Yeah it's about knowing each piece individually then learning how to pair them. And the more you use some types of units, or brands the more you start to understand the logic behind them. But when you start its confusing as hell.

Allows me to add extra few percussions, arps, fx etc - and switch basslines as fast as I want. Really enjoying this setup.

Very Interesting, RT! Please Please. Someday, I would appreciate a video regarding setups for ALL OTHER songwriters that don't rely on 2 bar tonic drone grooves. We have been left behind in this new era of tech. And though I have racks of today's synths, I have YET to find a setup for horizontal songs (songs with chord changes) I can use without a laptop.

Sick demo. The OT is ridiculously deep. I'm always blown away to see the different ways artists use it. I mostly use it for live ambient, where slowly morphing samples and live loops are fair play. That said, I often sample synth, drums, and "field" recordings into the OT, and live mangling, looping, and sequencing are always at play. I actually have recorded 3 or 4 minutes worth of electronic goodness and let those extended samples play as "tracks". I often play it solo, with no other instruments, which makes the performance move along nicely, and lets me have 7 or all 8 tracks for the samples (not that I use them all at the same time). There is so much to the OT, I am not sure I could run out of ideas. Thanks for this demo and lesson. Everything you're saying is very true.

Clear explanations bro. On the octatrack l find inputting chords pretty straightforward, on your midi keys hold down chord of choice, press trigger on octatrack, and chord is programmed. You can then modulate the length and notes using the lfo's.

this is quite interesting, specially for the mixing flexibility. I'm currently using a setup which uses Octatrack, Digitakt, Audiothingies P6 and a small MIDI controller (Faderfox UC4) for some quick access to a few controls. OT mainly as a mixer - DT on AB, P6 on CD. I use the transition trick to transition between tracks, so I'm always mixing a recorded loop with the new track (only one pattern on the OT as of right now, so it's easier to just reload a single part - less risks of fucking up... a bit underused for the OT, but oh well... still haven't had the time to configure it deeper)... and while this works pretty good, is not as flexible as your approach... I'll consider it for the future, since I'm always trying new ideas for setups. great video as always :)

@@milkweedreflections I own a Squarp Pyramid and been willing to sell it. The Squid is more hands on for me, which suits me way better. The Squarp is powerful but too much menu diving and clicking / scrolling. I like more the immediacy of the Squid. Record / tweak / make it random. It's more a creativity-machine. And I love it for that. It's filling a gap of hardware controllers that can record stuff but also gives a toolset to spark your creativity.

My favorite way to do polyphonic MIDI sequencing on the octatrack is to use multiple tracks sending to the same channel. you can do separate velocities and note lengths in chords and you can mute and un-mute midi tracks for inversions and stuff.
@RickyTinez
@RickyTinez 5 жыл бұрын
But you’d have to record in one note at a time yea?
@adamhudsons
@adamhudsons 5 жыл бұрын
@@RickyTinez Yeah, one note at a time. I make a track with root notes then copy it and transpose the notes to make chords. Then I'll try to get creative and move them around and adjust length and velocity or micro-timing for strum effects. it works great for me but maybe not for everyone.

If you ever wanted both of them to be slaved from the Octatrack, you can get a MIDI splitter for like $40 that splits the one MIDI out into two. It's powered by the MIDI cable so no extra power supply. You just put your slave boxes on different channels so they don't clash.

I totally agree with you, too much focus on “live composition”... crowd just usually wants to hear and feel the beat without any lapse... plus if it’s too continuous/homogenous, where’s the contrast in the overall set? You’ve got the right idea. I mostly produce but got some decks to practice on and I will try to start adding more custom stuff to that from my “collection”. I really need to just hook some stuff up like this though and create a “jam set” too though!

Here’s my conondrum: More Gear = More Fun/Less Productive. Less Gear = Less Fun/More Productive. For Example - if all I owned was my mc707, I would be focused on setting up tracks, patches that work well together in a project, and composing tracks. But now that I have so much gear, I find myself caring less about sequencing and competing a piece and instead preferring to just jam out.

My setup is similar in some ways (L to R) - Mono Station for analog bass, Digitone for FM, and Circuit for synth and ambient perc. Sure, I’m not doing club music like you, but it sure helps to have less rather than more as you said. I play keys over top of those devices so it’s nice to have a smaller, reliable rig without a lot of fuss.

Cool video, Enrique! You might consider a simple MIDI splitter so you can have more options. I got one and it opened up many possibilities for OT. One nice thing is if you’re sending out from OT to all other devices, the OT’s keys can be used to play any device and it automatically switches based on which track you select. Meaning you can play all your synths from the OT’s keyboard as you like. Plus you can sequence everything from the OT that way.

I’d swap out the Moog and Novation with a desktop Virus TI2 because it’s multitimbral. I can get about 8 solid layers out of it. An Octatrack and Virus TI2 is a powerhouse together.

BTW Nice ols-school deep house tunes. Reminds me of 1998 Los Angeles warehouse times.
