After watching this I was thinking that there was no way that this was historically accurate. But it turns out Gibson actually left some real events out because he thought the audience wouldn't believe it: "Other changes to the story occur near the end of the movie when Doss is placed on a stretcher. In real life, Doss had another wounded man take his place on the stretcher. After treating the soldier, a sniper shot fractured Doss' arm and he crawled over 300 yards[50] to safety after being left alone for five hours.[51] Gibson omitted this from the film because he felt that the audience would not find the scene believable."

@@checkmate058 Plot armor and plot hole are too often buzzwords that have little meaning. "A plot-hole isn't just something you don't understand in a film. Nor is a plot-hole just a failure of a film to literally show and explain every single detail to you, rather than give you the pieces and let you figure it out yourself because you are presumably capable of doing so. People too often use the term "plot-hole" for minor continuity errors or dangling plot threads that don't actually substantively change the outcome or the main plot. Sometimes they mistakenly use "plot-hole" in reference to characters having better options and simply not choosing those options. [...] None of those things are really "plot-holes," though, and if a reasonable and consistent explanation exists that fits into the film and resolves the supposed problem, then the existence of that explanation means it's not a plot-hole." - Mark Hughes, Forbes

I am a flat character idiot too. But I do not make films, instead I can’t give up my way to see right and wrong. My values are part of my soul and can’t change that. Crushed my brains against uncountable walls, will never get a recognition medal....but I treasure a few moments when doing the right thing made a difference in somebody else’s lives. Shitty life, if you ask me, no one trusts you, envy will try to corrode you just to feel superior when I am certainly more simple than bread. People are very destructive towards everything that is different, specially if being a solitary person. Too bad, not even if I would wish to do it, I could change. I am an ideal physician at the Covid period. Wait a few more months, real ugliness comes out of people and not the bullshit hero crap they sell us. Undoubtedly there are many well intended people among the corrupted ones. Intention is already something. But not enough. It takes guts to be bullied. Socially excluded and very poor by defending truth. More than a blessing, it is a curse.

I began shedding tears as soon as I read the title...all the way until the end of the video. I saw Desmond T Doss' returning to hell on earth when Diana went up to no man's land...and I saw Diana breaking free from bitterness and vengeance when Desmond held fast to his faith despite opposition even from his fellow brother in arms. Wonder Woman is a fictional character. Desmond T Doss is a man of biblical proportion. Both inspire us to find meaning in persevering in faith against all odds. "Captain America" is real... his rank was not captain, it was private... he did not carry the shield of vibranium, he carried the shield of faith he did not say "I can do this all day long," he said "Lord, help me get one more" Steve Rogers is fictional. Desmond T Doss was nominated by WWII vet and the most decorated of them all, Audie Murphy, to represent the greatest generation in WWII commemoration. Both inspire us of the power of conviction in this messed up world.

Hacksaw Ridge is one of my favorite films of all time, and by far my favorite war movie. It made me cry every time Doss said, "Please Lord, help me get one more." And to find out he was a real person whose efforts are parts of true history...that's a most beautiful thing in the midst of war. Your analysis of his character also inspires me, and I'm sure everyone who has seen the movie and your video. Thank you for making this.

Another unspeakably profound, insightful and heart wrenchingly moving video. This one hit home for me; I served five years in the British army and often find myself reflecting on things that happened in that time - compassion was something severely overlooked. If I could go back there's no doubt I would have served as a medic rather than an infantry solider. Life is so precious.

