Great video. I have often thought a vertical design could be the most versatile if done correctly. I have had a design in my head similar to this for years. Being in the middle east without my tools and a shop prevented me from making one. This one looks like it tiks all the boxes. I think there needs to be a little more distance between the grill height and fire to do a low and slow smoke. I wonder if you can keep the temps in the low 200 range. Also, it should have an ash pan. Looks like cleaning will be a pain. Maybe, the door should be wider or on the side. Other than that, its the best looking one I have seen. Cant wait to see you run it through it's paces and see what it can do. This can even act like a Santa Maria grill. Nice job by Lone Star from a town where I used to live.

Best Father's Day present was seeing you got an El Patron 😊. Mine was delivered 3 weeks ago (Ordered Jan 8, 2024). I've got a seasoning and 2 cooks under my belt. Looking forward to upcoming El Patron videos from your channel. My only issue is the adjustable grate does not raise as high as 5" from the cooking grate due to the cable loop and the quick link attachment.
@BallisticBBQ7 ай бұрын
I'm wondering if that could be fixed with a smaller cable collar? Thanks for the info!
@wcneathery31007 ай бұрын
@@BallisticBBQ Yeah I looked at smaller quick links and that doesn't seem to solve the issue. Maybe a small chain link, then you loose the ability quickly detach. Maybe Chris will see this and come up with a solution. Mine tops out at 8.5 inches.
@waldo14936 ай бұрын
@@BallisticBBQI’ve had my el patron since mid May and upgraded the cable system. I used stainless cable and eliminated the factory cable loop by looping the new cable directly to the quick link attachment. It gained me another 1-1/2” closer to the cooking grates. Not sure if it makes that much of a difference but it can be done.

That's a great question, but a difficult one to answer. I love the Argentine grill, simply because it is so primal and so immersive. I love this cooker because it pretty much does everything... If I got rid of all of my other cookers, I'd still be able to grill like a Santa Maria, go low n slow like my offset, cook Kamado style and rotisserie cook. I'm still getting to know this cooker however, so I'm not ready to sell off my other cookers!

Jack of all trades is a master of none. It's a universal rule of design: compared to a design that does a single thing and does it well, a multifunctional system must have design compromises to achieve acceptable results for all requirements. Example: It's hard to beat a Weber kettle for grilling and smoking, and it's so simple!
@1nteract1ve6 ай бұрын
That’s true but some folks don’t need to be the best. They want to experiment with various cooking styles and don’t have the money or the space to buy a smoker, grill, pizza oven, etc. I wouldn’t buy this thing but I can see why some folks would.
@Gruuvin16 ай бұрын
I have an uni pizza oven, and have used it many times, and what I've learned is that it performs terribly compared to a large brick oven. But your average home oven can make a pretty good pizza but it's MUCH more practical. A Weber kettle grill is $90. I'm not sure what you mean about "some people don't have the money". This El Patron is $2,000. So you can buy a grill, smoker, and a pizza oven for less than this thing!

I just did my first longer cook the other day (video Sunday). This was only my third cook, so it was more of an experiment/learning opportunity for me. I'm very confident that I will be able to cook a good brisket now. It held very stable temps throughout the entire cook.

Do wireless thermometers like the meater work with thhis Grill? I'd think it would be a Faraday's cage and not let any signal trough which could be annoying.
@BallisticBBQ7 ай бұрын
They do work in this (and all of my other pits) including my larger smoker made from 1/4" steel. A Faraday cage requires continuous conductivity and the door being painted and sealed where contact is made with the rest of the cooking chamber breaks the conductivity.

Also, it has to have electricity for the fan, but I've got my drum smoker and offset smoker/grill for those emergencies. I might have purchased this had I seen it before I saw the gravity grills though, as you can add the fan and other electronics to it still.

@BallisticBBQ7 ай бұрын
Well, I love the good old Weber Kettle, but really apples to oranges here. It can do a lot, but as soon as you set it up for low n slow, you lose half of your cooking surface. Instead of being able to raise and lower the charcoal grate, you need to set up two zones, again losing half of your cooking surface. This being said, I truly love kettle grills, and for those on a budget, they are hard to beat.

You open the door and scoop it out with a dust pan or a shop vac. This was brand-spanking new when I shot this. But seeing that you add the fuel via the large door on the front, I guess I assumed it was obvious. I've cleaned it twice since I shot this video, and it was very simple.

@BallisticBBQ6 ай бұрын
Great comment. Cleaning this cooker is exactly like cleaning a Santa Maria grill. On this cook, I was using a water pan, so the drippings splashed into the pan. If not using a pan, the drippings would have dropped onto the charcoal grate, which was being used as a defuser. the drippings would have cooked on the defuser, and a wire brush our scraper would clean it off with no problem. If I was truly cooking over direct heat with the charcoal/wood on the fire brick at the bottom of the pit, the drippings would vaporize, seasoning the meat, just like a Santa Maria. As far as cleaning the ash, you open the firebox door and one of those large shop sized dust pans fit inside easily. Just brush the ash into the pan and dump, or use a shop vac. It's not difficult. The Huntsman looks pretty cool and seems like a good price. Not sure it's an apples to apples comparison, however. Thanks, Joe!
