follow-up in your quiver? I have been testing the Halo nocks on my .166 arrows and been happy thus far. I like their simplicity and their lightweight. What has been your feedback on them?
@GrittyGearAndPodcast
@GrittyGearAndPodcast 11 ай бұрын
We just set Chiam up who is about the exact same draw length and weight. I would recommend an arrow like the Gold Tip Hunter XT in a 340 or even a 300 spine with a 125gr head. This should get you shooting around 265fps and have around a 430gr arrow that gives you good FOC and will have great penetrating power. Brad is running a 125gr Annihilator broadhead and I will mostlly be running a 200gr Deathswitch and I will have Jaggers as my backup. I think I will have the Jaggers as my primary if I decide to hunt moose with the bow. Brad has been using the Halo nocks and is going back to the Firenocks. He is pulling 78lbs with a 30" draw and shooting 518gr arrows at 289fps and the halo nocks can't handle it. They give too much causing the arrow to be very inconsistent. I think for your setup they would work great.

One thing that I left out, Chiam’s arrows have added weights in the tip as well. Without the weight, that arrow is about 10 grains lighter I believe.

I am a fan of ranch fairy. I'm not saying he is the end all but I do feel people don't watch all the videos on the arrow builds or the 12 factors. Total arrow weight is actually far down on the list.

Unpopular opinion: I think the blood eagles are better than the Jagger broadheads. I find my blood eagles are more durable when I shoot through a target than the jaggers. It might be the heat treat, it might be the grade of S7 (not all steel mills are equal) but they aren't the same.

QUESTION!!! I’ve wondered why multi-pin setups don’t follow a nice clean parabolic trajectory. The pin gaps don’t follow a smooth progressive change. Is this because of the time it takes the arrow to “recover?”
@jackbuendgen389
@jackbuendgen389 11 ай бұрын
The gaps in your pins will get larger as the distance increases because of drag. Your arrow should "recover" within 20 yards, more with an untuned bow, less with a tuned bow.
@YoureSoVane
@YoureSoVane 11 ай бұрын
Because skin friction and aerodynamic drag slow down the arrow over time. Gravity alone would create a parabolic path, but the speed of the arrow is always changing.

@@zakarybarclay999 He did a step one video. Between ranch fairy and another guy who's on the other end of the spectrum, there is no proper use of the Doppler and its capabilities. So I bought my own and I'm doing my own testing. There's more to the story and it's not as simple as ranch fairy or anyone else describes. Below a certain speed, assuming a given diameter and form factor, skin friction is the majority of your drag. Above a certain speed, it's frontal area and form factor. Determining or estimating that speed matters.
