Gets me every time. He want's his father to end his torment, the woman he loves finally kisses him and then he dies in his fathers arms. Have seen a few versions of Phantom Of the Opera, and this is the one that always tugs at my heart strings. Charles Dance played Eric so well, really made you feel for the character.

Erik has a sense of humour in the original Leroux novel too. He has funny, sarcastic jokes.

I dont understand how some people say "this erik" and "Webbers Erik" Because they both are based on the book. And the book describes Erik(that is one character ) as someone sweet, mysterious, caring, seductive, gentleman, delicate, murderer, with a dark sense of humor and so on. So i dont get it when some people say "this erik or webbers erik" . THEY DIDNT CREATE THE CHARACTER OF ERIK. Gastron Leroux did and i have read only Susan Kays book(which dives into Eriks past (from before he is born until he dies) . So yeah. This character has some specifics that every person who makes a version of him MUST show them
@bawoman4 жыл бұрын
@@NOONE-cd4gu They're adaptions sweety. They aren't the same exact characters. The OG Phantom will always be Leroux's, but the Eriks from the different adaptions that came after are and should be considered stand alone characters, if influenced by OG Leroux Phantom, some to a higher. others to a lesser degree.And this Phantom is different from the ALW version, which is different from the 1943 movie version, which is different from the 1925 version ,etc

I thought the musical is the one that can make me cry. I was wrong. Liters of tears have come out of my eyes because of this film. The Phantom's character(a.k.a Eric) really is different from other versions. He is a gentleman. He is loving, caring, and very warm. It really sucked that a person with that kind of character doesn't get a happy ending. I loved his voice. It really sounded like a real man's voice. Full of warmth and care and respect for Christine. I hated Phillip's character. Obviously he is a playboy. He didn't convinced me that he loved Christine. He was a coward and just not a nice person for me. Christine was good. She has a nice voice for an operatic sense. And she really loved Eric. I just didn't like him that he wants to be with Phillip instead of the Phantom. LADY, ERIK DESERVES YOUR LOVE MORE THAN THAT BASTARD COUNT. Overall I really liked this whole production. It made me felt different kinds of emotions but sadness dominated them all. I don't regret staying up till 4 am just to fimish watching this.

I think that, essentially, the Claude Rains interpretation is similar to Charles Dance'; he is a gentle character who secretly loves Christine and, unbeknown to her, pays most of his salary as a violinist in the Opera orchestra for her singing lessons. This was the first version of Phantom that I can remember seeing and, in spite of Nelson Eddy using the film as a vehicle for his voice, I think remains a sensitive version. Like most versions, however (apart from the Lon Chaney version), has little to do with the novel.

This film made me cry, it was so beautifully heartbreaking that it just seems so tragic yet perfect all at once. I especially love how they never show his face. It makes it that much more mysterious, and so much less hokey then it could've been. Bravo to Messrs. Yeston and Kopit; they deserve much praise indeed for creating such a work of art.

Loved this movie more than the rest, this version is incredible, but there is one flaw that stands out. This particular Erik grew up loved by parents which made him a bit more caring. Caring enough to most likely not be able to kill out of cold blood. Accidental or to protect himself maybe but not indifferent without affliction. I think Erik's character is more developed and well rounded than the others. ERIC REALLY NEEDS A HAPPY ENDING.

"Erik! Please! If you love me, please." Christine's enticing voice pleaded, loud to his ears. Then the phantom raised the boy up, knowing in that moment, despite wanting to kill him, Christine's happiness mattered more to him than his own. For he was hers. She sang for him tonight. She should have been hers. The boy breathed heavily in relief, thanking the man who spared his life and ran away just as the police had reached him and pointed their weapons at them. He looked at his father, the only person who took care of him after all the years he spent underground in his gloomy lair. Carriere took his own pistol from his breast pocket, anxiously pointed it up at the masked phantom. He would rather choose death by the bullet than to die by humiliation of people seeing his accursed ugliness. Erik nodded, urging him to end it once and for all with only Christine being the last thing in his mind. The bullet hit his chest, knocking the air out of him. He fell forward and landed on the opera roof, nearly breaking his bones. His old father carried him in his arms, stopping the policemen from approachig nearer. "Get back!" The hurried cries of an angel alerted him. Christine ran to his fragile body, wearing the Marguerite white costume that made her look even more ethereal. Tears staining her heavenly face. He whimpered as she took off his porcelain mask, showing his monstrous face. He stared deep into her orbs and saw love. Love, that he had longed wish for. She kissed his forehead and smiled as she put it back on gently. She kissed him and she did not die! Emotions filled him and he was satisfied with that. There could have been more. "Oh but there's more", like she said in their picnic. "If you love me, let me love you too." And she did, at last, she loved him and his heart has finally experienced pure bliss. He took his last breath to say her name, "Christine." I KNOW IM LATE, IM YOUNG BUT IM A PHAN, POOR UNHAPPY ERIK, HERE'S FOR ALL THE PHANS WHO'LL COME TO WATCH THIS

