This Lego X-wing MOC was designed to be the best play scale, yet detailed set. It is based off of Blue Leader's X-wing from Rogue One with pilot Antoc Merrick. This set is smaller than Lego's #75301 X-wing but much tighter and better built. The S-foil mechanism is very snappy, precise and uses a button on top and bottom of the x-wing that feels very nice.
After looking at the parts list further it actually only costs around $40 to build from scratch. If you have the #75301 Lego set it takes off over $10 and the remaining pieces only cost $29!
You can get the instructions here: reb.li/m/170620

I just finished buliding it and i must say it's an awesome moc! The instructions are easy to read and the build is very enjoyable. The ship itself is super fun to play around with and looks amazing on display and it's super sturdy too as demonstrated in the video. The only thing i would request is some alternate colours (mainly red 5) but other than that this is honestly the most definitive X-wing moc you would find anywhere and I'd recommend to any star wars fan!

I think it also has to do with there being multiple different versions of Minifigure scale. I.e with respect to the head, height, width, etc. Since a fig isn’t to scale with itself, it will lead to at least one dimension of a “minifig-scale” set feeling too big.

And technically it is minifigure scale, because minifigure scale can range from 1/45 scale to 1/25. I opt for 1/45 (smaller), but if you were going by minifigure height then you could justify 1/25 being minifigure scale which is a huge difference. The playscale set easily falls within those limits

It would be interesting if they made a new xwing canopy, but they would probably do it for a shrunken down version, like the y-wing in the Yavin base. However, that scale canopy might actually work for my MOC

@@BAUFmanBricks Maybe brickbuilt canopy would be an answer? RIght now I'm pretty happy with my 2021 X-wing, I loved the new solution for the nose cone in it compared to virtually all the previous sets and I gave it fair bit of modifications - redesigned, longer laser cannons, retractable landing gear, inside engine details, more covered rear fuselage and lowered astromech position, but I'm not gonna lie, I fell in love with the wing operation of your MOC, as well as the slope of the upper nose (funny thing, how LEGO keeps getting that part wrong, even on the massive UCS sets). If I'll be able to source the bricks, I'm tempted to build yours one day.

My only gripe with this moc that the nose is like a stud or two short and the underside of the canopy is too beefy but everything else is so good
@BAUFmanBricks
@BAUFmanBricks 4 ай бұрын
It’s the cockpit glass that makes the nose look too short because proportionally this is nearly spot on in length. A minifigure is 1.5” tall and this ship is 11.5” long. Nearly same proportions as a 1.77m human and 13.4m x-wing. And yes it’s a little beefy underneath due to support needs. I had a skinnier nose at one point but it didn’t have all the right angles and needed more details.

I had the original x-wing as well, and yes we really need a new light gray as well as more sand blue pieces available for the Tie. Thank you! Fun little fact, I used 3 distinct pieces in this MOC that I know were in my 1999 x-wing. One of the cockpit computer tiles was a misprint and I purposefully put it in this new x-wing. Also, the two finger hinge blocks that were used for the 1999 windscreen are now used for the back legs.

I think the only critique I have with this model is that the slope underneath the cockpit (which I believe is the cargo compartment in-lore) shouldn't be inline with the cockpit but much further back. Let me clarify by saying, it is great work. But even at a glance I can see why Lego does it the way they do it. The proportions are really off in the middle fuselage. The trouble with th x wing as a minifig scale model is how little the nose narrows. I think in its "true" scale it's only a decimeter or so narrower as the start of the nose cone than it is at the width of the hull where the thrusters and wings attach. Minifigs require at least two studs wide to fit their feet, which means you have to go no fewer than 3 wide narrowing to just over 2 at the nose, and any framing that kind of does that makes for a very unstable model. So you wind up with compromises out of necessity, which make a lot of sense, but cause proportion to be off. That's the main reason the Lego official models are all too big at scale - the proportions within the model are more important to the license.
@BAUFmanBricks
@BAUFmanBricks 4 ай бұрын
I don’t disagree with that assessment. I do find all of Lego’s attempts at playscale noses to be too blocky and not sloped enough and I personally find that more distracting. So yes, I compromised to make it a little thinker in order to slope it and fit a minifigure. When working in playscale, proportions need to be skewed for the minifigure which usually results in thicker/wider proportions. The correct title of my video should be “the perfect x-wing at 1/45 scale with the current pieces in 2024”, but it didn’t really roll off the tongue

