Few things, Link's tether is subjected to random chance; he does not always sweetspot it. There is a radius of 5.4 melee-meters around the tip of his hook, and when every single chain in the tether is within this radius, the game despawns the hookshot and checks to see if Link is within grabbing range of the ledge, if so he sweetspots it. The variance of this check leads to inconsistent sweetspots, and his ledge detection code also uses the previous frame's position for checking whether or not to sweetspot which compounds onto this inconsistency.
@beansprugget250522 сағат бұрын
So his reel in doesn't always works since he can move faster than 5.4 Melee units per frame?
@Savestate22 сағат бұрын
@ No, it’s more like the reel in animation has so much variance that his position can often times be too far from the ledge in one direction or another once all the chains in his hookshot are within the hook radius check.
@eliu390Күн бұрын
Another hidden input: right after the hookshot is released, while it's still in flight, Aklo inputs a drift away to dodge Marth bair. Go frame by frame from 2:32 to see
@skyninegamingКүн бұрын
I think this is the most important "tech" in the entire sequence. Wiggle out is super easy. Memorizing tether heights is easy. But intentionally recovering low, tethering, and cognizantly drifting away during the tether to dodge the bair? That's insane. Also his tech was great and even better was the bair after. But not as insane as the drift away.
@super2thesamКүн бұрын
I came here looking for this. He moves closer with the air dodge and then immediately dodges the bair with the drift back. It’s crazy. Beautiful. So tricksy.
@LANBobYonsonКүн бұрын
@@skyninegamingThe bair is necessary to get on stage quick otherwise you just jump out similar to Marths needing to bair but the whole sequence is perfect yeah. The decision to do that insanely difficult recovery knowing Zain was going to try to punish the recovery he had just seen is conditioning that would make hugs proud.
@yomedrathКүн бұрын
He uses his double jump to stop the walljump momentum, no need for the bair to get on stage.
@skyninegamingКүн бұрын
@@LANBobYonson@yomedrath is right. While Young Link and Link have the same issue as Marth regarding walljump techs (they jump out super far), Aklo saved his double jump to cancel the momentum following the walljump tech. The bair was important to catch Marth falling to ledge after his up-B, but in this particular sequence, Aklo doesn't capitalize further. In other games, I believe he has reverse edge guarded with tech double jump bair.

I fucking love tether recoveries, it's part of what I love about samus. The amount of mixup/route potential you get out of airdodge -> grapple alone both positionally and timing-wise is way more immense than people think. So many little ways to recover with grapple correctly. Also, this isn't a correction because it was true for aklo's case here, but I think ppl will find it neat maybe. For samus and YL, there is a third way to avoid the pesky grapple pop-up. If you set it up right (usually by dangling a lil bit before reeling in) you can do a walljump. Samus particularly likes this into immediate up b cause you end up getting a lot of invincibility out of it. Anyways thankyou for subscribing to samus facts ... editing to say I forgot to say this video fkin rocks

As an Ult player, hearing how the tumble system works in Melee is just so funny. Like why tf can't you airdodge out of tumble, but wiggling the stick the correct way somehow makes the player leave tumble? idk man, just hearing that was simultaneously so funny yet confusing to me.
@ArtiphTDКүн бұрын
Fantastic video! To be honest, I'm surprised you didn't also put focus on the burst of drift that Link himself gets out of starting his zair, because Aklo cleanly drifting backwards with it was essential in getting him away from the hit that was coming at him.

Why the fuck can you cancel tumble like that? I kind of love that I have no idea if this is an intentional but undocumented mechanic like phantom hits, a mechanic they were testing during development but accidentally left in the game like V cancelling, or a fully unintentional quirk of the game's systems like wavedashing.

Peach can't float directly out of tumble, either. They know the importance of wiggling out as tether users do.
@codetaku2 сағат бұрын
I assume the reason they made it so you can't air dodge out of tumble is so that you can't accidentally SD right after a big hit Which we sometimes still see top players do when they hit slideoffs they were trying to tech, but a lot more might happen to low-level players with delayed reaction times if they let you directly airdodge out of tumble.
@Chizypuff22 сағат бұрын
Still missing one thing, tether resets horizontal momentum You can see Aklo airdodge in and after pressing Z he hovers backwards out of the backair range! I haven't read anything that supports this, but I think you can actually accelerate faster in the first frames of a tether

i only have 202 sets and made gold whenever it is available but I believe Link is broken. Regardless of skill level or who Link goes off against, he only needs one good convertion to begin inflicting mental damage since Link plays way too differently compared to the rest of the cast.
