I remember as a young man the campaign to eat more cheese. This would have been in the early fifties. The Milk Marketing board came up with advertizing for ploughmans lunches. It was bread, cheese and butter. These had just come off rationing so the idea was sound. Many pubs offered this along with a pint of best. I can't remember seeing salad or tomatoes on the plate, but I did occasionally come across pork pie, especcially in the Midlands. The cheese was also regional and not just cheddar.
@GreenoEats6 ай бұрын
Yeah, some people claim that it was the Milk Marketing Board who invented the Ploughmans, but my understanding is just that the re-popularised it. Back in the day when pubs didn't really have much of a food offering this would have been a simple meal they could offer with a foaming pint as you say - delicious!
@5714sqd6 ай бұрын
@GreenoEats The MMB used the lunch as a prop in an advertising campaign. I'm pretty sure they didn't come up with that name, but it was clever of them to get folks eating cheese again. It was rationed until 1954, along with meat. I know my mother was upset when I joined the RAF in 53, not because of joining but the loss of one ration book in the household, lol.

This is far nicer than the one at the Ship Inn. I love the addition of the Brie; not all Brie is French, there have been some new ones coming out of Devon recently, they be needing to call it "Brie style" if not Brie, but you would struggle to taste the difference. I still think your homemade one is unbeatable. The cakes looked amazing. I am a real lover of Bakewell pies and tarts; although you can keep the cherry, and the fact that it has a very thick layer of marzipan is a real divider of people, because although I love it, I can understand those that do not.

If you were to mix the brie with the cheddar, the colour, texture and taste would be almost identical to traditional home made farmhouse cheese - and that's what a ploughman would've eaten out in the field. The flavour of farmhouse cheese (made from raw milk, for family consumption) was often tinged with that of cider, as the wheels would be wrapped in cheesecloth that was then doused with cider to help preserve it. Many was the year when, at Christmas, Dad would be given a small wheel of farmhouse cheese by a grateful farmer (he was an agricultural engineer) and we would eat hunks of it each day! When I say a small wheel ... it would easily have been 20lbs!
@GreenoEats6 ай бұрын
Wow, I do like cheese at Christmas, but I think I might struggle to get through that much ! A while back I visited the Bath Cheese Company (not for a video, just for a day out) and they had cheeses that they make which sound similar to what you describe - a softer cheese washed in cider.
@lizg55746 ай бұрын
@@GreenoEats There 6 cheese eaters in my immediate family, then over Christmas at any one time, there might be another 20! So that wheel lasted until February if we were careful! Brie, French Dressing and not Branston should not be allowed on a Ploughmans. It should be cheddar cheese ( preferably made in Somerset) some Branston pickle, a pickled onion ( pickled in the UK, and made from Uk onions and Malt vinegar that has been brewed and the malt grown in the UK) some proper bread and some scrumpy made from 100% UK apples ( preferably grown in Somerset fermented in the UK (preferably in Somerset). What you have had there was a Ploughman's Style lunch containing non Uk ingredients! Sorry if that sounds harsh but a PLOUGHMAN'S is what a person who ploughed used to eat for lunch! Brie and French dressing where not part of it. And before people start saying it was invented by the MMB, it was made popular my them ( I worked at one stage for them) but if a Cornish Pasty must be made in Cornwall , Parmesan has a PDO you have to have some standards.

I agree re the brie and French dressing (delicious though they were)... Can't go as far as insisting on Branston mind, cos I am sure your average ploughman back in the day would have been whatever chutney Mrs Ploughman knocked up 🙂 Scrumpy though, top choice that!

@@GreenoEats Branston is an outlier for me i dont like sweet with savoury it has to be just right? I used to just buy Branston because i didnt like Chuntney. I have tried alot of the own brand Pickles the ones i dont like get eaten by the other half! Buying the lidl one until they change the recipe.

@@stevewhitcher6719 that's fair enough, I am similar with sweet and savoury, although not so much with cheese. Love cheese with grapes, pineapple, apple etc. In fact I should probably learn to like fruit without cheese 🤣

So what's the difference between an Australian bloke and cheese? Answer; Cheese matures. An Aussie bloke told me that before anyone has a pop

Haha - glad you added that caveat, otherwise you might have been in for an antipodean pile-on!

The height of English cuisine: The Ploughman's Lunch. Except "Ploughman's Lunch" is merely a term devised by marketers to describe prosaic cheap food - cheese bread and pickles. Not that you would pay little for this slop in a restaurant.
@GreenoEats6 ай бұрын
Food doesn't have to be complicated or full of process to be tasty. Also not true about the marketers. They took a traditional old meal and indeed did market it post rationing as a way to sell more cheese. What meals mean English cuisine to you that you prefer?

I can’t remember the last time I had a ploughman’s 🤔 Eww! “Cake house” 🤢 Cheese to ham ratio could be better 🫤 Apple would be nicer cored and sliced for you 😐 Farmhouse bread would suit better 😐 Not sure about value for money overall ( 1 x ham, 2 x cheese the rest cheap ingredients - salad, bread, chutney etc) 🤔
@GreenoEats2 ай бұрын
It certainly wasn’t “perfect “, but for just £9 it was certainly substantial and I think great value. Lovely location too

Swap out that Brie for Stilton , sourdough bread instead of sliced bread, and erase that sad salad for roasted vegitables then we're talking ...
