I’m a fan of taking it slow but getting a grail piece quickly, then working backwards. Sounds weird, but once you identify your grail piece, get it, then when you have the itch, you aren’t always trying to climb a ladder at price points and can enjoy the cheaper watches for what they really offer. Seems to have worked for me, YMMV.

Been into the hobby for 30 years(more than half my life). I group my watches into dress, diver/sports, and chrono. Sold almost my entire collection and left 4 grail pieces. When I see a watch I like I'd ask myself if I'd replace any of my current pieces with it. For the last 5 years my answer has been no. Serial flipper, so I imposed a 2 Year Rule on mine - so if I'm going to buy it, am I going to be happy with it enough to keep it for 2 years? And anything I already had couldn't be sold until I'd had it 2 years. Net result is I've stopped impulse buying things, and learned to wear through the niggles/don't like it phases. Last bought a watch - a Black Bay 41 - in Jan last year.

I got down to 4 pieces and have stopped for now. New Seamaster 300M white dial/black bezel, older B&R 03-92 steel, Seiko Sarb033 and the CasiOak. It’s a pretty good mix and heck I can only wear one at once.

I have 14 watches in my watch collection. Given the wide array of dial colors that I have, it gives me a chance to wear all of them to match my clothing, at least once, within a two week period. People do this with shoes and other articles of clothing. So as long as you can afford it, I don't think large watch collections are excessive.

As someone that is in underwriting, most insurance carriers have a policy called an inland marine/personal articles to cover your watches, jewelry, and other items on. By covering solely on your homeowners or renters insurance, if you make a claim, it will become a ratable claim and your rates will go up. Too many claims and they will cancel your policy. For this reason, I highly suggest putting watches on an inland marine policy.

One automatic luxury/tool, one automatic dive, one automatic GMT, one automatic field, one quartz beater, and three that were gifted to me, specifically, one quartz fashion watch, one gold quartz dress watch, and one gold dress manual wind. The short answer why you shouldn't buy everything you might like is, because you might like a lot of watches, more than you can reasonably afford. But, I get it. Sometimes the enjoyment of rapidly expanding a collection is part of the appeal of this hobby. Just don't go broke doing it.

I think more people do this than would care to admit, at least the looking at a large collection and getting a measure of satisfaction and happiness from it. It's almost like that's looked down upon, to have that collector's mentality that runs contrary to some pure, utilitarian notion that watches should only be bought if they can get adequate wear time. People do this with an infinite number of other hobbies. For me, this is the only hobby that I spend actual money on. Whatever brings you joy in whatever way.

When I bought my first watches, I mentioned your name & everyone knows about you in a GOOD WAY! I did what the woman said at the beginning & bought 2 watches together & spent $9,300 a month ago. Now 2 days ago bought the Tissot PRX Automatic. Now can't wait to buy another watch. My friends & sister think I am nuts. You do need to take a step back & decide what type of collection you want. Not just based on price & status. To answer about insurance. I have State Farm for Homeowners & they have a "Personal Articles Policy" totally separate. Covers not just watches but Jewelry as well. Good to see the Tudor Style getting a bit of a shout-out. Very cool and underrated in my opinion. Also, it's the only watch under the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation with a nonprecious metal fluted bezel. I think it is GOOD to make some mistakes at the beginning, such as buying too quickly. When you make those mistakes, it REALLY helps inform your future buying decisions. I bought about 6-7 watches in my first year I will likely never wear again, but, there are REASONS I could only really learn by falling in love with a watch, getting it, and slowly falling out of love that helps inform my future decisions. I tried multiple styles, sizes, movements, etc...and really found that specific thing that made me pull the trigger early, and the things that ultimately led me to sell or give away those watches. I also got a watch (Bulova lunar pilot) that NOW I might not buy (size, color, movement, brand, etc...), but I wear it often. My collection is now down to 4 watches, 1 of which I wear 50% of the time, and the other 3 spend equal time in that rotation. As long as someone isn't going broke or into debt, those learning experiences are well worth it.

I insured thru Allstate since they already covered my home and car… they provide insurance if anything we’re to happen to my watch for any reason around the globe up to the appraisal value. I believe 1% is correct as a yearly fee. It’s amazing how much more comfortable I feel wearing my watch since it’s been insured

As for insurance, a homeowner's policy will allow you to schedule jewelry items. In most cases this coverage is a great option for the "average" person. If you get into the high end ($50k and up), there are companies (like you mentioned) that focus solely on this category. If you rent a home/apartment, the ability to schedule the items is generally available; however, the limits will be significantly lower than what's avail under a home policy. The primary benefit to scheduling the items under a home policy is often $0 deductibles, world wide coverage, theft and mysterious disappearance is part of the coverage. This is significantly diff from adding an endorsement to increase your jewelry limits. If you assume/keep it under your personal property limits, you will have a deductible, and you don't have mysterious disappearance (for example, you're on a beach trip and your diver watch is suddenly not on your wrist when you got back on the boat/shore.

You are right about taking your time. I definitely jumped in a bit too fast. I feel very fortunate, and I love my watches, but spending that much in such a short time, it does put a toll on my mind. The downturn in the market last year really gave me a lot of stress, juggling between losses in the stock market and paying for my other living expenses. Watches afterall should be something happy to enjoy, but sometimes the FOMO can get to you. It's hard to say no to an SA. you never know will they give you another chance later.

