Under Device, and below Setting and Information there is Zones. Under that, you can select USA FRS or USA GMRS to get the FRS frequencies without having to look them up. It also has China FRS, China Taiwan FRS, EU FRS, AUS FRS, RUS FRS, Norway FRS, and South Africa FRS to get you into even more hot water 😁 There's a model that is exactly the same without the integrated radio, the Atom L. I've had mine for about a month or so, and quite happy with it. Thanks for the review.

This is a really cool device. It's worth noting that FRS, GMRS, and HAM all have different sets of rules, and because of certification requirements this is *technically* not legal on FRS or GMRS. That said, if you choose to set up the channels properly and stay within the transmission power limits, etc... well, it's your radio. In my opinion, it's really a shame that the rules are set up the way they are. Because I really would like to have one device that can do all 3 and be fully "compliant" - from a utility standpoint it's an incredible idea, but the FCC just doesn't want us to have nice things. 😂 My Yaesu *is* set up with the MARS mod so I can transmit on FRS/GMRS if needed, but my intent is for it to be for emergency use only.
@VTXHobbies

Regardless of the radio I have I always do the mars mod and have all the gmrs, frs, marine band, freenet, business band, etc programmed in. I use everything but business band and marine band regularly, I don't give half a shit about the regulations. You'd never ever ever see any kind of trouble from it.

100% the only legal transmission allowed on this device is on amateur radio bands, unless it’s part 90, which means you could use it on licensed business frequencies. But there’s no way it’s Part 95 GMRS because among many other things, it’s capable of transmitting in the amateur radio bands, same with MURS. Regardless of what one ends up doing with this, it should really be marketed to amateurs only if it’s not at least part 90.

Many FCC rules make no sense and most won't apply(and most unlicensed users won't even know them) during an emergency. If a true SHTF scenario happens the airwaves will be jammed w/people screaming for/demanding help and all proper courtesies of band/channel/repeater sharing will be out the window.

You know what would make a great video for along the lines of amateur radio would be programming, and setup of a police scanner. Sometimes during a severe weather event monitoring your local emergency services frequency can provide a wealth of knowledge. These often work during power or internet outages.

The problem is that too many law enforcement systems are now DMR or other encrypted. They should be required to only use those for tactical situations. Perfect justification for public is to hear traffic/accident info.

I had one of the early variants for 3G. Probably made in the same factory - yellow case, same form factor, even had a red laser pointer but was practically impossible to get reliably tuned for UHF. Would have been handy for my work in remote Australia. The firmware was terrible, but I have an aversion to Android. But it was built like the proverbial and pretty sure the guy I sold it to got it up and running. It looked like they were serious about durability. Having sufficient storage was always an issue with some complicated workaround which I just didn’t have the patience for. Just looked it up - Runbo S5. Looks very similar and I expect if a client buys enough, these companies will put any name you chose on them, but could be wrong. This one looks quite evolved from my 2015 model.

There's not a practical way to enforce it if you're properly configured, but FRS is Licensed by Rule which means only radios build to the standard and FCC certified for FRS use are allowed to be used under the FRS service. GMRS operates in the same frequencies and requires a (simple, cheap) license and has broader limitations but would generally still not allow for this type of radio to operate unless it's Part 95 certified and can be locked to prevent accidental operation outside of the assigned frequencies. Similar requirements apply to commercially licensed frequencies. Generally speaking, the only completely safe and legal way to operate this radio is with a HAM operator's license.

I don't really like walkie-talkie phones . Those are not true two way radio . Most walkie-talkie phones have to be connected to a Radio cellular network or WiFi internet. In order to function as a walkie-talkie. Most of us know when a cell phone network fails it will stop working no cell signal no communication. And I won't be surprised if they charge you to use their walkie-talkie service. Only a real to walkie-talkie can communicate without a cell phone service signal. And you can connect to repeaters and get 30 miles range on the repeater and of course you need a license first. And in a emergency repeaters most likely will not be down. They're not owned by the government their own by people who build them. And maintain them and let the public used them with a license.

@CyborgAlienBariaur
@CyborgAlienBariaur 7 ай бұрын
A few issues, 1. this phone is more for emergency services personal that CAN use all the frequencies, and 2. It would be best for someone to pay the $35 fee and get their GMRS license, though unnecessary for the low power, it IS necessary to be on repeaters that you alluded to in the 15-22 channel GMRS range. 3. Though FRS is ok, since they can't use repeaters, something you did not mention, this is a low powered device. If they're an Emergency Services personnel this maybe a decent radio but, there's better out there, they don't necessarily have a built in cell phone but, will have more power.

@@RKingis Yeah... IMO there's still a lot of confusion among US hams about "type certification. They need to understand that there IS NO type cert for Part 97 and their favorite Icoms, Yaesus and such are only certified to Part 15 as not-too-noisy digital devices. It is always, ALWAYS up to the ham to be in compliance when we transmit. And Part 15 really only *requires* self-certification, which is how a lot of Chinese ham transceivers wind up here without any testing on file with the FCC.

@@Randrew With all respect, I don't think that's true. We can buy and use any radio. However, to advertise and sell radios as ham radios, they must be part 97 certified. This is a good thing for Hams. Since most of the cost is in the engineering, this allows companies to sell the same radio designs under part 90 (commercial) and pot 97 (amateur) without cheaper amateur radios ruining there more lucrative commercial market.

