I've watched this video about 20 times now and I will watch many more. I bought the plans, and it was worth every penny. I would have paid just for the instructional videos. Excellent instruction. I also started making calls to local sawmills (by local I mean the closest one is over 200 miles away) to buy all the wood and almost had a heart attack. So, I called the guys at L.L. Johnson Lumber/Johnsons Workbench in Charlotte MI. and they hooked me up. It was actually $250 more than I could have bought lumber, but I don't need to drive 209 miles one way, haul it back, cut and mill it. It is being delivered to my door and I only need to do minimum milling on the wood. (Thank you Justin) I probably won't post a picture of my finished bench as it will not live up to the original.

I work in a machine shop, I'm used to working with tolerances that measure in the thousandths of inches. I have precision machines at my disposal that cost as much as a small home. The level of precision you manage to get in something as easy to screw up as wood, using hand tools, commands my respect.

So appreciated your video...videos. I bought you plans for the bench and finally built it.... I should have done this 40 years ago. I went with the 9 foot version and went 30" wide andit suites me very well, couldn't be happier. I made some modifications for my own personal needs but your ideas and plans helped me alot. I went with a sliding deadman on both sides and for the bench hook I used an old idea. I am a piano tuner and cabinet maker so I have seen the way they used to attach grand piano legs which was a slip fit system that allows me to put on and take off the hook very quickly and is amazingly strong. I have save up wood and vices for many years for this project and after carefully studying your videos and plans I finally did it. It took me 2 weeks and had alot of fund with the draw tenons and really the whole thing. I had to glue the top upside down and then do the mortises and vices before I used an engine hoist to lit and turn that 9 foot monster onto its base. It fit like a dream. I made a sliding bench on top of it for detailed work as well as a router based board flattening jig so I could straighten boards up to 9 feet by 28" by 8" tall. Having a true top and even sides is like being in a different world. Now after having the bench for about 3 months I realize that I use it every day for almost everything and am thinking about building another one. I have 5 large work benches but absolutely love this one. Thanks for all your help!

Good to see one of these videos using hand tools. Also, great to see some older tools. My grandfather was a carriage builder and had a lot of these tools from the late 1800s. Two tools he didn't have were: mallet and straight edge/ruler. He only ever used his hands to drive the chisels and could eyeball measurements and straight lines. A true artisan. He is missed.

Wow, just amazing. I watched every 2nd like I was going to build this tomorrow. Then i stapled my finger to the plans I printed out. I think I'm going to start with house training my dog. Great video

Chris, love the bench! It's very similar to the one I'm building right now. I've tried to stay very traditional, using only hand tools, but I've had places where the band saw and the drill press were vital. Putting on a leg vise with a wooden screw and the CrissCross 14 from Benchcrafted to support the lower part of the chop. Unfortunately, work came to a screeching halt yesterday when I broke the end of my thumb. Using all construction grade wood, as I couldn't afford the hardwood for the top. Been fighting a twist the whole time. Legs and stretchers are almost done, then maybe I'll get it up on its feet and get the upper surface finished. Really enjoying the videos. They're helping me out a lot.

Dude, I'm aspiring carpenter. I even geeked out on the part where you were sharpening the planer blades. Lol. Thanks for posting such incredible content!

welcome the family. yeah, when you start searching out blade sharpening videos, it's time to seek professional help. there are weekly meetings for those with this affliction; we used to meet at Rocklers, but, now we zoom.... ;-) seriously, I know what you mean. as an aspiring wood worker, I get it....

Hello Chris, i am an Australian carpenter, builder. I just watched your making of a carpenters bench top video, very inspiring. Your a brilliant carpenter, tradesman. I wish I had the space and factory to make one of these with my now 2nd yr apprentice. People just don’t know how to or use hand tools these days. Great work Chris, fantastic.
