The Pharcyde were decades ahead of their time. Even for this album to drop in 1992, it was so progressive before other albums such as Enter the Wu or Midnight Marauders even dropped a year later. This is hip hop royally.

Name one track on the album, songs and skits both, that they DIDNT have fun making 😂 These dudes were total clowns, and it shows right through in their music. Very few other rappers can joke and laugh through a whole verse, yet still give the audience something with so much substance front to back. It’s not easy to put into words really. All I know is, I’d give quite a bit to travel back in time to the recording of this album and kick it in the studio with these guys during the recordings
@duanecuster58244 жыл бұрын
I still remember this was the first cassette I ever got and listened to front to the back and learned every word. I wanted to be from Cali so bad. So creative and dark but fun and silly. Didn't even need a visual. Allowed me to create my own visual of each character.

Damn bro you said it!! I just watched the video for the first time after hearing the song a hundred times and not knowing an official video was ever made. No matter what, it doesn’t touch the picture I painted in my head of each character. But that’s why the Cyde were brilliantly ahead of their time, tracks like this, “ya mama”, “please mr. officer,” and others just provide such explicit visuals with nothing but audio. Unlike rappers today (and even quite a few from their era) it’s more than just the rhymes. The mixing on this track was too brilliant, and the bouncing back and forth of the voices on the last verse, overlapping each other with his low voice and her highs, such attention to detail. Long live the cyde

The thing I want to point out is, at the time, NOBODY was making music like this, from a structural stand point. It was layered like a Bomb Squad track, but with live instrumentation mixed with the samples. The instrumental could almost stand alone and tell the same story. A great example of lyrics being perfectly mapped to a beat. I wish i knew music theory, i could explain it better....
