Fear: The Home Of Horror

The master of suspense ramps up the tension in this masterful scene from Rope as Rupert's (James Stewart) suspicions grow over the disappearance of his friend David.
From Alfred Hitchcock’s ROPE (1948): Two young men, Brandon Shaw and Phillip Morgan, commit a murder and host a dinner party to toast for a perfect murder. However, reporter Rupert Cadell finds them suspicious and starts probing them.

I love Rupert casually resetting the metronome periodically so that it's always out of rhythm with Philip's music, just to make him even more uncomfortable

This scene is just so masterfully realized by Hitchcock. The addition of the metronome not only sets the pace for Philip’s music, but, by default, the rest of this scene. Tension is building up in both the music and in the conversation and it all adds up to the audience’s suspense. Hitchcock really did understand how to get people on the edge of their seats and it’s illustrated so well by little details like this one. Almost everything about this film is perfect. The only detail that really detracts from the immersion of the film is when they take cuts. It was almost always an obvious cut, and not a good one either. It felt truly surreal that the camera would just randomly zoom in on someone’s back.

I feel they got caught due to the collision of Brandon's arrogance and Philip's guilt, nervousness and sensitivity. He did warn Brandon it was a bad idea to serve dinner over the trunk, not to hid the rope and inviting Ruper over. Rope is my favorite Hitchcock film. Yes, as noted below from another viewer= it's his most underated film!

I love Brandon and Philip's Dynamic, because if they had both acted arrogant like Brandon or reserved like Philip they probably would've gotten away with it. But with Brandon aggravating Philip at every turn and Philip drawing more suspicion by panicking, they mutually sabotaged each other.

Philip really gave it away. If it wasn't for his suspicious and peculiar behaviour, Rupert probably wouldn't have suspected anything. Brandon handled it like a champ.

LRN_News, Yes Rupert would. Because Philip and Brandon had forgotten to hide David's hat.....!!!!

Well actually if Brandon hadn't invited Rupert back at the end then they probably would have gotten away with it. Philip did make Rupert suspicious, but if it hadn't been for Brandon's ego and conceit and his certainty that Rupert would be on their side then they almost certainly would've avoided getting caught. In other words, both of them screwed up pretty badly just in different ways, the most notable of which was probably their decision to commit murder in the first place.

@@quantumannihilator3431 No, Nathan. When he was about to leave, Rupert noticed he had taken the wrong hat, and it was David's hat. That's why he came back.

It's so amazing how it almost makes the viewer feel complicit in the crime, since only the audience and the killers know what has happened. Like you actually get scared when Phillip and Brandon are in danger of getting caught.

Such an amazing movie. I can't believe this used to be considered one of Hitchcock's worst films. It seems it's been gaining popularity in the last 10 years or so though, at least from what I've seen online.

4:40 I think this is the single biggest blunder in the movie. Rupert's attention had been focused on the books, he probably wasn't even thinking about the rope itself. It could've been a good way to misdirect Rupert and send him on a dead-end lead, but instead Philip blurted out a vital clue with "A clumsy way of tying them up."

@@fer3620 You are welcome thanks for the response . but although I've seen this clip of the film, I never played classical music, and I don't remember leaving the name of the movement (That happens sometimes when I'm asleep, things just pop into my memory and I answer, or type short stories, or whatever and awake to find some very interesting things, I wish it would have happened when I was in school)