Very rugged phone. Almost as durable as a Zebra smartphone. But the battery life is a big flop. A phone like that which is designed to for industrial/outdoors use, needs to have a very reliable battery. My $120 Motorola G7 from a few years ago can go over 3 days with no charge, out of the box. As long as update is disabled, brightness is low and its only used for calling. Its been that reliable for several years. They should get rid of any feature that is not commonly used (the infrared transmitter, the extra buttons, etc) and double down on better attena and better battery. It better battery is not possible, at least make a hotswappable battery module. So you can just carry an extra battery on your person. But even those types of batteries can be unreliable because they dont hold charge long enough while unhooked. Not saying it has to be the perfect phone. But if you are trying to combine 4G with two way radio transmission, youre still way better off with separare devices. Especially in industrial settings. Its more reliable and has better options. It seems an all in one just isnt there yet.

$10k and some jail time, which depends on the mood of the judge and how the FCC wants to make an example of you. You can also be fined for xmiting at a higher power setting than authorized for that band. Just ask anyone with a Baufang radio and who's been busted. One thing not mentioned is, are these even FCC-authorized. There are requirements these "radios" must pass by the FCC and if they bleed, or cause harmonics, you can bet they are not blessed by the FCC so again, just don't sit in one place too long and not in your backyard or the FCC will take up residence outside your home. Personally, I feel the FCC should not require a license for the GMRS freq's since the little handhelds are very popular with campers and such. But leave that as it may. I'm not a HAM op. But I do stay at Holiday Inn Express and I have 20+ years of military radioman LF/MF/HF/UHF/VHF/UHF and SHF experience who feels dropping the Morse code requirement for a HAM license was a MISTAKE. The brand of battery doesn't change the chemistry of a battery. A battery is a chemical reaction in a box, when you chill any chemical reaction it slows down, where as if you warm a chemical reaction that heat is a catalyst that makes it work faster. If you want your battery to work harder, keep it in your pocket or in a warm pouch, but not too warm since this will also have negative impact on the battery performance, and you have to remember that the harder you make your phone work, the warmer it will become on its own.

09:03 Something off-topic, perhaps. As a German teaching English, I'm curious to know whether "as the crow flies" is actually used in American English, since you use "as a bird flies"? I'm looking forward to a response, as I'm really keen on teaching my students "present-day-usage" as compared to "text-book-English".

Yes that is still used too - I think it may be a regional thing. I tend to go with bird but my I've heard both in use day-to-day.

"As the crow flies" it is. Maybe most other birds are too small and gray to be noticed. Except Canada geese... but most of us Americans try real hard to ignore those ;)

I don't think it's legal to use a amateur radio as a FRS radio as in most countries the radios for free service needs to be certified.

FRS radios must be type accepted and NOT have a detachable antenna. GMRS radios must also be type accepted. The radio is illegal for anyone except Amateur Radio Operators.

Hello. I kinda like the phone you showed, but, do they make one thats much more? I know about not transmitting on the wrong frequencies, so... its ok with me because its my responsibility to know, and I know it, probably their thoughts as well. But, I only look for the full featured device, no garbage here. But I want way more, I will not settle for less, or I won't ever go there. My raido kicks ass, and I never pay for repeaters, but I have talked around the world in my little jeep, on a mobile unit. I only want this level of ability or the closest thing to it. You know? Like the briefcase 💼 😎 raido that the president uses that can be tuned to a paperclip, or anything, and opporate on any frequency, LITTERALY. YEA, LIKE SOME IDOT, I LET 4 OF THESE GET AWAY FROM ME AT 400 BUCKS EACH. ANYWAY ,COOL VIDEO. THANkS. PEACE BE ON YOUR HOUSE.

Just curious, is there an FCC ID on the phone/walkie talkie? As another comment noted, before you can legally transmit on FRS frequencies the radio needs to be tested and certified and issued a FCC ID demonstrating the compliance. The FCC ID must be placed somewhere on the device or in a viewable page on the device display. You can find the iPhone FCC ID on such a page for example.
@Randrew
@Randrew Жыл бұрын
It cannot be Type 95 certified as either FRS or GMRS... current rules as of 2017 no longer allow combination radios capable of both services, though existing certified designs were grandfathered to some degree. And as Lon pointed out, having a removable antenna also disqualifies it for FRS certification. If I had to place a bet, I'd bet that any FCC ID on the unit will show certification (even self-certification) for Part 15 as a Class B digital device.

I could see someone trying to hook this up to a stronger transceiver. The bottom ports aren't covered with little rubber stoppers or plugs. Not the sort of thing I'd want to drop in water with exposed ports like that. Can it also be used to transmit data without the use of the cellular, wi-fi, bluetooth radios?

I'm here in the UK back in 1995 I had a couple of Icon tranceivers, back then the Police, my local Police ran on 452.550mhz, the Icon radios were very advanced for there time and cost me a small fortune. If I put the radios on the Police frequency then transmitted they would jump up 100 mhz, I even tried giong down 100 mhz to see what would happen and to my surprize it would jump 200 mhz. These days though, unlike our American counterparts, the Police are Digital, no listening to them any more to my knowledge, surprised America hasn't done the same.
