Did you see the Volks Electric Railway? Worlds first electric railway opened in 1883. Runs 1.25 miles along the sea front. With roling stock dating back to 1901. At one time it ran through the sea to Rottingdean. But a combination of storm damage. Alongside new sea defences that would have ment moving it into deeper water. Killed off that section, I dont think health and safety rules would allow an electric railway in the sea now. If you know where to look you can find some relics of that section.

I discovered Brighton in 1991 when I was working as a flight attendant for Delta and instead of laying over in London that week we stayed in Brighton. I loved it! Went back on my own and then decided to live there for 3 years. Really friendly city and it was a fab change from Nyc! I need to move BACK to Brighton soon! And the West pier is a sentimental piece of history to many Brightonians. My boyfriend watched it burn down twenty years ago.😊

The Lanes are 100% part of the vibe. Friday/Saturday on the main road from the rail station can be chaos (clubs/bars) but the whole of Brighton has managed to keep a great balance of classic UK seaside, bars, clubs, amazing pubs, indie shopping, and genuine culture, which is rare. It’s a jewel of UK seaside.
@djdusted6485

Meh! Lived there most my life, its a dive. Its expensive and rubbish doesn't get collected on the regular unless you live in the rich parts of the city. It's a joke, people have no boundaries and driving is a nightmare (traffic/potholes). Rents are high wages are low and more and more students are squeezed in each year. Yeah you can have a good day out but living there is horrible.
@Dehydratedpencil
@Dehydratedpencil Жыл бұрын
@@djdusted6485Wouldn't go so far to say it's a dive but I agree with you that rents are high as hell and basically all building projects are for student housing, it's ridiculous. I'd rather live in Shoreham/Worthing, still got a good seaside vibe but without all the crowds and traffic.

Fun fact: the Brighton West Pier features briefly in a montage in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once so it's iconic enough for that amazing film! Also the slide is called a "helter skelter" - often found at fairgrounds and beach resorts - you typically slide down them on a burlap sack and pray to avoid friction burns.

I have such fond memories of the West Pier. When I was a young child in the 1950s we lived in Hove (just a mile or so to the west of Brighton). Money was tight, so when the sun shone my mother and I would walk to the West Pier, sit in the fresh air and watch the sea gulls nicking everyone's chips! Great days!

I was born in Brighton nearly 68 years ago, and many of my Brighton ancestors go back hundreds of years. I have a huge fondness for my home town and its history, but I no longer live there. Changes have sadly made living in much of Brighton unbearable. Unless you have money and can afford to live in the nice areas, the cheaper parts have become intolerable. However, I have great memories of a happy childhood, youth, and early married life in Brighton.

I visited Brighton in September on my first proper solo trip and fell in love with it. Everyone was wonderful despite my awkwardness of having to explain that I was on my own. It included taking a severely delayed train from the borders down to London then switching. I was knackered by the time I got there 😂 I then done a couple days in London which I'm far more familiar with. I always say that I'd go back more often if I didn't live so far away.

If anyone is wondering what happened to the west pier, in 1975 it was closed forever due to a severe arson attack, which burnt it down to metal, since then it has been hit by waves which have caused erosion, damaging it further. My old Next door neighbor, who sadly passed away, was on the pier when it was burnt down. Prior to this, it had been severely damaged during WW2 which damaged a lot of the infrastructure, I hope this helped.

It was closed in 1975 due to the owners not affording the maintenence, it gradually fell apart, greatly damaged by the storm in 1987 and no access since 1991, then was burnt due to an arson attack in 2003. Ah it is so lovely that you visited my home!!! I love living in Brighton. British people often comment that there isn’t really anywhere else like it in the UK. I’d say Bristol is the place that comes the closest… If you come back, you have to go to the seafront and try an ice cream from Marocco’s. EVERYONE knows it and in the summer the queues are huge. Brighton is famous across the UK for being a place that is not only incredibly socially liberal but also has managed to maintain a good balance between the old and the new. You have the Laines and we don’t have any out-of-town retail parks spoiling the views. You definitely get the best of all worlds with the sea and London not being far away. Only downside is that it is massively expensive. We pay London prices but don’t get a London salary.

Brilliant, there's loads of Flour Pot Bakeries, I don't go to that one but I love those Sausage Rolls.

You should have visited the North Laines (close to South Laines) as well - the shops there are more bohemian and somewhat cheaper! Love the channel.

Really enjoyed your video. When you come back visit the North Laines and St James's Street in Kemptown, less touristy but a lot of fun. All the best, Ben

Brighton is one of the coolest cities in Britain...such good vibes. I live in Southsea along the South Coast in Portsmouth which I would recommend! I'm originally from a town called Lytham St Annes which is a gorgeous Victorian seaside resort and 10 minutes up the coast is Blackpool! You should try Blackpool...its one of the corniest, cheesiest places in the UK! Do go to Lytham St Annes though for the genteel lifestyle.

the pier you mentioned was called the chain pier. you can also at low tide see the old footings for the original volks railway. it run over the sea from brighton to rottingdean. the aquarium was the dolphin aquarium which had dolphin shows. on a clear day it is the isle of wight you can see. it's a lot different now them what is was like when i was young.

Brighton is such a great city. I feel like when you visit Brighton, you have to go down to the beach for fish and chips and ice cream to follow. You just have to, after all, you're by the sea

Seeing this video brings back memories of an old classic B &W movie I saw many years ago called The Brighton Strangler. It starred Laird Cregar and was an excellent thriller movie.

Whoops! Sorry about that. The Brighton Strangler starred John Loder. Laird Cregar was in a movie thriller called the Lodger that was also very good.
