Physics of this planet tell us: 1. The angle of the ball leaving racket ONLY depends on “where the spot of the ball” is hitted. It has nothing to do with the swing path or the orientation of the racket head. Eg. If the racket is hitting the middle of the ball, draw a line pass through this spot and centre will be the direction leaving the racket head, no matter the racket head is fully open, means perpendicular to the ground, or almost fully close, means almost parallel to the ground. This angle also will NOT change no matter you are swing low to high or high to low. If you are not hitting the middle but a spot near the bottom half, draw a line pass through this spot and the centre,no matter what’s the swing path or orientation of racket head, the ball goes up with the same angle. 2. The swing path doesn’t change the angle the ball leaving the racket(explained in point 1)but it will add spin to the ball. Eg if you hit the middle of the ball with an almost horizontal swing path, the orientation of the racket head is fully open, the ball will straight out from the racket with no spin. But if you swing from low to high with a fully open racket head, the ball will straight out but with a top spin. What if the racket orientation is not fully open but almost fully close, (it may not be easy to address the ball in this case) Well, if the swing path is keep no change-horizontal, you will not hitting the middle of the ball but slight above. From point 1, the ball will leaving the racket with a downward direction and if you draw a line pass through the contact point and the centre of the ball, even though your swing path is horizontal, you are actually swing “upward”, it means the ball will fly downward with a top spin! “Swing low to high” to create top spin is only part of the story. The same principle works in golf, table tennis and many many more. By the way, hitting the ball in upward trend or downward trend after bounce makes a huge difference.

I'm confused, and wishing there had been a side view. From the front, it looks like your racquet head goes below the ball level, but then swings up above the ball before the ball arrives. I thought you were saying to pass the racquet head under the ball itself. Are my eyes fooling me, or did I miss the point? Thanks for clarifying, Steve.

Concur. I assumed Steve didn't have a handy representation video but the idea could be effectivly expressed with words and would fly - Maybe it is an experiment to see how long it takes to notice the king has no clothes..

Hi. Interesting point. I actually made this video 3 times. Never done this before. My racket goes below the ball. But it creates an illusion of being above the ball. Very interesting, and strange. But. What is more important is, try and create your own illusion... Imagine swinging below the ball, and see what is your natural swing path. Hope that this makes sense
