THIS VIDEO: I’m going to talk about the value of photographically thinking and working in series. The single image has value for recording or documenting - especially the news photograph. You can pack a lot of information into one image so it can be impactful… but if that’s all you do, then you are unlikely to ever develop a recognisable visual voice. This, opportunity opens up when you’re thinking broadly about a subject and developing aspects like mood, aesthetic, narrative and sequencing.

ABOUT ME: The conversations focus on topics related to different aspects of photography including: art, documentary and photojournalism. The discussions explore the personal experiences of photographers and artists and how their work reflects both their internal and external landscape. During the past 30 years I have photographed in over 50 countries for magazines including National Geographic, Time, New York Times and Newsweek. I have held solo exhibitions in New York, London and Paris and my work is showcased in private and institutional art collections around the world.

Nice one, Graeme. Sound and illuminating treatment. And your own photos are truly exemplary. Wish there was a spot for the humour of Elliott Erwitt in the video but, as usual, great job.

Good timing for this one. I have a couple projects going - I assign a project to different cameras but the one I'm most devoted to is with a Leica rangefinder (M4.2) and color film I develop at home. I'm giving it a year; to the end of next February. I'm focusing on odd things I see on my daily walks from my home to the beach: things people use to decorate their yards, for example, or strange window displays in shop windows; people and displays through glass, etc. As I scan the negatives, I'm seeing the photos I like the most are those through glass - in or out, with reflections. It seems like two series are emerging from this focus; straight photos of things I see and the glass photos. I also think in book form. I've had to sequence other projects in the past. That's the most difficult job of all it. Taking pictures is the fun part.

Hi yes, it is always tricky at the begining to know what one is doing...or how many different things is doing.

Only recently found your channel, and I’m really glad I did. Particularly useful for me at the moment as I am about to embark on a new project, and the ideas in this video will help, thank you. I also like your photographs - a feeling to me of Eggleston’s colour and Robert Adam’s rigour.

Thanks Graeme, I need to start a project as I feel I am standing still right now and cannot decide what to focus on (pardon the pun), so hearing you discuss your process is helpful and I will start by setting the limits of the project(s) and try to stay within them.

Excellent, useful episode. Your Scratching the surface essay resonates deeply with me, and it's such an important exploration of 'the structure of things now' in SA, if I can put it that way.

This was difficult for me to stay on during the videos running time. I had to stop a few times and replay that part. The reason is that I like to work in series for produce a narrative.
