The Roots are definitely one of the greatest Hip Hop groups. Sonically they were probably the most versatile group due to combination of live instruments, turntables & Beatboxing. Up until “You Got Me” they were Hip Hop’s best kept secret.
@uamini2 жыл бұрын
Good choices there... The Pharcyde were great until they basically self-destructed. They're probably the best-known group coming out of L.A.'s underground hip hop spots like The Good Life Cafe and later on Project Blowed that had more to offer than the stereotypical G-Funk songs the city was usually known for. There are some interesting artists from that era if you ever go that route. Jill Scott got to shine on a live version of You Got Me that was released a short while later on a live The Roots album. It didn't take long for her own succesful solo career to take off. As for The Roots, there's a lot more to them than just this love ballad. They're definitely the best hip hop live band in the history of the genre and Black Thought has been consistently excellent ovet the years. They have a long list of great albums over the years...definitely worth checking out more of their work.

Oh snap, 9:12 , that line is sampled for Joe feat Mystical - Stutter remix. They use it for the hook. I never knew where it came from. I learned something new! I like the Roots song better out of the two. The melody of the hook. Also, Scott Storch became a monster producer. He left Roots to be work with Dr Dre. Pharcyde are like the relatives of Souls of Mischief and the Hieroglyphics Crew in the way that they are all from California and came out at the same time. Passing me By and 93 Til Infinity are like sibling songs to me. They both came out at the time and they put you right back in 93...both are very timeless songs. They produced a very different type of sound from what was coming out Cali at the time. It was like a completely different perspective than say a Snoop Dogg or Eazy E. They were more pure Hip Hop rather than Gangsta Rap. Pharcyde : Runnin' Pharcyde : She said (J Dilla remix) The yelling was definitely despair and not anger haha.

Great Valentines Day two-for one! Both songs are favorites of mine. Jill Scott actually is on the live version of the song from the Roots Come Alive album, which also got some airplay. Everybody thought they were from New York when they came out.... nope, they are from California. -Yes, Booty Brown and Imani have high pitched voices.. lol. -The chorus is comical... Pharcyde is a comical group. For me this is the time when the deep underground scene was basing their musical sound off of "A Tribe Called Quest's" sound.... I loved/love it. Another funny fact.... there is a group in Oakland called Heiroglyphics, that kind of had the same kind of sound. They have a member named DelThaFunkHomosapien who is Ice Cube's cousin. He has a similar sound to these guys and the funny thing is Ice Cube produced some of his stuff, which is the total opposite of Ice Cube's persona
