I have the built-in version of this cooker and absolutely love it. Easily my favorite of all my outdoor cookers. I've gotten to where I'm using this for 70%-80% of my cooks now. It has completely replaced all of my charcoal cookers (Weber Kettle, WSM, Pit Barrel). I'm in the process of cleaning those up and moving them to storage. This grill does everything they do just as well or better and has a ton more space to do it. I have some tips/ideas for you but I'm looking forward to seeing what you throw at this first.

I have had this exact cooker for a couple years and like you said it is very well made. There is a lot of learning curve with using this thing in its various functions. It's unique design means it doesn't necessarily do a great job at any of its various capabilities. If you have a variety of cookers, this one probably wouldn't get used very often. As an example, I have tried using it as an offset to cook a pork butt but wasn't that satisfied with the results. The butt needs to be on the bottom grate (top is way too hot), and fire management is very tricky if you are used to using a normal offset. Damper tweaking is essential to get consistent temps and it's not forgiving. Because of the proximity of the cooking area to the firebox, you can only use small splits, which burn quickly so you'll be feeding it constantly. It is easy to spike the temps. Also, because the exhaust is at the top of the hood, the smoke isn't channeled to where the meat is like a smoke collector on an offset. It's hard to get decent smoke on a butt in this configuration inmo. It's a very nice cooker that is useful but it's not a miracle setup. I love LSG, though, and have several of them.

Thanks for the comment. I'm looking forward to putting this to the test soon. I did a big rack of beef back ribs over low-direct heat the nigh I shot this video and they turned out amazing. We'll see how it works as an offset.
@SilatShooterАй бұрын
Thanks for your integrity in your comment. I immediately wondered if this would work as an offset due to the exact points you made. Like the separate fire boxes for grilling steaks one side and more delicate proteins on the other. Looks well made for sure. But like most things that try to be a jack of all trades, it's usually a master of none. Don't get me wrong, I like it, just not as a smoker.

@charlesschwartz3445Ай бұрын
I have this grill. The best single steak I make I cook on this grill. I put 3 inch bone in ribeyes on the left chamber without any fire below. I put the heat source in the other chamber, making the grill an efficient and easy to use offset. I cook the ribeyes to 120 degrees. Then, I move the coals on the right side to high and literally finish the steaks to 130 degrees in the flames. I rest the steaks and then cut and serve. Best steaks I grill and I grill a lot of steaks.

@lynncox760Ай бұрын
Bang on correct Dave. I personally would get it raging hot to around 500f for about an hour minimum then let it cool. Then apply a high temp oil to the internals and wipe off any excess. Then run it to 425 for an hour. Let it cool. Once more with high temp oil (avocado oil works wonders just pour it into a pump sprayer) then do a couple more rounds spraying and wiping down just the grates and you will have a well seasoned grill that will wipe clean fairly easily. Basically, treat your grill like you would a good iron skillet.

Gosh, I’m at the same decision point as @06314. I was literally about to place my order for the El Patron after watching your review of it for the fourth time. I was convinced El Patron represented the best versatility/functionality ratio for my purposes. Now I am wondering which unit suits me better, however, I am leaning toward longer splits, rotisserie and fire bricks over what I see with this unit (pizza is not a high priority for me). I wish you could enunciate a clear distinction between the two LSG grills (besides versatility), but I do realize you need more time with this guy before you can draw concrete conclusions.

Am I missing something? I see grilling options but how can you use this for cooking a brisket like you would on an offset? How can you evenly cook a brisket with the fire on one side. The heat transfer can’t be even. Since the “cold” side is so small one side of the brisket is going to be getting much hotter than the other. I have so many questions. It appears to me that it would be a great direct heat cooker with wood or charcoals but any other indirect smoking/cooking seems problematic. And for the price, you could get 3 different cookers for three different types of smoking/bbq/grilling that will do better jobs at what it was designed for, and save money.