@BAUFmanBricks
@BAUFmanBricks 4 ай бұрын
Definitely possible but would need minor modifications. The large slope pieces on each side of the pilot are held by 4 studs, two of those studs could be removed and free up more room in the cockpit. The large slope pieces would still hold with two studs but my focus was getting that super sturdy for playability

I've given compliments to your design somewhere in the replies already, just watching this again and I had a thought. While I agree the official x-wing is too big, maybe the official falcon is too small? Or is it just the fact that minifigures are easily twice as wide as regular people that's throwing things off? 🤔 Im just coming back from a video showing off a UCS-sized MOC X-wing and I think lego really struggles structurally at that scale, especially when moving parts are involved, or anything that's meant to be long and skinny and horizontal. Even though the wings had been designed to close flush on that model, there was droop due to gravity and the wings couldn't stay closed properly without little custom-built clamps or brackets or whatever that would hold the wings in the correct position. I really do feel the shape and geometry of your model are really really nice regardless of the limited space you were working with and again, that wing mechanism looks enormously satisfying. 😁👍
@BAUFmanBricks
@BAUFmanBricks 4 ай бұрын
If you are referring to the UCS falcon, it actually is close to minifigure scale and scales very well with this X-wing at around 1/45 scale. But if you are referring to the playscale Falcon that I modified, yes it is smaller at 1/78 scale. The larger a ship gets the more I try to size it down. And you are right, even though they can pack more detail into larger sets, drooping is an issue because the of the plastic material. I have seen this be an issue with the large star destroyers

@@BAUFmanBricks ok, wow. I had no idea the UCS falcon was close to the correct size for minifigures. I love the dedication that you put in it and your enthusiasm in this video! Tho to be fair I prefer the official one, imo yours is a bit too bulky in width of the cockpit and short in length. Also I wouldn’t say that “generally speaking” this is “the perfect x wing moc” as every moc I encountered it had its flaws… but we are talking about Lego, on itself is out of scale due to the minifig size… so I would say that being subjective and a bit objective, perfection in this sense does not exist!

Is there a mistake in your parts list for this MOC build? I was having a look at the rebrickable page and it indicates that the build requires 3 of the 963961 cockpit windscreen/canopy pieces? Forgive me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure an x wing only needs one cockpit canopy/windscreen? Or are the other 2 used in some other part of the build? Sorry to ask but I like to check inventory lists before buying MOC instructions…

THANK YOU for pointing this out, it was a mistake and is now fixed. Much appreciated! Probably the best playscale X-Wing I've seen. The S-foil mechanism is awsome! On a personal note: I'd try to be a bit more humble. Maybe that's a cultural thing, but calling it "the perfect X-Wing" just to admit the cockpit piece should be 2 studs shorter 5 minutes later is a bit weird to me. Maybe I'm just tired and cranky tho... Still, you got a new subscriber in me! Keep up the great work!

@@BAUFmanBricks Inthert's latest X-Wing MOC is just about as small as yours, but is far better detailed and proportioned. I think the biggest thing holding your MOC back is the choice to use the large curved slope pieces on the sides of the fuselage. They're not really the right shape and since they're so large, they prevent you from adding other detail in that area.

@BAUFmanBricks

I’ll agree there are many better detailed MOCs, but they use twice as many pieces (1334 vs 575) and are much larger. The purpose of this build was to properly scale to a minifigure’s height. A minifigure is about 1.5” tall and this ship is 11.5” long. A human is 1.77m tall and an x-wing is 13.4m long. Do the math on the proportional scaling and this ship hits the mark better than any other MOC. But that also means it’s severely limited in details to fit in a smaller frame. To each his own, but I focus on keeping my builds true to minifigure height or even play scale (for the larger ships). Plus it comes with the added bonus of being more affordable, and more playable.
@_Sneer
@_Sneer 4 ай бұрын
@@BAUFmanBricks Of course, it depends on the scale adopted. Minifigure scale is a broad concept, depending on whether we take into account the width or height of the figure. Everyone has their own preferences and I certainly agree that your designs are definitely more kid-friendly and can be used for play and not just to keep on a shelf. Lego is for everyone. Good luck with your future models.
