I love The Piano Teacher movie, it clawed into my psychy. So I bought the book (very cheaply on Amazon) and the book crawled into my soul scratching at my mind in only a way the written word can. And it was this book that got me into foreign and more difficult novels.

I'm an Austrian, I like her, I like Handke's work as well, don't get me wrong... BUT WHY, WHY OH WHY... haven't you reviewed Stefan Zweigs "The World of Yesterday"? It's very different than this but for me one of the greatest books ever written. Read it... seriously, the amount of history and poetry and tragedy, and fate that is woven into its fabric is almost too big for one person to digest. If anybody wants to understand a big part of the modern European soul... read this book, read it ... like seriously read it and review it, I would love your reflections on this masterpiece.

It's really cool to hear about you reading Gravity's Rainbow. I'm envious of anyone who gets to experience that book for the first time. When I first finished it last year, I hated it, so much so that I gave my copy away. As the months passed, I found myself unable to get that book out of my mind. Definitely one of the best books I've ever read, it's horrifying, hilarious, and nothing but a masterpiece. Enjoy!

Love that book! Also check out "Lust" by Jelinek. Her writing is by the way also very funny (in a totally dark manner of course), at least in the original German. I hope the humor also translates well.

Im interested to read an english translation of one of Jelinek's works. When I read her in German I get the impression that a large body of what she's written is almost untranslatable because so much would be lost in terms of double meanings etc. And because language and the unusual things she does with it is so central in her writing and a lot of the brilliance lies in that... I just feel like it would be a nightmare to translate. Would almost be too much pressure for me. I might read this one in English just out of curiosity.

I love this film and the book too! The book was slightly difficult to read mostly because of so many musical references that I didn't understand, but apart from that it's a chilling and fascinating story! I'd recommend everyone to read the book first and then to watch the movie. "Unfortunately" I watched the film first and it did kill the enjoyment of fully enjoying the book.