This is by far my most absolute favorite adaption! Andrew's version totally strips away that Erik is just some maniac. In this version the Erik is so amazing and so intense, and Charles played him so well. The other characters in this film are so-so, but when paired with Charles it takes this movie to a whole new level. I cry every time! Anyone who hasn't seen this film hasn't lived!
@NOONE-cd4gu5 жыл бұрын
No Webber didnt make Erik a maniac. Have you even read the book or know what the story is about? Erik didnt grow up with a dad and his mom literally hated him and never even hugged or kissed him. He had to live in the streets from the age of 9 and eferybody wanted to kill him so he had to defend himself by killing aswell. In the book he is described as someone who can be hard, cruel, maniac, murderer but also sweet, tender and caring. Someone hypnotyzing and seductive , but also powerful and ragefull. Someone who in this moment can kill someone cold bloodly and the next moment be soft anx tender. He was a murderer, doctor, inventor, ventriloquist, magician, singer, composer, architect. He cared for children and animals and was against abuse and always wanted to defend the more poor. He grew up without knowing the feeling of love. The feeling of passion and desire. Without knowing what touching a human being feels like. He was haunted down by society like he was a wild animal from the moment he was born. Nobody ever loved. Not even his mom. Despite of his incredible talents he was never loved until the moment he met Christine and she showed him what real love and affection feels like. What to love and to be loved is like. He promised her he would change and never kill again or never hurt anyone again as long as she stayed with him. Thus he is a maniac and a killer. So yeah. In conclusion Andrew Lloyd Webbers Phantom is a more accurate version of how Erik was supposed to be like. Get ya facts straight before complaining about smth. Ya prick

No way, ALW version is the saddest. In the book Erik gets a sense of closure and at least dies in peace.Similarly, In this version, at least he dies in the arms of the woman he loves knowing she loves him. In the musical Christine just hands him a ring, and he hears Raoul and Christine sing to each other as they leave while he breaks down in sobs. I mean granted, he doesnt die in the musical, but still you dont get the feeling that The Phantom will ever recover from the heartbreak

Many people are pissed off about the fact we never actually see the Phantom's face in this version, but I think this is something pretty inteligent. They have created so much hype about that, that not even the best, most horryfing make-up in the world would be enough. I still remember my dissapointment when, in the 2004 version, the -scarcely- desfigurated Phantom's visage is revealed. In adition, in this, they have chosen to show the person behind the Phantom, not the monster.
@tearoses99405 жыл бұрын

He was already dying from his coughing lung thingy. His dad shooting him was a mercy killing that he asked for, otherwise, the police would've shot him and examined him and it would've been bad. This way, the police just wanted him dead, so they walked off and let Erik, his dad, and Christine have a private moment before Erik died. He redeems himself by his selfless action in releasing Christine into Roaul's care, and knowing his chance of love is gone forever, and he will never recover, and die from his love. I love it when he shrugs before he is shot. But then I'm pissed that he was shot :(

Weber's Phantom of the opera and this one are my two favorites now 💖

WHY are people harping on Christine? Anyone can see that she more than proved her love for Erik by that stupendous duet, and by her removing his mask with a smile and a loving kiss while gazing directly into his eyes. I'm a stickler for happily-ever-after, but this time, out of ALL the versions I've seen (Lloyd Webber's included!), this ending rings true. I would even call it the most satisfying - Erik died happy. The best version of the story, WAY, WAY better than the 2004 movie, hands down!!

Because she manipulates and eggs on both Philippe and Erik with that "If you love me..." line. This Erik never killed anyone outright for no reason (unlike ALW's version) and thus was far, far from irredeemable. He deserved better than this tbh.

Before I looked this versions I saw three another (From 1989,1998 and oft course 2004 from Webber) but this is a Version that I loved most and I like the music in the background and all voices are great ( but not carlottas i don't like her) but this movie is very great sometimes I wish that I met a Phantom and he teach me ;)

Wow this brings back crazy memories, especially the part where they are walking the staircase at the end and they begin to descend down the staircase.......Wow, that was the part I was looking for. My childhood seems so close, yet so far away.......

...as the only one (although the musical with M.Crawford is also magnificent!but it's a fairy tale). Great respect for marvellous Charles Dance, no one will be better as Erik. Watching this story wakes up the most warm, delicate feelings in the deep of the soul, and helps these feelings to survive in this world, being ready to give them to somebody worth them. I was happy to meet this somebody. Erik wasn't. Much people aren't, although they have also beautifull souls...
