Several units I served in while doing a 20 year career are now Phantom Regiments. I heard this one night listening to the radio in The Netherlands. while attending high school I liked it then and I still like it now;.

Thanks for posting this. This piece of music was the inspiration for the name of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps of Rockford, Illinois USA. I am an alumnus of that group. and yes we did play it.

Im marching with them this summer and i couldnt be more honored and excited especially since ill be a part of their Euphonium section. And ive only been playing euphonium for a yeaf and a half, Im primarily a flute player. To march with Phantom has been my dream for 3 years, and through hundreds of hours of hard work I managed to do it. You guys are the people that have inspired members like me to pick up brass instruments and make it their goal in life to march with the Phantom Regiment. Thank you.

Many of the movie programs I watched as a kid in NYC featured Leroy Anderson music as their title themes & intermezzos going into commercials & returning to the program. Some of the ones I remember are this, Promenade & Sarabande, & Song of the Bells. (Nigel has posted all of these to KZbin--thanx, Nigel.) And of course, The Syncopated Clock was the iconic theme for The Late Show & The Late, Late Show. Anderson is one of those composers whose music you hear everywhere, but may not know the titles. The other composer whose music you've often heard is Raymond Scott, who composed the orchestral scores to Warner Brothers' classic Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies cartoons.

its intuitive U mentioned Raymond Scott...a good friend of mine (Eddie Aversano) played trumpet for his big band way back in the 1940s and 50s

Several years ago a theater in downtown Monterey, California, near where I live, had a special showing of classic sci-fi Forbidden Planet. This was preceded by a live organ concert. The organist played many familiar old melodies, all of which I could identify - except one! Now it was a melody that I knew, and had heard a long time ago. I also had the impression that I heard it many times, which led me to suspect that it was used as a radio or T.V. show lead-in. Well I pert near went crazy trying to find it - it took me years! Then by accident, while looking for ANOTHER "mystery melody" I came across this video!!! And what's more, the comment below explains just where I heard it years ago, since I also am from the N.Y. area. I can't thank both of you enough! Just yesterday I posted a comment on "China Doll also! Have loved Anderson's music all my life!

It looks like several of us have had similar experiences with this piece. It is very evocative and moving in that it seems to foreshadow a tragic conflict on the horizon.

Tomorrow, 25th, is ANZAC day in New Zealand, equal to Veteran's Day in the USA. This is a very apt work to listen to, and think of those that have gone. To quote, Here, dead we lie, who did not choose to live and shame the land from which we'd sprung. Life to be sure, is nothing much to lose, but young men think it is, and we were young.

An important day for both New Zealand and Australia, who lost so many brave men far far away from home.....

@@NigelFowlerSutton Nigel, i listened to this piece again, as i just heard Sleigh Ride on the radio, played at a live performance. Leroy was a master at light music. And regarding the troops of Australia and new Zealand, we cannot forget the magnificent effort put in by the U S Marine Corps., training here for the assault in the Pacific. So many gave their lives to keep our countries safe. They too were so far away from home. I personally will never forget them, as so many children who were my age at the time lost their fathers in that war. They died, so that we might live in freedom. God bless the USA.

The WW II photo of Americans marching under the Arc d'Triomphe was of the 28th Infantry Division, at this point still largely led by leaders from the Pennsylvania National Guard. They fought across, France, arrived at the edge of Paris, were told to form up for the victory parade (slightly premature, there were still some Nazi snipers shooting it out with the Resistance in other parts of the city) marched through the city, and returned to combat on the other side.

Our politicians made our beloved old regiment I 17 with banners from lots of old wars into a Phantom regiment 1994. The city of Uddevalla got silent the wars ended. The eternal sounds from explosions and infantry salvos around the clock were not to hear any more and all the soldiers were gone. The nature could repair all the wounds. I 17 could put up 45 000 men, the majority from Gothenburg. The regimental brass orchestra was well known.
