I don't think people give Peter Shilton enough credit. People continue to remember him for being out-jumped and outworked by Diego Maradona but the man has played more competitive matches than ANY other player having had a 30 year career, he has the most England caps and a two time European Cup/Champions League winner. One of our best ever goalkeepers!

Given his club form, it was very difficult to justify not restoring Ray as England No.1, at the latest, after he’d recovered from the injuries he suffered in early 1984. In truth, also based on club form, he should have been the first choice goalkeeper in Spain in 1982 after Spurs’ truly amazing season in 1981-82, which just would not have been possible if Ray had not joined from Liverpool. Spurs were league title contenders in 1984-85 and 1986-87 as well, when Ray’s importance to the team only increased. Defensively Spurs has never managed to be as credible as they were in the eighties after Ray retired in 1988.

Was one of the 28 that travelled to Mexico for the 1970 World Cup finals but did not make it to the final 22. Peter Shilton who won a record 125 England caps made his international debut at Wembley against East Germany in November 1970. But as Gordon Banks was the first choice a young Peter Shilton only kept goal for England occasionally. When Banks was involved in a nasty car accident in October 1972 and lost sight of one eye,Shilton seized his chance to be the England's first choice custodian.But still he had to with Liverpool's Ray Clememce breathing down his neck.And there was too Phil Parkes. But of all his international matches,the most disappointing was the 1-1 draw with Poland at Wembley in a crucial World Cup qualifier with Poland on 17 October 1973. Shilton had also featured in the earlier World Cup qualifier with Poland at Katowice on 6 June in which England lost 2-0.Shilton failed to stop Jan Banas and Wlodek Lubanski from scoring.But that was forgivable as it was Bobby Moore's defensive lapses that attributed to those two goals scored against England. But five months later Peter Shilton was partially to blame as he came out too early to prevent Jan Domarski from scoring but instead allowed the ball to slip under his body.That goal killed off England World Cup hopes of playing in the 1974 World Cup finals. And in the next World Cup qualifier the same thing happened as England were denied by Italy.By this time Shilton and Clemence were rivals vying to be the England's first choice.But England's 2-0 defeat to Italy meant that for the second successive time they failed to make it to the World Cup finals. In the 1982 finals England qualified but failed to progress beyond the second round again being denied by West Germany. Shilton at 41 featured in his last World Cup in which England finished a creditable.England's 2-1 defeat to Italy in the third place playoff was Shilton's last for his country.He had won 125 caps which is still a record.

You call Diego an evil dwarf as if the English have a monopoly on fair play. Terry Butcher & Terry Fenwick should have been shown the red card . On numerous occasions Maradona made them look average and they responded with their usual crass thuggery. England have a typical loser complex. If it isn’t “we wos robbed” than its “coming home” when in fact it went to Rome instead. Grow up. England would not have won the 1986 World Cup. Michel Platini’s France or West Germany’s Karl Heinz Rumminger would have seen to that.

I'm surprised a big club never signed Shilton. I know he had a very successful spell at Forest but they were never a big club in terms of stature. I would have thought clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool or Tottenham would have tried to sign him after his time at Forest. I'm sure Everton were happy with Neville Southall but if Shilton was as good as people say then he would have improved the other sides I mentioned.

I always felt that Shilton was overrated, but your point about "big clubs like Manchester United" doesn't really make sense. While Shilton was winning European Cups and League titles at Nottingham Forest, Manchester United only won FA Cups in the 1970s and 1980s. They didn't win any First Division titles from the late 1960s through to 1994.

Fabulously overrated, cost England in the world cup 86, Robson should have dropped him after that but didn't then costs England again in 1990 against Germany, and in euro 88 stood there like a complete lemon when Ireland scored. And as for the penalty shoot out in 1990, the balls had hit the net before the clown had even dived.
