Wow! I know that my channel has only just started...But on US Thanksgiving day, it's made it to 1000 views!!! I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who has watched this and the other videos so far!!! 1000 views may be nothing to the big channels out there but it truly means the world to me!! THANK YOU!!! ❤

With the supply chain issues for other Pi's, it's not surprising that the Foundation wanted to get the Pi 5 hardware out of the door as soon as possible. As long as there are no hardware barriers to accelerated encoding, getting Pi 5's into peoples hands and fixing the encoding issues in software later makes sense.
@jeffs_piinthesky

Yup, it certainly makes a lot of sense. My biggest fear is there's some hardware fault in the PCIe slot leading to them not putting the specs out...But you're right, more likely they're just trying to re-establish ground they've lost to other SBC manufacturers

First Shadertoy demo I have seen on a Pi. Better than I expected but plating battleships with ocean waves might need some optimization. RP1 doc is about 1200 pages, not sure how much we will see of it and by when.

Indeed, baseline performance of the Pi5 is great! I mean, I hope no one expects to be playing Starfield on it but for an SBC, it's pretty amazing!!!

I'm kinda interested in RISC-V more... I'd like to switch to a RISC-V for my NAS, perhaps something like the Milk V Pioneer, but it feels too expensive. Ampere ARM what be amazing, but I think it's too powerful for my use cases... Anyhow: interesting video. Keep up the work (and don't ckickbait too much, you might end up getting people bashing the title more than discussing the cintent of your video).

Indeed. I will be delving into some RISC-V SBC's in 2024. And yeah, apologies for the clickbaity title but it is actually genuine!!! My issues with the Pi5 at launch are that it's potential is being held back...And of course some of that is now resolved (see my update short).

My partner's first Raspberry Pi project was a jukebox to replace her failed iPod using one of the first HiFi Berry's @@jeffs_piinthesky. We still have a few sitting around, and with a decent DAC, like her Beresford, it produced flawless music from 256k VBR MP3's. She's now up to a dozen Pi's of various flavours, with a variety of different types of screens for debugging her latest project, an stupidly configurable Alarm Clock appliance.

It all depends what you want @@ShadowFandub. If you only need a 10W Peak power speaker and you're happy with the sound quality of a Class D amp, that $1 sound card is fine. If you want your Pi to connect to an audiophile DAC/amp/speaker set up, the HiFi Berry will provide a perfect digital output. The two are a world apart.

While RPi5 seems impressive compared to 4, the problem is price, which is almost twice for the base model. Not that good actually in terms of price/performance.
@jeffs_piinthesky
@jeffs_piinthesky 11 ай бұрын
Indeed. If you look back in time at the first Pi, as a true, Linux SBC that could be picked up to £20, it was incredible. Equally, the price of the Pi zero range is utterly compelling. With increased competition from other manufacturers, I understand Raspberry have had to pack more and more in, and that drives up cost. But at which point to they divorce themselves from their original point of existence? If they hadn't released the Pi Zero 2W then I would be losing more faith. But that showed they were still committed to the computing education market
@markbooth3066
@markbooth3066 11 ай бұрын
The issue with price is that only the high end Pi 5's are being sold right now. As production ramps up they will announce lower end Pi's at lower prices. Personally, I think that the latest Pi's should always be at the headline price, and older Pi's should have their prices bumped up (in a planned way, known well in advance along with the EOL's). For most hobbyists, the default purchase should almost always be the newest Pi, so that should be the cheapest option. Commercial users, who have based products on a specific Pi and don't want to change, should pay a premium to keep those production lines open. That way Commercial users help to subsidise the Foundations original target audience of educational users. Instead of "Pi 5's are priced £5 more than the equivalent Pi 4" I think it should be "Pi 4's are now priced $5 more than the equivalent Pi 5, Pi 3's are now priced £10 more than the equivalent Pi 5, and so on". That would encourage commercial users to upgrade their products, stop taking away production capacity from the rest of us and fund the extra production capacity needed to fulfil their needs while they are upgrading.

Price is OK for a mini computer that starts to be capable. If you need a simple brain for you projects there are plenty of cheaper alternatives around plus all those great a cheap 32 bits microcontrollers that get more and more capable every years for less than 10 bucks.

@@jeffs_piinthesky The RPi4 at launch took a few weeks before we had video encoding on raspi OS and 3d acceleration took like 4-5 months video encoding on ANY OTHER distro took almost a year. I think there might be licensing issues from hardware manufacturers and they need the go ahead before they just release specs, white papers, source code etc.

It was an interesting decision to replace the audio jack with the extra MIPI connector. Like you say, there's pads there for a jack. Maybe it's just coz so may people use Bluetooth mic & headsets now? I can't really see how it could be cost cutting given the whole MIPI thing. So I can only think it was a decision on "what would be most useful to most"...Though I'm with you. I use the audio jack on and off but, aside from experimentation, haven't used MIPI...yet... :-)

Having the GPIO go true a bridge chip makes it incompatible with a lot of projects that require really fast GPIO. Projects like Emu68, that emulates a very fast 68k CPU can not use the PI5. Sometimes I think that they don't know who there audience is.
@jeffs_piinthesky
@jeffs_piinthesky 10 ай бұрын
Thank you SO much for this. I will confess I had NO idea of that limitation. FYI, there were other big limitations that annoyed me on PI4 such as both USB3 ports being on the same lines so if you booted from a USB stick, then plugged something into the other port, you'd lose your filesystem!!!! So I'm still happy they've put in a dedicated IO controller. HOWEVER, the point you make about GPIO is truly excellent information and tremendously valuable to the community!

I think your camera is too low 🤔 btw, bought a bunch of Pi3 now because they get cheaper. The Pi4 and Pi5 takte too much power for my taste. 6:30 You did two mistakes on your performance test. First is don't use random, use urandom. Random gives cryptographically secure random values and is dependent from entropy and can block when entropy is used up. urandom is a pseudo random number generator that is also a lot faster. And second is, you need to do a "sync" afterwards and add it to the time.
@jeffs_piinthesky
@jeffs_piinthesky 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I'm always up for any suggestions to make the videos better! As for random vs urandom, you're right of course but all I was trying to avoid was ending up with the same data being written that could skew the results due to write caching. Using /dev/random is fine for that purpose.
@punpck
@punpck 10 ай бұрын
@@jeffs_piinthesky urandom is still random - how should it be cached. And random can block if it runs out of entropy and it takes more CPU to calculate it - this alone can make a big difference on the Pi4 vs Pi5. I would suggest to redo it with urandom - and ofc don't forget the "sync" afterwards. Disk I/O ALWAYS is cached. You see this on SDCards when it says it finished after 10s and the sync takes a minute or so.