So we all know the rules around a Swiss watch needing 60% of its production value to be generated within Switzerland to be considered Swiss made. (Movement components need to be 50% manufactured in Switzerland) Of course, this includes assembly & testing which doesn’t physically contribute to the watch in real terms. Question, in terms of weight, is a Tudor watch more Chinese or more Swiss? I reckon it’s more Chinese than Swiss. It has to be to make it work from a bottom line point of view. Change my mind……? My collection is a constant ebb and flow. I'm currently holding around 30+ pieces, all on the inexpensive end of the market, my highest value pieces being Orient, Citizen, and Seiko. I've found that I'm too nervous wearing anything of greater value, for fear of damaging or losing it. I like my watches relatively pristine. That being said, there are always new and exciting things to drool over and consider. Everything I'm currently interested in is put on a ranked buy list, where it may stay for days, weeks, or even years while I consider each one and shop around for the best price. Many pieces eventually drop off the list because after the initial infatuation I see something that doesn't quite match my aesthetic or ergonomic expectations. I have to ask myself, what aesthetic/emotional need does this particular watch fill, how close does it come to the goal, and is this just a stopgap until the more perfect piece comes along? I also ask my wife and daughters for their opinions, and they always point out things I don't initially see. Even so, I sometimes pay the literal price for an impulse buy, and either return an item immediately, or resell after a few wears. I lose a bit of money, but maybe learn a good lesson about my wants and what I'm willing to deal with. (My most recent lesson: no butterfly clasps, no pins and collars, especially on a watch that is not conducive to an aftermarket bracelet or strap.) On the other side of the equation, pieces that I bought a few years or even more than a decade ago I will eventually resell, gift, or (gasp) throw away if it's no longer working and not worth the cost to repair. That's led to a few sad retirements, but in the end, I remind myself that they are just things.

I feel like you test the waters starting out by getting some lower end pieces and wanting a new watch often, then perhaps diving into your first Swiss watch and some microbrands as you learn more and more about the hobby. Eventually to where I am today where I'm selling off pieces to get one grail piece and will have about 5 watches in my collection. I think collecting differs for folks depending on where they are in life and there financial situation. I still get the itch to buy but i'm much better and telling myself to wait. As for Tudor I agree they are too dependent on the Black Bay, I see those everywhere for resale and yes I understand you want to keep expanding the brand that's making you bank but it's about time they bring out some new models or expand the other lines.

The short answer to the ideal collection size is 8 to at most 12. We collectors joke about the perfect number of watches being N + 1, and over time we sometimes find ourselves with way more watches than we can possibly wear. 32 watches in less then a year is too many, and I say that as someone who has gone overboard buying watches at times. Even if we are careful, we can accumulate too many watches that eventually take on sentimental value. In my collection, that number is 8, including my 3 watches that belonged to my Dad, 1 that belonged to my grandfather, a watch I bought myself when I was in Europe, a watch I bought when i graduated law school, and several watches my wife bought me. Can't sell them, even if I don't wear some of them much anymore. So what is the right number? I have thought about it and I think putting sentimental favorites aside, the maximum number is 8 to 10, and certainly no sensible person needs more than 12. (not that it would stop many of us). So why 8? Because that is about what most people can wear in a rotation and bond with. And it is more than what most people need for their lifestyles. It could be fewer than 8, but probably shouldn't be more than 12, or you will find a lot of your watches sitting in a box, not getting used. First how many watches are actually getting worn day to day? What do most people need? 2 or 3 nice every day watches, 2 rugged GADA watches, 1 beater, and one special occasion watch. That is 7. Add a wild card, just something unique to the individual and you have 8. Add a few sentimental favorites and you are up to 12. I can tell you from experience, once you get past about 20, it is hard to wear in a rotation, and inevitably, some of your collection might go months, or even years without getting used.

The Cartier tank must is definitely the spearhead of making dress watches cool again. I think most people don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on a watch that could break if it gets a little wet. The tank must has positioned itself at a point of exclusivity without being too expensive and allows people to get into a watch with classic style. Regarding theft & insurance, companies used to carry a certain amount on the jewelry side but now they've gotten rid of that and you need it as a rider. In addition to that, they want photos and details of whatever it is that you want insured. In other words, they want appraisals and those are expensive. I'm with Progressive. They have jewelry insurance. Just ONE of my watches valued at $5,000 w/ a $500 deductible is $300 a year. If you add rings, more watches, etc., you're looking at rates that exceed what your car or home insurance costs! Just keep it in a safe place is advice to myself. One last thing regarding Breguet watches. Their brand is better than Rolex BUT the resale value is not. Rolex by far beats them. My investment is in the Rolex.

Dear Teddy, you published a beautiful video some time ago where you divided watches into categories. Chronographs, diver, GMT, dress ... I think a very intelligent way to arrange a collection would be following that video of yours. The number is not important as the kinds of watches, or brands. One could collect for instance chronographs from different brands, diver and so on. Keep up the good work, always very interesting and a pleasure to watch your videos. Even if I never understood how that "reward" thing works ;-)

That White Birch looked great on your wrist Teddy! I really hope that dress watches make a nice roundabout. Seems every watch currently is some insane diver style watch. It's odd to me that divers are so popular when nobody is diving 6m on a regular basis let alone 200. My budget doesn't allow me to look at Tudor and Rolex or Omega. For me a beautiful Longines is a bit of grail due to cost. I have been absolutely staring at their Zulu GMT as it doesn't look like everything else. I could save for that and be content for awhile (easy to read, robust and good water resistance) and maybe begin to find other watches from there that cost less. I think realistically a collection of a dozen or less watches ensures I can wear them all as they would range from dress, sport, and travel.