John Parr John, don‘t feel bad for feeling compassion for others. It makes a difference between a human being and a machine or beast. I am a physician and must fight against my colleagues who believe that feeling compassion makes you less efficient or undermines the authority you are supposed to have. No. It is their mistake. I do exactly what I must do, even if it could be hard, if needed to save a life. Obviously, given the last choice to the person who trusts me. In fact, being closer to others is strength, it allows to understand far more than one side of the complexity of the human nature. I pay dearly for my personality, but not going to change, even if I wish it, It is part of my fabric that remains intact after years of facing human ugliness at any possible way. I am strongly rejected, underestimated and even considered less intelligent. But I know who I am, only this keeps me alive. Life is unfair and cruel, we are tested at any moment, just for no reason. It must feel good to put another person down to feel superior. Shame on them. I grow and glow despite having no hope. Many times I wonder why, but it is useless to make such a question. It has no answer. Curiously I hesitate no second to operate a person in seconds if needed. There are no feelings at that moment, you do what it takes. The problem is that it shows self confidence and people will immediately hate you. Life is precious and has no value at all, simultaneously. Now, 4 July after Coronavirus, we see how cheap life is. Do not think all doctors are heroes, we are not at all. It is duty. Same that you have obeyed while serving as a Soldier. I admire your courage, because I fear bullets. But a virus or a million of them, that is part of my work, I give no second thoughts and take my precautions. That’s it. . It is not sacrifice or suicidal, but a well known part of the medical profession that must be accepted as bullets and wounds for anybody in your position. I deeply resent and hate to have been forced to stay locked down when I could have helped out so many and willingly for free. It sucked, being impotent while willing to give it all. No one cared and actually my colleagues took holidays and enjoyed their lives. Not me. I feel the pain and could do nothing because of a political wrong decision. We all have our regrets. I wish you a wonderful life.

Why allow or permit government idiocy to dictate your life? Go to where you are needed. If I had the chance I would be out of the western world as fast as a bullet leaves a gun. Good luck pal; I hope that you are truly able and willing to help out people that really do need some help.

I think at the moment of the “dark night of the soul” when nothing he does matters and he asks “What is it you want from me? I can’t hear you Lord...” it isn’t that he’s distracted/interrupted by calls for a medic, it’s that his prayer is ANSWERED by the calls for a medic. To me this is the peak moment of the film, where his faith in the truth is rewarded with a purpose and time in which to use that truth.

Yes, I think it takes more appreciation of a religious mindset to understand that there is a mystical dimension. In a world where Christians either are in films or media whining about their perceived persecution or supposed superiority ("God's Not Dead", etc.), or dismissed as irrelevant superstition or power manipulation, Hacksaw Ridge actually takes Christianity seriously as something more than a jingoistic slogan.

Rather, there is no place for violence in a loving, good, and compassionate world. Too long have the insane and evil been allowed to tower over the peoples of all nations, and by their own hands will they be torn down to the last. To re-understand the idiom: "the meek shall inherit the earth", it more deeply means the gentle of nature, the honorable and noble in spirit shall be the ones who remain, after the violent and warlike mongrels of the earth have run to the battlefields, spilled their own blood by their very nature, and died even to the last.

A man [is] meant to be doubtful about himself, but undoubting about the truth." from "Orthodoxy" by GK Chesterton, Chapter II: "The Suicide of Thought" This video really reminded of that. "[H]umility makes a man doubtful about his efforts, which might make him work harder." When Desmond had his doubts, he never wavered from the Truth. Desmond Doss was a real human you can listen too him tell his own story. He was a Seventh Day Adventist -Saint. This was not a made up story and it does a great injustice to humanity to fictionalize him and treat his life as a narrative. He was a saint dedicated to his Faith in God. Watch the contentious objector documentary if you care to know the person. He was more incredible than any movie could portray him to be. As a Buddhist I would undeniably call him a Bodhisatva. Your channel is a new proof for me that there are other dimensions a person can discover to see this life from another perspective and understanding. Your perspective towards life has different dimension from ordinary people. I am always get inspired by your videos. Respect bro, keep doing such incredible videos. In classical tales, the story of Joseph is a flat arc character. Taken through many adventures and tests through no fault of his own he endures all, is eventually recognized as a giver of truth and saves the very brothers that damned him to painful exile. In fiction "Ben Hur, a Tale of the Christ" is the very opposite of a flat arc protagonist, contrasted to a flat arc supporting character. Judah Ben Hur is a man whose convictions say that the occupational rule of a world government (Imperial Rome) is unjust, yet he lives a prosperous and happy life as an active business member of that world. Like Job, had his family and prosperity stripped, while being sentenced to a death ship galley. He changes throughout the story, gaining prominence enough to seek revenge on his antagonist, and eventually embraces a stoic truth that is exhibited by another character that appears several times in the story. That other character, The Christ, has remained steadfast to his convictions despite the similar and unjust trials. There are a few others. Ismael in "Moby Dick" seems to have a flat arc story. Marme in "Little Women". The Artful Dodger. Anne Elliott in "Persuasion" though she did change a bit by becoming a bit more experienced in taking better advice. Mrs Habersham has a flat arc (it is not always a heroic character).
