Thank you, Trent of 8 years ago, for this video. I ordered a piccolo trumpet and hope to get it next week. I searched for a video of yours in order to find out the interval by which the fourth valve lowers the pitch, and you came through. A minor quibble is that this instrument did not exist in the Baroque era and the high trumpet parts were played on much longer natural instruments (without valves). "Tromba" and "clarino" were, in fact, the same instrument, but played in different registers with respect to its harmonic series. They came in different sizes, but I'm pretty sure never in such a small size. For various reasons, the clarino went out of fashion. The clarinet was developed as a replacement, hence the name. Piccolo trumpets are often called "Bach trumpets" but this is a misnomer, since they have absolutely nothing to do with Bach. I wouldn't say it's exactly an abomination to use them in a performance of Baroque music, especially if other modern instruments are being used, but I think original instruments would be preferable. Unfortunately, that's not always so easy.

I bought a piccolo trumpet, and indded with the standard mouthpieces it does not play easier the higher octave Bb4-Bb5 compared to the standard trumpet . BUT then I realized that the fault is in the mouthpieces and I bought small mouthpieces of 11mm-14,4.mm diameter from resin or acorn that are normally used for wooden cornetti musical instruments , AND THE MIRACLE HAPPENED ! Playing the Bb4-Bb5 octave became almost as easy as playing the Bb3-Bb4 octave in the standard trumpet.

During my music summer school in the early-to-mid 1970s, at one point one of the band directors, a trumpeter, called out to whomever might be listening: "some people say the piccolo trumpet is hard to play. That's not true at all: IT'S DAMNED NEAR IMPOSSIBLE,"
@Maty743A8 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity how does your cornet/trumpet upper range translate to this? So lets say I am reasonably fine playing top C on cornet, roughly what do you think I could expect to hit when using piccolo?
@TrentHamilton8 жыл бұрын
The piccolo trumpet doesn't necessarily make high notes easier, it just makes them more tuneful (at least, that's the theory). A top C on a trumpet is an equivalent difficulty to a C (one octave lower) on a piccolo trumpet.
@Maty743A8 жыл бұрын
Cheers for the reply. Its quite interesting how it works out like that.
@TooSlowTube8 жыл бұрын
Personally, I find it easier to play high notes on the smaller instruments - like a piccolo trumpet or a soprano cornet, but then my upper range is pretty terrible. I think for someone with a good upper range, it's true that they won't necessarily get any higher, but for someone who struggles to play above the stave on a normal sized trumpet or cornet (guilty), the smaller instruments can make it easier. I find those notes are easier to get, and easier to keep playing later into the practice session. It could just be the result of using a shallower mouthpiece, of course. I can get a bit higher on a Bb or C trumpet or Bb cornet by using something ridiculously shallow, like a 7D, but then the lower range suffers, and it just doesn't feel right. You also need less air to play high notes on the smaller instruments though, so that helps with duration.
@carpetsomething5 жыл бұрын
Based on the fact that I can get roughly as high on cornet (not my instrument, I was just playing my friends a few weeks ago) as I can on my baritone I would expect you could probably hit top c on piccolo trumpet?

I am actually getting a piccolo trumpet soon. Any tips on playing that you could give me?
@BariRMe7 жыл бұрын
My 2¢. A piccolo trumpet is difficult to play well. Most people overblow them. Do they make playing high easier? Yes, in a way. The same notes on a regular trumpet are closer together and hard to hit and hold whereas the piccolo is using a different part of the harmonic series - down a octave where the notes are farther apart - so starting on a high note is less risky. But ultimately, the note you blow into the mouthpiece is still the note that comes out the other end (if you have the right fingers down.) If you can't buzz a double G into the mouthpiece, the horn won't help you a lot. It's not a substitute for playing high in a jazz band horn section either, since the tone is different and won't blend as well as playing high on a regular horn. Trent mentioned that they come in A. Indeed, many come with different lead pipes so you can change from Bb to A at will. This is important because many Baroque trumpet tunes are in D. This puts them in the key of E for a Bb trumpet, not the easiest of keys. But lower the horn another half step to A, and now you're in the wonderful key of F, the easiest of keys to play - even easier than C. Also because of where the piccolo is in its harmonic series, all the awkward trills that don't work on a standard horn because the fingerings become alternate fingerings for other notes (G at the top of the staff can be fingered 1-2 or 3 alone so trilling often produces the same note rather than the desired A upper note) come out easy as pie. And you should trill 3rd space C with the 4th valve. It's much easier than trilling 1-3.

I'm thinking of getting a Piccolo trumpet.... been playing for years and I tap out two or three whole steps above where the fingering chart ends at high F. I've reached the conclusion, yes I can play that high but the notes might never be useful. On my B-flat trumpet the high E, the third note in series to be played open, is arguably the last useful note. (That high F at the end of the carnival of Venice is perfectly doable) But the high G above that, again played open, is just way to airy to be useful. Maybe it's just me. idk thoughts? I also have a C trumpet, something I picked up because I got tired of running into flutes and pianos in the key of C... that thing taps out at the high E. (It's a generic Chinese Trumpet knock off) It can play high F but hitting the high F/G (One octave above the last bar-line) on it are like hitting a strike in bowling, in that your lips and air are just right.
