Yeah. Perfectly said. As a full time podcaster I can tell you that unless you’re THIS channel, this is not a cost effective idea. I’ll go as far as saying it’s dumb. It’s not plug and play - it’s not easy - it’s expensive - and it’s purely positioned as a solution for a video. 🤷🏼♂️

The reason why podcasters are "sleeping" on this camera, speaking as a podcaster myself... wouldn't at all be because of the $5100-$5400 price tag just for the camera plus the $5000 price tag for the controller (RC-IP1000)... because all podcasters have $10K to drop on a single camera setup. I get this is a promo vid Harris, but honestly, how many of your following can honestly say they can go out and drop about $11K for 2 CR-N500's $5K for the RC-IP1000, and $3600-$4300 on a EOS R5 C, and $1200 for a lens... I mean honestly, you're promoting literally like $23,000 worth of gear trying to influence podcasters...

Looks incredible. It’s a shame you didn’t hook it up to a motorised slider. I imagine it could create some cinematic looking panning shots that utilise the camera’s subject tracking. It would give the illusion of a master videographer behind the lens when in reality, it’s just a programmable preset function. So much potential.

I got the comparison between the 5c and CR-N500 correct. To me, the giveaway was the shadows looking muddier and more compressed. Some of it can be helped if you had maybe more fill or bounce lighting, the darker areas are a little more exposed. If you want a monster video lens, the 24-105 2.8 would be amazing. Also has the power zoom attachments.

@@WhyitJellyDonut It's an amazing lens, but the 24-105 2.8 has IS and the 5c doesn't have ibis, so that combo he has isn't stabilized at all. And the 24-105 supports the power zoom attachment, so it can have the zoom controlled remotely. You lose 1 stop, but the IS, extra range at both the wide and far end, and the power zoom, make it a better lens for video production.

I worked with camera's, also PTZ, a lot and yes these Canon ones are really good. It was time Canon really stepped into the PTZ-market. Still, 5K voor a PTZ is still a lot of money. In the world of content creators, the price of cameragear really skyrocketed because of the expensive full frame camera's and lenses they use. Dropping 5-15k voor a vlogging camera or a studio camera setup is nothing anymore....so then a PTZ from Canon issn't such a bad idea. Although you could tell the diference in quality and with the PTZ you won't get a close shot with small depth-of-field with the camera just in front of you....like content creaters like to do. But....in terms of money vs function. Yes, a PTZ is handy, but you do have to put down that 5k for a Canon PTZ camera, because the rest below that price point is shit. And don't forget: you do need to get two...so it's 10k.....In the meanwhile, I can buy plenty of camera's that do one shot really well, well below that pricepoint. A Sony A5200 is still really great and costs me a few hondred on ebay. Get me 5/6 of those and I can do a lot with really good shot quality. So for an amateur with not to much room: go the other way. You wanne be more professional, have a large room and enough money...PTZ is an option. But the balance is thin.
@Merciful_Angel3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I do think the average podcast, even a successful one, would get more out of a few good static cameras than this one. If you have a fixed set-up, there's no real need for PTZ cameras. You know the shots you want for a static interview and you can just use your Sony A5200s. Where I think a PTZ camera like the CR-N500 would shine is something more dynamic, more like a modern talkshow. A half-decent operator could get you a specific one-off shot or even follow a guest as they move.

Worked with some Panasonic PTZs (UE150 or 160s) for a live production (eSports) before and they output some REALLY good footage for what they are. Live broadcast I think is where PTZs shine the most. For podcasting, I think they could be slightly overkill.

While I did guess the right camera, I was torn on it because I wasn't sure if it was just slightly better lighting. Something about the image on the CR-N500 seemed to lack the dynamic range of the EOS R5 - the colours popped just slightly less, the shadows felt just a touch less defined. But like I said, the difference was so small I was willing to put it down to the lighting rather than the camera.

I use four of the CR-N500s for my company's global broadcast events. I LOVE these cameras. But at six thousand dollars apiece including the auto-tracking add-ins, they're not exactly economical. Using NDI into OBS for shows, though, is a LIFE-SAVER. EDIT: To be absolutely pedantic, PoE is not sufficient to run the CR-N500-it requires PoE+ with 24V of power. So you'll need to fork up a little extra for a switch that will power it, and if you're going to use more than one camera into the same switch, you need to buy one that will support enough across the whole switch.

Not sure if I agree these are perfect considering the cost of the setup. You can tell the image is more contrasted in comparison. And you could have more normal cameras that look better to have more of the angles available. No extra zooming control, but for a podcast unless you are trying to be zany you do not need to zoom into someone's eye. However, if this was more of a walk talk talk live event and you needing to have these cameras far away then it might be perfect. Like how you might do a video where you walk through your house... a live event where the host can take you through different rooms into different areas with different activities. The quality will then make more sense for that content also. If you have one camera looking smooth with more antral contrast and the rest not it's a little jarring... especially for the extra cost for those cameras. I'd like the the water proof ones for a really high quality security system... like a security system that can also become content videos. Although I'd then be looking at 30k for a 3 camera setup with the proper means to control and record... that is a lot.

Cost aside, a podcaster will need a second person choosing the framing in real-time. He/she better not make a mistake! If working alone, I'll set up either a static shot on each camera (because we know how many guests are coming) or use a 360 camera for multiple guests (no reason that the host shot or the wide shot will change). Later, I can change the guest shot as needed in post. That's my one-man-band solution and it works well.

Aside from all my ranting above; cool stuff with awesome quality and diverse possibilities in shots! If you are at the podcast level of having a producer to control the PTZ, then yes, it is worth it to drop 10-15 grand on the two PTZs and possibly the controller. I think the current crop of Canon's PTZ can hold up for sure, but reviewing your footage I have to critque you on a couple things. Most of the PTZ angles look out of focus. Slightly, but enough to make a dramatic difference vs the R5C, and it's notable the lack of sharpness. You can dial in additional sharpness and manually focus better here on the PTZ so they not only match better to the R5C but also suffer much less in the shadows. Also, you are painfully underexposing here on a the PTZ's. They shine at a deeper depth of field, or higher Fstop, to compensate for the weaker zoom lenses (vs the R5C's lens options), I would have provided more light for the small sensors so you could run them at 0bd. Also, it really looks like you might have even recorded in 1080p as they are noticeably softer than the R5C. If you look at the angle at 6:40, you can see what the PTZ's look like in focus, every other angle is out and it really hurts your argument. Also, I'm really curious what shutter speed you recorded at, because it looks a lot like a 360 degree shutter instead of a 180 degree shutter. In broadcast it's not uncommon to shoot in a 360 degree shutter, so it can often be the default. However, it's very noticeable vs the R5C. Could be worth another test imo. I would gladly lend a hand to get you closer to matching, it's doable, but needs another pass.

Personally if you already had a r5c than this would be a great "mobile" camera, to where if someone gets up you can point it in different directions for example. I think 2 r5c and the CR-N500 as a third 'catch-all' camera would be pretty cool. Lets you zoom in on things people are holding or pivot if your showing something in the room.
