ENGLISH : I tried my best to have the Brown Sound with pedals, sometimes with specially dedicated ones like the Wampler Pinnacle Disrtortion or with various Marshall type pedals, I was quite close but not enough in my taste. Then I took some days to make the real deal with my Fractal Axe FX2 : the exact same amp, with all the physical stuff involved that Eddie did in 78 (Variac, boosted EQ, etc) from scratch. I also ordered a very close pickup of the original, the Heat Crusher from SP Custom. It replicates exactly all the nuances of the original PAF that was modified by Ed. Here is the result, what do you think about it? No mix, no mastering. :)

The problem, first, is that many of you guys trying to find the "brown sound" seems to not know the basics about picking: on an acoustic guitar, picking in different angles (but at the same place) gives different sounds (imagine if you pick at different places...). Transpose this basic knowledge to an electric guitar, and you'll find that EVH sound not just comes from amps and stomps, but, first, from his picking (Jammie's crying is a good exemple; muffle strings in a particular way; many on YT seems to not catch that). Then, you have to know that Ted Templeman and his technician rearranged tracks, got the equalizer added, bounced tracks to add effects on those tracks, mixed them, and got that particular sound. Oh, and I forgot to mentioned that he had played with stainless steel picks from time to time... Stainless steel picks gives a particular sound when used, so, this is another trick EVH used to get his particular sound. Trying to find the "brown sound" means nothing to me. Just learn to play the best as you can when it comes to play some VH older stuff, and you'll sound way much better, imho...!

Salut Nono 😊 Franchement chapeau bas !

I'm with you. I love this guy's playing, and I thought the tone sounded great in general, but I've never heard anyone get it 100%. I'm sure it would have helped had he dialed in the proper effects too. Regardless, we can all strive to sound like the king EVH, but unfortunately we will never have the most important component - his fingers :)
@giftofguilt2787 жыл бұрын
Trop de gain dans l'intro non ?
@MrJonken706 жыл бұрын
You will never get the true "Runnin' with devil" -sound on a basswood body guitar. You'll need a tighter, snappier bodywood sound; like; ash or alder. This is the fundamental basic of creating old school the Brown sound. The EVH guitar played on this clip; is only good for creating the modern EVH-sound. -NOT the "Brown sound". It's a pretty common thing confusing the "Brown sound Eddie" with the "modern Eddie". Just because it's stamped "EVH" doen't necessarly make it right man..... If You take advide: Try theese 3 things: - A hard northern (bat) ash body guitar (old school fender) -with a maple neck -and the Seymour Duncan '78 bridge humbucker (Floyd optinal). - A cable - A Bray amp. And You're done!
@DigiPal6 жыл бұрын
Btw, he recorded most of the rhythm parts with his Ibanez Destroyer copy of a Gibson Explorer. It's a short scale guitar, tuned half note down, strings are slack, and supposedly playing with stainless steel plectrums from time to time. Start with that, and it will get near the EVH sound.
@sniperforce347 жыл бұрын
Eddie VanHalen is a great musician, but his playing today is so abstract that I lost interest, he in my opinion lost his melodical abilities to make great feet work as he did back in the early 80's to early 90's, his tones are warm but they are not what I call a brown sound, but listening to you play them, they are extremely close and good work, keep Rawkin dude!!!
@Neogeofanatic7 жыл бұрын
thanks so much bro !!! Well everyone evolves, in a good or bad way, depending on the ear that listens :) I'm glad that he's still alive, legends tend to die so much those last months.....
@sniperforce347 жыл бұрын
NeoGeofanatic I agree, I've seen and heard many great musicians evolve to higher levels and some get into dry spells that they never return or sound the way they used too, I've been thrue lots of them myself as a working musician, can tell you how many times while being on stage or even practice that I have sounded off balance and even the greats are no exception to the rules, I still like Eddie, he took fretwork to the next level when I was a teen just starting out, I still like his music, but when there last recent album with diamond Dave came out, that wasn't a good sound he came out with.
@Neogeofanatic7 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean, I haven't listened to it still ^^
@sniperforce347 жыл бұрын
NeoGeofanatic yeh not his best, lol, but people really don't look at it from sides like you or I do, because what we do is an art and talent that are in different levels, he was recognized by his talents back in the yes of the L.A. music seen, now we KZbin here, lol, I'm seeing so many great musicians in here doing crazy great work, just like you, I watch a lot of your work on here and see that you definitely make your vocation a vaction when you play, you don't see that to much anymore because the era of the guitarist is in ways slowly disappearing and technology is taking over..
